Macabre Mementos Retrospective

A very influential but short lived brutal death metal label. Put out some of the best and weirdest bdm/slam out there. A very short list of releases, only 17. Excluding complications, so MM-010 (a vomit remnants comp that i own) is not being reviewed.
1Impetigo/Transgressor
Primitives

MM001
Split, EP, 1999

Both sides either are bad or mostly dull. Impetigo has an annoying live show, while Transgressor is pretty heavy death doom. Transgressor is the better one but suffers from a demo style production.

2.5
2Vomit Remnants
Supreme Entity

MM-002
Album, 1999

A classic in ‘Slamming Gangster Groove’. I love how uncanny the drum machine sounds, almost like it’s human. I haven't heard drum programming that good in any other band. It has cues that modern slam would take, such as a more liberal use of pinch harmonics. The samples, while long, are entertaining enough to sit through. It's excellent slam, not too much to say.

4.5
3Christ Denied/Bastard Saints
Christ Denied/Bastard Saints

MM-003
Split, Album, 2000

Christ Denied: Its decent brutal death metal, but has a muddy guitar tone. The drum machine is pretty well done, and the gutturals are about as filthy as a United Guttural release. It changes in styles but stays in a very rap influenced flow. Not too much to say. 3.5

Bastard Saints: Holy shit is this band is crazy. I’ll start with the dual vocals. The gutturals and black metal rasps trade very much, from verses to lines. It creates a huge sense of urgency. Everything is going so fast that it’s falling apart at the seams. It actually reminds me of a more brutal Malignancy. Riffs are stuffed with brutality and pinch harmonic mayhem, adding to the sense of urgency. Will check the band. 4.5

4Internal Suffering
Unmercyful Extermination

MM-004
Album, 2001

Another one for the ‘best album covers’ deposit. This is absolutely pummeling brutal death metal. A muffled, raw production but still brutal as hell. Not a big fan of the vocals, but the drumming reminds of Forensick with how audible it is. That is a big complement. It enhances the breakneck speed of the riffs and compliments the heaviness. There’s also some nasty pinch harmonics to add even more to the speed. An absolutely killer EP.

4.0
5Dripping
Disintegration of Thought Patterns

MM-005
Album, 2002

while quite try-hard, it's still an interesting slab of slam. the production, vocals, and guitar are all on point, but the sampling seems very forced. I get it, it’s avant-garde. Doesn't mean that everything works 100 percent.

3.0
6Vomit Remnants
Indefensible Vehemence

MM-006
Reissue, EP, 2002

Originally released in 2001. It’s more Vomit Remnants, what more can I say. The production is more clear and there’s a bigger gangster influence on this, like 00 Buck Shot. Again, excellent slam.

4.5
7Wormed
Planisphaerium

MM-007
Album, 2003

This album feels like it was stolen from ten years in the future. production is very modern sounding, yet not sterile. the riffs are progressive, but not enough to be prog metal. it’s still brutal as hell, with dissonance and weird riffs sprinkled in throughout. only real album i’ve found where it truly feels futuristic to listen to.

4.0
8Digested Flesh
The Answer to Infection

MM-008
Album, 2004

I’ve already done a review for this, so I'll keep it short. If you love slam, listen to this. Clear production, but also with insane vocals, well made songs, and excellent drumming. Give it a shot.

4.5
9Terminally Your Aborted Ghost
Slowly Peeling Flesh From Inside Of A Folded Hand

MM-009
Album, 2005

I was kind of expecting Dripping to be like this. Some ideas feel messy but a lot feel like they stick to the wall. Tons of dissonance, outside influence, and vocal styles. At times it does feel a little monotonous, even though it’s only 28 minutes. Still a solid listen.

3.5
10Digested Flesh/Inhuman Dissiliency
Accumulation of Eviscerated Remnants

MM-011
Split, Album, 2006

This was one of the last things that Digested Flesh put out. Inhuman DIssiliency was one of those bands that would do a split with any band they could find in their niche. DF’s samples go for far too long and the music is all right. ID is overall a pretty decent slam band, but nothing too spectacular.

2.5
11Proteus
Personal Narrative of Cognitive Dreamscapes

MM-012
Album, 2007

Wild that an obscure myspace band was signed to this label. This among the stranger releases, along with Dripping and TYAG. There’s post metal sections, slams, and hardcore vocals. The riffage reminds me of Obscura but much faster and chaotic. Everything here feels very tight yet all over the place. Quite the fitting band to put out one release and fade into obscurity.

One post metal section goes for too long and butchers the pacing. 4th Dimensional Turbulence II: Beneath Forrest Coves goes on for almost 4 minutes and is only enjoyable for a minute or so. The rest is pretty damn good, even if its influences are a bit apparent at times.

3.5
12Gorevent
Abnormal Exaggeration

MM-013
Album, 2008

The production on this one is an interesting type of raw. The guitar tone is sharp, but fighting through layers of mud. The drums are quite in the mix, but the vocals are very buried. It’s quite a claustrophobic feel. As for the music, it’s very meat and potatoes slam death metal. I know some love this album but the songs are just not as well structured as I would hope for this type of praise. Still, you can’t go wrong with this album.

3.5
13Abnormyndeffect
Betwin

MM-014
Album, 2008

Czech grind is famous for how kooky it is. From the absolute chaos of bands like Mincing Fury and Guttural Clamor of Queer Decay, to bands like this. Where something is off, but you can’t quite place your finger on it. Odd time signatures, hardcore Romanian vocals, and pitch bends stuffed where you couldn't expect. It actually reminds me of Kobong at times. There’s also some inhaled vocals for the breakdowns. It's a very enjoyable slab of Czech deathgrind/BDM.

4.0
14Gorevent
Worship Paganism

MM-016
Album, 2010

Now we’re talken. This is a great example of a slam album done just right. A large but still raw production, sick slams, excellent drumming, and a plodding bass. I wish I could read the lyrics, since I also like the theming. Well done song structures too. I was expecting Abnormal Exaggeration to be like this, but this is a very underrated album. Hop on it slam freaks.

4.5
15Blunt Force Trauma (JPN)
Vengeance for Nothing

MM-017
Album, 2012

This band reminds me of Internal Bleeding a bit too much for my liking. I love them as much as the next guy, but at least have other influences in your band. It’s basically their sound but leaned more into hardcore and deathcore territory. The drumming is criminally shoved in the back here. You can’t have an active drum beatdown and treat it like any other drum performance. It’s still decent slam, and there's a lot of work in the vocal department.

3.5

Conclusion: You can’t go wrong with a Macabre Mementos release. One dud out of 17 is exceptional. If you see the logo on the back of a CD in a record store, pick it up. You won’t regret it.
