1. Link a song via YouTube, Spotify, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, DailyMotion, Vimeo... or whatever you like as long as I don't have to download something.

2. The genre this round is Industrial/noise! EBM, electro-industrial, industrial metal, industrial hip hop, neofolk, harsh noise, and power electronics all work. No noise pop and if you're gonna pick noise rock, make sure it's more noise (or industrial) than rock.

3. Aim to impress me with what you pick, since I'm rating these.

4. If I know the song already, I'll tell you to pick something new, otherwise you're good.

5. I'm going to start each new round every Tuesday night, so if you're late, you're out.

“My Foolish Heart”

The piano is pretty and I like those light brushy sound to the percussion. This would make good dinner party music. I like how it’s picking up in tempo, but still relatively chill. Nice bass coming in. This is so sophisticated sounding. You know, it almost reminds me of the opening scene music from a Charlie Brown Special. Charlie’s walking to school and the snow is falling or something. Maybe he runs into Linus. It’s nostalgic in a way.

3.6/5 (ELIMINATED!)

Escalator Over the Hill

GhandhiLion
“Hotel Overture”

From chill sax to something a bit more dancy. The horns sound like a wheel slowly running out of air crossed with a strutting elephant. Oh, now it’s changed, it sounds like some sort of argument between the saxophone and the rest of the instruments, like an old movie where some big mouth is getting beat up by a local gang of hooligans. They left him, bloody on the side of an alley, who will help him? He cries out in pain! Tragedy! The saxophone SCREAMS! I’m pretty sure this guy died. That’s so sad. The bass solo is his family lamenting his passing, at a funeral. His mother is sobbing uncontrollably. God damn, this song went from confident and angry to depressing as hell.

“Eye of the Devil”

Smooth organ and with a latin flair to the percussion. It’s like waiting room music, but sexy. Maybe it’s Hell and your punishment is to wait in a dentist office waiting room with a toothache forever while a sexy Satan tries to seduce you. Ooh are those vibes? I like that.

Pangea
“The Daily Planet”

Very choppy sounding with cool percussion. Jazz really knows how to do drums, I swear they’ve been the highlight of a lot of these so far. Oh, this is the Talk Talk guy, that explains why this is so atmospheric. Wait, lyrics? Oh nice. These lyrics are kinda proggy sounding like something Robert Wyatt would sing. This is slowly coming together in a build up, I can appreciate that. Violins, harmonica, guitar, this song keeps adding instruments. Keeping it fresh. Inventive, but subtle.

4/5 (Passed to next round)

I Was Young and I Needed The Money

"Soulbath"

Hip hop drums so far and record scratching. Not too jazzy so far. Wait, the organ is jazzy as hell. Ooh, was that a xylophone twinkling? That’s fuckig sick. Is the whole album damn good?

5/5 (+.5 for winning last round) = 5.5/5 (ROUND WINNER, handicap (for others) of +.05 for the next round)

New Conception of Jazz

“Somewhere in Between”

Bassy as hell and discordant keys, so far so good. I like the vocals too, they’re arguably kinda plain, but they help bring normalcy to an otherwise strange atmosphere of textures. Good balance of everything. Jarring trumpet and saxophone? Sure why not. I definitely like this.

4.3/5 (Passed to next round)

Machine Gun

NeroCorleone
“Responsible”

The bass is playing some odd time signature and the drums are chaotic. Free jazz? The most abrasive saxophone ever is screaming. Now it just sounds like musique concrete with random scraping sounds. This is starting to sound a little endless. I like it conceptually, but I’m not sure if I wanna hear for 8 minutes. Wait, as soon as I said that it changed to something jammy that was more pleasant. Good timing haha. This was good, but I don’t exactly love it.

3.5/5 (ELIMINATED!)

“Straight Up and Down”

God damn, is this Frank Zappa? You know Zappa has a song called
The Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue” on his album Weasels Ripped My Flesh and this song makes it clear why. Clearly Zappa loved Dolphy’s music. Playful vibraphone, screaming sax, but overall a weird atmospheric vibe brought by the simple bass and drums. Should I get into Eric Dolphy if I like Zappa’s jazz stuff? They’re so similar my god. Whoa those drums are like a ringing bell, and so are the vibes. I feel like I could run to this. It’s energetic, but not also sounds like planned chaos, if that makes sense.

4/5 (Passed to next round)

“Baja Bossa”

The guitar sounds so romantic. Bossa nova with an intensity to it, interesting! Nice key solos, good bass, and overall pleasant atmosphere that wasn’t boring. Not my favorite, but I like it!
