Round 7: Inverted Umbrella Competition

2 are out and 9 are still in. No lateness disqualification this time! Yay! The new deadline to get your round 2 songs in is 5pm EST on December 10th!

Yes Sir, I Will

1.Link a song via YouTube, Spotify, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, DailyMotion, Vimeo... or whatever you like as long as I don't have to download something.

2. This round is [Noise Rock]. Distorted, feedbacky, punk-influenced rock. Give me messy!

3. Aim to impress me with what you pick, since I'm rating these.

4. If I know the song already, I'll tell you to pick something new, otherwise, you're good.

5. I'm going to start each new round every Sunday night (EST,) so if you're late, you're out. My 1-2 least favorite recs will be eliminated each round (1 if we don't get a lot of people and 2 if we do.)

***Winner of the competition can recommend me whatever 2 albums they want and I'll listen to them no matter the album as long as it's possible to find and as long as neither exceeds 3 hours.***

SlothcoreSam: “Gorecki”

Pretty voice! I like the tablas so far. Great pickup. This sounds very cinematic, like the climax of a film. The strings are lush and beautiful. Good all around, really.

Splinter

Kompys2000: “Half Life"

Nasalish voice, kinda lik 3D. The strings stick out a lot here. The production here is really appealing too. It feels distinct and sexy. Their harmonies are cool too.

4.3/5 (ROUND WINNER! [+0.5 will be added to their next round score])
4Two People
First Body

fogza: “Phone Call”

Vocals sound very “modern” but I like them. Chillest one yet - dreamy even. Maybe not a engaging as it could be, but it’s good.

3.6/5 (SAFE)
5Cibo Matto
Viva! La Woman

JohnnyoftheWell: “Beef Jerky”

A bit obnoxious for what what I was expecting. The verses are trip hoppy though. This is a little too in you face for trip hop? I guess that doesn’t mesh for what I was in the mood for. Maybe too cutesy?

3.2/5 (SAFE)

Wish I Was in Heaven Sitting Down

ffs: “Got Messed Up”

Heavy blues rock influence, but the trip hop beats are still there. The record scratches are nice. Kinda Beck musically?

BlazingBlitzer: “Snowcone”

Surprising from deadmau5, but yeah that’s a trip hop feeling for sure. When this song going to start? It’s 2 minutes in and I still feel like we’ve been listening to the first 30 seconds on loop. Oh…I guess never.

2/5 (ELIMINATED!)
8Neat Beats
Cosmic Surgery

someone: “Graffiti on a Tuesday Night”

Talking samples are often cool. The piano is nice. It’s a chill beat, but has some dynamic changes. The cello is pretty.Maybe a little underwhelming.

3.1/5 (SAFE)
9Laika
Silver Apples Of The Moon

GhandhiLion: “Sugar Daddy”

Feels very in a hurry. The vocals feel very backseat, but they’re nice and sensual. The outro section is cool though, very liquidy if that makes sense. Needs a little something something.

3.3/5 (SAFE)
10Saltillo
Ganglion

Porcupinetheater: “Giving In”

I like the drums and the production is spacious in a way that works pretty well with the mellow atmosphere. It’s a bit bland for me, but it’s not bad. Amost like 2000s radio-pop.

3.3 +(0.5 from winning last round) = 3.8/5 (SAFE)
11Ulver
Perdition City

CugnoBrasso: “Lost in Moments”

Epic intro with cool drums. The vocals sound a bit mumbed so far. First one with prominent jazzy saxophone, which is cool. It’s very brooding and ominous. I like the changes in sections and I just noticed the bass is cool too. See, it’s not very melodic which shouldn’t work for me in trip hop, but Ulver are so good at switching things up that it definitely work. Like look the into is back for the outro and it’s epic!

4.2/5 (SAFE)
12Faex Optim
Look Around You

BitterJalapenoJr: “Irn Bru”

Cool percussion. That synth line reminds me of Black Moth Super Rainbow. Haha Scottish sample reminiscing about soda and uh…idk something else Scottish. He has a thick accent. Cute anyway. Not that engaging though.

3/5 (ELIMINATED!)
