07.03.26 | As someone who *mostly* listens to rock and metal and hardcore or whatever, for me the two GOATS who have very different styles are Kurt Ballou (hyper technical) and Jerry Cantrell (just heavy as shit but more melodic I guess). Kurt is just one of a kind but to me Jerry took everything great about the old school kings like Iommi and Hendrix and perfected it.
Ben is a close second for that first style, and it’d be a crime to not mention Chuck, but I feel his talent lies more with being an excellent songwriter and just really knowing how to pick out talent that meshed well with his style. Out of all the Death records and the couple dozen or so guys that played on those albums I really can’t think of a single weak link. All are excellent musicians that complimented his style flawlessly.
Chuck really might be my single favorite songwriter ever aside from maaaaaybe Luc Lemay, and I’d maybe throw Aaron Turner in there too. I don’t really know (or if anyone really knows for that matter) if DsO has a single “most important” songwriter but they’re up there for sure too. |

07.03.26 | Hetfield for riffs. As far as pure rhythm guitarists go he's top of the line still to this day. Unmatched down picking and timing as well |
cylinder
07.03.26 | Ballou above Ben? I mean he’s awesome too but idk |
Wildcardbitchesss
07.03.26 | Yeah despite what a lot of haters might say, I’ll agree that Hetfield is a fucking god. He deserves every bit of praise that he gets. It’s kinda hacky to even bring this up but just imagine that band’s trajectory had Cliff lived. You had the best rhythm guitarist / vocalist and best bassist in the thrash scene together. Hell, add Mustaine and it really makes you wonder.
@cylinder
yeah. i’d take Kurt over Ben any day of the week. I love TDEP and of course Ben is wicked talented in his own right, but Kurt is capable of that level of shredding and just writes the meanest fucking riffs. Again, this ain’t putting Ben down, 43% Burnt is fucking MEAN, but Kurt has like, 30 riffs that are on that level, and I generally find that his guitarwork is usually more in service of the song itself, where I feel like Ben writes cool guitar parts and then constructs the song around them. That’s totally just vibes tho, obv I have no fucking clue what either of their songwriting processes are like.
And I really just think Converge has a much stronger discography overall. Again, love The Dillinger Escape Plan, but Converge has twice as many records and I feel like at least half of them are just as good as anything Dillinger put out… but I also know that I just love Converge that much. I know not everyone is as crazy for records like Dusk in Us, Bloodmoon, or even the two new ones. Hell, I even love their not so well received compilations and even Halo In a Haystack, even tho there’s a ton of overlap there. He’s genuinely just my favorite guitarist ever, and I truly don’t think he’s ever written anything subpar at any point in any Converge track.
And when we’re talking output from outside their main projects, Kurt just absolutely bodies Ben. Granted, most of that is production, but he’s a beast behind the boards and frankly, Ben hasn’t done anything memorable outside of Dillinger. Yall remember Giraffe Tongue Orchestra? Yeah me neither.
But really, they’re the two best guitarists in the genre, like, by a wide margin. The difference between them is damn near negligible, but they’re head and shoulders above everyone else. |

07.04.26 | Death Magnetic does indeed have riffs. Metallica are also king of down-picking and if it wasn't for me getting into them at the tender ages of 11 and 12, I wouldn't have picked up the guitar. Been playing for 25 years and it was mostly Hetfield that inspired me - obviously as time has gone by I've become attuned with a mad array and amount of music that demonstrates good musicianship. I take pride in how I play - I sort of mix metalcore and screamo, maybe a little thrash and a touch of prog. As long as the weather is palatable I go and sit in the high street of my town and play those styles on an acoustic guitar. I always make money if I chuck a hat on the floor but I like it when people say "oh, that's good!" or "you're very talented". Keeps me entertained.
