Umbrella Contest 2021 Round 11: The Umbrella 2000
2 more out and we have a final 5!
1.Link a song via YouTube, Spotify, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, DailyMotion, Vimeo... or whatever you like as long as I don't have to download something.
2. The theme this round is Experimental. Pretty much the opposite of the last round. Make me go WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS? The less it sounds like it could be on the radio, the better. It can be pure atonalism, or just avant-pop, but keep it weird. I still need to enjoy it though!
3. Aim to impress me with what you pick, since I'm rating these.
4. If I know the song already, I'll tell you to pick something new, otherwise, you're good.
5. I'm going to start each new round every Sunday night (EST,) so if you're late, you're out. My 1-2 least favorite recs will be eliminated each round (1 if we don't get a lot of people and 2 if we do.)
***The winner of the competition can recommend me whatever 2 albums they want and I'll listen to them no matter the album as long as it's not impossible to find and as long as neither exceeds 3 hours.***
“Your Lucky Day in Hell”
I like the bell sounds and the drums a lot off the bat. Ooh, is that a mellotron type sound? This has some 60s vibes to it, but it’s very chill. “Winston Churchhill in drag.” I feel like I’m extra overdue for being into Eels. Between this awesome song and “Novocaine for the Soul.” Easy on the ears, but certainly not boring!
4.7/5 (Passed to next round)
“All I Need”
Trip hoppy vibes. No individual music element is really standing out other than the sultry vocals, but they do work together to make a pleasant song. That low-frequency oscillating synth line is neat.
3.9/5 (Passed to next round)
“In the Waiting Line”
More straightforward vocals, but still ones that make me think of trip hop. This honestly has early-2000s adult contemporary radio pop vibes. I appreciate her intensity and that key solo is pretty. This is quality stuff.
4.1/5 (Passed to next round)
Folky guitar and piano that kinda grabs you. Her vocals have that “modern indie folk” quality. That pickup with the percussion is not for me at all. I feel like this is just hipster Lumineers now. The first half was better.
Bossa nova guitar and warm lush vocals. So this is literally from the genre of easy listening? Ooh those backup vocals and brass! And a string pickup! Now there’s sax. Really building up without offending the ear. Seriously, brass is underrated and here it’s beautiful. Man, why is easy listening stereotyped as lame? This shit is awesome.
5/5 (ROUND WINNER! handicap (for others) of +0.5 for the next round)
Currency of Man
“It Gonna Come”
Swirling sax and a great drum beat. Soulful voice, nice strings, and an overall commanding attitude. “What does it mean?” I don’t know. This is cool, but I’m not in love with it. And don’t worry, I know that that outro doesn’t count haha.
3.7/5 (+.5 for winning last round) = 4.2/5 (Passed to next round)
Very echoey vocals. Intense and jazzy pickup. I won’t take off points, but this is definitely the harshest of the songs chosen this week. This is good and all, but it’s a little sparser and less ear catching. I’m just not feeling it, sorry!
Tough round! Seeing as though no one scored below a 3 this time, you gotta come with your guns out from here on out
ah shit yeah saw this coming when you announced there were no sub 3 ratings. oh well, respectable way to go out
Pulled out my Eels card again. Don't check the album, that way I can use it again next year, lol.
This round is going to be tricky.
I was going to choose a Coil song, but just saw you are currently digging them.
Back to the drawing board.
I mean if it's a Coil song I don't know it should be fine.
Coil Albums I've heard:
-Gold is the Metal (With the Broadest Shoulders)
-Love's Secret Domain
-Stolen and Contaminated Songs
-Musick to Play in the Dark Vol. 1
-The Ape of Naples
I don't know a single Coil song not from those
Have you heard
Teenage Jesus & The Jerks- The Closet ?
Check the full EP of 3 tracks, and rate it.
Not today, but maybe in the future
If you win you could make me listen to the Everything comp for one of your 2 choices ;)
Henry Cow- War ?
Don’t know it! :)
Cool, lock it in!!
Glad you liked Melody. OK now for experimental............ hmmmmm............
hehe, nice you enjoyed Bacharach.

Something Big might be the best song rec'd this entire comp
Arrigo Barnabé - Acapulco Drive-in
MC Paul Barman - Excuse You
@Cryptkeeper: Can't count this since the comp is already at round 11, but I'll listen to your song anyway
OK, I think I've found what I was looking for.
Stereolab - Space Moth
Hope you haven't heard this yet, not for you (it is AWESOME!!) but for me.
"but I'll listen to your song anyway"
@Cryptkeeper: Wasn't my thing, but not terrible for nerdy hip hop I guess?
@Trif: I do not know it, it works
put me back in
Colton has said that so many times it's become his catch phrase.
commenting here to remind myself to rec!!!
placeholder: being it by arthur russell
Cool, so now all we need is botulist!
BTW next round is the final round and it works kinda differently
If you want a preview of how it'll work, look at the 2020 and 2018 comp final rounds.
