Help Me Out....for Once

In my 3+ years here, I don't believe I've really ever asked for recs, but I've found a genre where I'm finally at a loss: indie. I've tried, time and again, to get into bands/artists like Animal Collective, Sufjan Stevens, The Decembrists, Iron and Wine, Portugal. The Man, The Microphones, and Deerhunter but to no avail. I do occasionally enjoy NMH, but to a much lesser degree than most indie listeners. It wouldn't be such an issue if I didn't find anything I liked from the genre, but due to the fact that I adore the albums in this list, it bothers me that I'm unable to find more. I refuse to believe that what I listen to now is all the genre has to offer me. I know these albums represent a diverse set of indie sounds (or very few, if any at all) but I'm rather desperate so even the most distant recs will be appreciated.
