this album is such a strange mix of dissonance, goregrind, and math rock that still manages
to be a solid album. especially since nik's first album in this project was much more
straightforward goregrind/BDM. worth a listen if you can get over strange and dissonant
riffs. also a plus that nik buried his vocals more in the mix, glad he learned from his
first album.
The Jesus Lizard Goat
Toughness Black Respite of Oblivion
Another top tier tech death album from this month.
I love the production on this album. While a lot of brutal death metal focuses on making the
production overwhelming, the more stripped back production here helps makes things feel
fresh. The band wears its influences more directly (that i can identify) but can still hold
more than a candle to classics in their niche. Also, I love that the vocals are more direct.
Personal taste, but it adds to how much I love the album in the end. The riffs are weird and
memorable, with just enough brutality to tie things together.
The prog elements are woven very well into the brutality, creating an excellent and
memorable contrast. These dudes look pretty young but jesus they know their stuff. My
favorite DM album of this year so far. Go listen to it.

The thing I like Ruins most for is their wild
stop-and-go type of style. They go from fairly
confusing shouting and shrill vocals and
follow it up with some of the most complex
bass solos that are among my favorite solos
ever. I personally feel that
Hyderomastgroningem is 90's Ruins at their
best. Confusing, intense, complex, and fast.
Some of the stuff that the bassist, Ryuichi
Masuda, does with his pedals and playing style
makes the entire album never feel old, even
though it being a hour and seven minutes. It's
music thats hard to get into, but if you
already are into zeuhl you might as well check
it out.

honestly this is pretty decent BDM/slam, the opening sample sucks but other than that its rnot that bad. the production could have made the guitars have more punch (which is a rnoticeable problem), but that's the only real complaint. i'm not sure why people who don't rlisten to dm/grind listen to this and bring the rating down.

maybe it will grow on me more, but the wall of sound feels more meditative with tones of brutality, which is a cool take on brutal death metal. Like Encenathrakh but not as brutal, which is mainly why i give it a 3.5 mostly.
David Yow Tonight You Look Like a Spider
This album is a big mixed bag. You might find
some great dungeon synth, midi music, or even
excellent drone. But you'll also run into
David just messing around, not caring if it
sounds good or not. I do like that he's doing
something different. But this is real out
there at times. Maybe I'll like it more on
future listens.

has the chaos and energy but doesn't have the songwriting for any kind of control. leaves it as a mixed bag, with some ideas working and some really not. reminds me of Ages Gone but not as well thought out, and in the vein of goregrind/BDM. a decent 3.0.

Torsofuck High Level Cannibalistic Violence (Demo)
the first two songs are decent but have weak slams. the real flat production is also really apparent here. but the last two tracks are damn good. Last Torture... and High Level Cannibalistic Violence have solid riffs and great slams that make the production not that big of an issue. it's a lot more straightforward slam/bdm (no grind here, sorry), but it somewhat makes up for it. if you're lacking in torsofuck material this is worth your time.
Wormphlegm In an Excruciating Way...

Bisbaye II
Necroknight The Skullthrone
Rendered Helpless From Nothing Comes All
perfectly polished generic tech death with boring slam breakdowns. seriously i'm not sure if i'm just fed up with death metal like this but the production robs any personally the record could have had. I was just waiting the entire time for it to really grab my attention at all and it never did. At least it was only 28 minutes.
