| I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass...
RANKED! | 15 | | Yo La Tengo I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass
"Daphnia"
Clocking in at almost 9 minutes, this tracks a bit on the bland side. This is what ultimately keeps this from being a 5 for me, but I could totally see myself 5ing album this soon so idk.
3.5/5 | 14 | | Yo La Tengo I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass
"Point and Shoot"
I like the lyrics and the urgency, but on an album with so many lovable songs, this probably stands out the least.
4/5 | 13 | | Yo La Tengo I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass
"Watch Out for Me Ronnie"
50s rock pastiche made extra fun with saxophone.
4/5 | 12 | | Yo La Tengo I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass
"I Should Have Known Better"
A fun little story song. More frantic, but light, indie rock.
4/5 | 11 | | Yo La Tengo I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass
"The Race Is on Again"
This one's a very typical Yo La Tengo song. If someone wanted to know their "general sound" this would be a great example. With that said, their general sound rules.
4/5 | 10 | | Yo La Tengo I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass
"Pass the Hatchet, I Think I'm Goodkind"
It's weird ranking this one so low since it's an absolute banger, but this album has a better long rock epic.
4.5/5 | 9 | | Yo La Tengo I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass
"I Feel Like Going Home"
At the peak of this song when the piano slows does and those violins swell. This is the one to set me over the edge to 5 this. I just need to love it a little more. Just one bit and...
4.5/5 | 8 | | Yo La Tengo I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass
"The Weakest Part"
Jaunty and cutesy. Georgia Hubley is probably my least favorite of the 3 vocalists, but when she gets it right her vocal is absolutely ethereal. This is just great pop writing.
5/5 | 7 | | Yo La Tengo I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass
"Song for Mahila"
This song is so warm and genuine sounding. No idea what it means, but I feel it. I should Google the lyrics.
5/5 | 6 | | Yo La Tengo I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass
"Mr. Tough"
This is goofy as hell, but also has a nice message. More cowbell! Weird that this was the lead single honestly.
5/5 | 5 | | Yo La Tengo I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass
"Beanbag Chair"
This is just a baroque pop love letter. One first listen, I think this was my favorite. That simple pop piano honestly works so well even though a billion songs have done it the exact same way.
5/5 | 4 | | Yo La Tengo I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass
"The Room Got Heavy"
My god, Yo La Yengo doing electronic and it's scary and intense? It sounds straight out of a 60s computer music experiment.
5/5 | 3 | | Yo La Tengo I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass
"The Story of Yo La Tango"
When I got to this closer, I knew this album was something special. The guitar riff, Ira Kaplan's delivery. This is an indie rock epic for the ages. Why don't more people geek out over this song? And yes it's TANGO, not TENGO I guess.
5/5 | 2 | | Yo La Tengo I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass
"Black Flowers"
Beautiful beautiful brass. Jams McNew only has lead vocals 1 song on the entire album and he made it count. That trombone and tuba I think? When the drums come in it's just breathtaking.
5/5 | 1 | | Yo La Tengo I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass
"Sometimes I Don't Get You"
Sometimes I don't get me either. This is an apex comfort song and probably one of my favorite songs of all time now. The atmosphere, that piano solo. Kaplan's shrill whines may not be for everyone, but I just love 'em.

12.04.21 | "I Feel Like Going Home" is gonna make me 5 the entire album
I like I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One, but this one destroys it imo idk... it's just so Ars | theBoneyKing
12.04.21 | Damn, I love 90s and early 00s YLT but havenāt heard this one; based on this I should really get on it. | DoofDoof
12.04.21 | Not my favourite YLT by a long way tbh | NorthernSkylark
12.04.21 | Thatās a lot of 5ās | Sunnyvale
12.04.21 | Need to come back to this one, I absolutely love YLT but never really got into this album. Sweet list! | JohnnyoftheWell
12.04.21 | Was reading this frowning that a load of cuts were too low, but then I remembered that this alb has a lot of great songs
15 and 10 are definitely low, and while 1 is great, I'm not sure it gets the top spot. Beanbag Chair and Mr. Tough are fuckin joy and life mmm | JohnnyoftheWell
12.04.21 | And yeah, would take this over I Can Hear The Heart...'s patchy slog any day | DoofDoof
12.04.21 | Blasphemy | ArsMoriendi
12.04.21 | Agreed with Johnny though I Can Feel does have great highlights | DoofDoof
12.04.21 | I have really neglected YLT the last four years, used to be a big band for me - will make them my āband of the weekā selection for next week on my RYM list, shall revisit the whole discog and see how I feel everything shapes up now | JohnnyoftheWell
12.04.21 | Yeah, cut I Can Hear down to an 8 track, mainly at the expense of the second half, and you've got something on part with this and And Nothing. Good playlist album | DoofDoof
12.04.21 | Dang, thatās 13 main releases to revisit
Painful, Heart, Nothing, Electro are roughly on a par for me, this one a bit below. I quite like the early albums though, even though theyāre a lot more standard Velvets inspired indie.
This one was a lot better than Summer Sun so a return to form album I donāt dispute | DoofDoof
12.04.21 | Johnny Iād probably reduce all their albums to a 45-50 min maximum run time and/or 8-10 songs
For Painful that means getting rid of one songā¦maybe why it could be their best album to begin with :/ | theBoneyKing
12.05.21 | Agree their albums are mostly too long and that is indeed why Painful is the best. | ArsMoriendi
12.05.21 | This one's long, but like all of the songs are good except maybe Daphnia so it's okay | Sharenge
12.05.21 | still have a long way to go as far as exploring the Yo La Tengo discog... maybe I check... I started checking them out 'cus I liked the music they did for that one Will Oldham movie | ArsMoriendi
12.05.21 | I've only heard 3 of their albums, all the ones with super long titles lol |
