I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass...

RANKED!
15Yo La Tengo
I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass

"Daphnia"

Clocking in at almost 9 minutes, this tracks a bit on the bland side. This is what ultimately keeps this from being a 5 for me, but I could totally see myself 5ing album this soon so idk.

14Yo La Tengo
I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass

"Point and Shoot"

I like the lyrics and the urgency, but on an album with so many lovable songs, this probably stands out the least.

13Yo La Tengo
I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass

"Watch Out for Me Ronnie"

50s rock pastiche made extra fun with saxophone.

12Yo La Tengo
I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass

"I Should Have Known Better"

A fun little story song. More frantic, but light, indie rock.

11Yo La Tengo
I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass

"The Race Is on Again"

This one's a very typical Yo La Tengo song. If someone wanted to know their "general sound" this would be a great example. With that said, their general sound rules.

10Yo La Tengo
I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass

"Pass the Hatchet, I Think I'm Goodkind"

It's weird ranking this one so low since it's an absolute banger, but this album has a better long rock epic.

9Yo La Tengo
I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass

"I Feel Like Going Home"

At the peak of this song when the piano slows does and those violins swell. This is the one to set me over the edge to 5 this. I just need to love it a little more. Just one bit and...

8Yo La Tengo
I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass

"The Weakest Part"

Jaunty and cutesy. Georgia Hubley is probably my least favorite of the 3 vocalists, but when she gets it right her vocal is absolutely ethereal. This is just great pop writing.

7Yo La Tengo
I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass

"Song for Mahila"

This song is so warm and genuine sounding. No idea what it means, but I feel it. I should Google the lyrics.

6Yo La Tengo
I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass

"Mr. Tough"

This is goofy as hell, but also has a nice message. More cowbell! Weird that this was the lead single honestly.

5Yo La Tengo
I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass

"Beanbag Chair"

This is just a baroque pop love letter. One first listen, I think this was my favorite. That simple pop piano honestly works so well even though a billion songs have done it the exact same way.

5/5
4Yo La Tengo
I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass

"The Room Got Heavy"

My god, Yo La Yengo doing electronic and it's scary and intense? It sounds straight out of a 60s computer music experiment.

5/5
3Yo La Tengo
I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass

"The Story of Yo La Tango"

When I got to this closer, I knew this album was something special. The guitar riff, Ira Kaplan's delivery. This is an indie rock epic for the ages. Why don't more people geek out over this song? And yes it's TANGO, not TENGO I guess.

5/5
2Yo La Tengo
I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass

"Black Flowers"

Beautiful beautiful brass. Jams McNew only has lead vocals 1 song on the entire album and he made it count. That trombone and tuba I think? When the drums come in it's just breathtaking.

"Sometimes I Don't Get You"

Sometimes I don't get me either. This is an apex comfort song and probably one of my favorite songs of all time now. The atmosphere, that piano solo. Kaplan's shrill whines may not be for everyone, but I just love 'em.
