04.05.26 | Unions are for everyone, agreed! I work a computer job mostly from home but it's still nice having a union protection, even though the place where I work is generally pretty non-exploitative |

04.05.26 | Yeah unions being just for laborers is kind of a thing of the past. They're really for any business that has any kind of power structure.

no thankfully, i just meant if i could go back in time i'd probably get into the trades like plumbing or something. working on as well as buying and selling cars is my predominant hobby. i've been trying my hand at welding and stuff in the garage letely. i actually have degrees in education, lit, and political science. i also minored in econ. i do absolutely nothing with those degrees anymore albeit my econ background has been pretty helpful! |

04.05.26 | Customer service manager at Kroger, so yeah, union.
I'd rather have it than not, but where our district is spread across three right to work states, membership is low, and less than 25% of the district's employee base has voted on the last two contracts. It's give and take. Good LOA policies, decent enough pay and benefits, and anyone who puts in five years is guaranteed a pension. There's always this sense that it could be significantly better, and that the union leadership does the bare minimum.
The major downside as a manager too, is that it's damn near impossible to fire someone once they've gotten past the probation period short of someone stealing on camera or walking out. |
Get Low
04.05.26 | I do not live in a right-to-work state and I'm kind of thankful for it because there are a lot of people where I work who hate the union and take their protections for granted. I'm not confident that we would be able to consistently re-certify.
"it's damn near impossible to fire someone once they've gotten past the probation period short of someone stealing on camera or walking out."
That's a good thing though. Job protection! But if you're a manager who is simultaneously in the union then I could see how this could be a conflicting problem.

04.07.26 | It's hit and miss. It's great in the sense that you'll never be fired on the spot for anything barring theft, falling for a scam, or walking out, but you've definitely got a small number of people who game the process to get away with doing the absolute bare minimum. That comes with every job though, union or non. It's just perhaps a slightly bigger headache with the union. An example being one of our departments has a closer who's been showing up to work drunk and smelling of alcohol on and off for over a year. He'll do it whenever a salaried manager isn't scheduled parallel to his shift (which has been the norm over the last eight months) so the most that can be done is giving him a verbal warning and write up based on customer complaints. After the latter, there's a 90 day probationary period where the next course of action is suspension pending termination, so he corrects course, counts down the days, and as soon as it's over, he'll repeat ad naseum. And where he's part time, he can only be scheduled according to his availability by the contract, so he can't be scheduled a different shift so long as he's satisfied with getting the minimum amount of hours. He's basically in a box closing the fuel center a few days a week, he gets the job done, but still, it's a constant headache and store management doesn't exactly see it as a priority when it comes to making a surprise visit to catch him and do a screening. Relative to other problems at least. Night crew has similar issues, and it's a massive problem considering freight is perpetually underworked, and the store always looks like shit. Probably more indicative of the state of our store/district management however than it is the union itself, but it definitely makes sorting out issues more nuanced than other companies in the same industry. |

04.07.26 | funny timing, I'm about to file a grievance on an action by the admin at my work. They denied someone a lateral transfer because "it'd be too hard to fill her position if she leaves." Where I work they can deny a transfer for any reason as long as they don't allow the same transfer to someone else with lower seniority during that time. Transfer requests are taken once every two weeks though, so if you work in a place where you can justy apply for a transfer whenever then nothing like that would apply. You just gotta know what's in your contract. |
