08.28.26 | Swann's Way is starting to become a very slow read for me. I was hooked initially cause there were so many passages that I directly related to, but the latter half of the book has really moved away from that beautiful stream-of-consciousness to memories of a love story not involving the narrator. And there's 5 more of these things that I'll eventually have to get through. Proust really needed an editor lol. | cylinder
08.29.26 | from Wikipedia: “The last three of the seven volumes contain oversights and fragmentary or unpolished passages, as they existed only in draft form at the time of Proust's death. His brother Robert oversaw editing and publication of these parts.”
I know those aren’t the volumes you were referring to, but it’s kinda related still and I just thought it was interesting. Also probably good to know if you do plan on continuing. Actually I’m really glad you brought this up because while I was familiar with the existence of Proust as a writer, I wasn’t aware of this work at all. Not sure how it got by me, so thanks. Over 4k pages?? Wow. So Ulysses does have some competition, lol. | cylinder

If you look at pictures of the original manuscripts, they are a trainwreck. Proust would edit or change passages by taping separate, smaller pages of revisions next to the larger manuscript pages. It's also a fairly non-linear series since Proust uses stream-of-consciousness to bounce from one topic to another (e.g., the narrator smells a flower that triggers a memory from years ago that then takes up the proceeding 50-60 pages before we're brought back into the present). But right now the book has drifted away from him and we're exploring Monsieur Swann's exploration into love.
Proust is also notorious for his incredibly long sentences with one sentence totaling close to 800 words. So you have to work really hard to adapt to his style of writing as he will go on and on and on over a single thought. |
