biweekly digz: filth, still
been checking out a lot of music lately for the past while, here's what i got |
| 1 | | Pyrexia Sermon of Mockery
jesus christ that's probably the most brutal cover art i've seen for death metal. anyway, great proto slam with a muddy production dragging it down. would love a rerecording already, wish they didn't give that treatment for their worst album.
3.5 |
| 2 | | Internal Bleeding Voracious Contempt
production has been growing on me, the vocals remind me of Deathklok, which i find funny. filthy proto slam with great riffs, pretty meat and potatos. but the bass is damn great.
4.0 |
| 3 | | Internal Bleeding Perpetual Degradation
Early internal bleeding with a better production. still very meat and potatos slam.
4.0 |
| 4 | | Suffocation Breeding the Spawn
highly underrated. each song builds up to a nasty slam breakdown, with the bass doing what it should in death metal: punctuate the heavy riffs. highly underrated and i return to this one a lot more than their debut.
4.5 |
| 5 | | Suffocation Effigy of the Forgotten
great riffs and beefy production. not too indulgent in the slam riffage, which makes it feel like a reward. pretty representative for all of BDM, great beginner stuff.
5.0 |
| 6 | | Torsofuck / Lymphatic Phlegm Disgusting Gore And Pathology / Polymorphisms To..
the torsofuck side is pretty nice without the samples, and the lymphatic phlgem side is a odd slice of goregrind. will i return though? probably not. still pretty good.
3.5 |
| 7 | | Origin Origin
decent tech BDM, with pretty aggressive vocals. songs seem really fun to play, with lots of primal chugging with the almost deathgrind approach. drumming is really good and the bass props up just enough to elevate their sound. a really good first album.
3.7 (not feeling a 4 but its close. probably because this type of music is a bit much at 29 minutes.) |
| 8 | | Necrocide Vomit Forth Blood
very nice proto slam in the vein of devourment. excellent drumming and slams all around.
4.0 |
| 9 | | Lost Soul Chaostream
really been returning to this album, and it's as great as i remember. great brutal chugs surgically placed with the techy riffs. Christian Meat and The Hidden Law are fantastic. a lot less filthy than most of the BDM i listen to now, but this was my first real death metal album. more people need to check this album out, at least.
4.5 (still) |
| 10 | | Katastrophic Khaos Xenokastic Slaghter
terrible avant-garde metal. they take 20 minutes and make it feel like an hour with how repetitive it is. start with pitch shifted shredding, then a couple djent riffs or a hamfisted post metal section, then more shredding. repeat ad nausum for 20 minutes. album completed. whats even worse is that there's good ideas that are just wasted.
1.5 |
| 11 | | Tomb Mold The Enduring Spirit
proggy death metal that has few ideas and goes for too long. really drained my energy for the rest of the day, so i was not happy.
2.5 (snoozefest after 20 minutes, wish they had more ideas.) |
| 12 | | Circle of Ouroborus Eleven Fingers
really weird black metal. people say this is post punk, but this reminds me heavily of dream pop in terms of the vocals. its very hazy and they take a backseat. synths are pretty nice and the drumming is excellent. the black metal rasps are nice when they pop up in the haziness.
3.5 |
| 13 | | Burzum Hlidskjalf
almost top tier dungeon synth. banger after banger on this album. dosent reach the heights of the last half of daudi balders, but in terms of consistency this is better. the vibe is very moody and contemplative, and the melodies are great.
4.5 |
| 14 | | Neoandertals Neanderthals Were Master Butchers
really strange brutal death metal. the bass rumbles loudly and goes all over the place. the drums match the primal strangeness of this, it feels like the whole 'circle hole, square peg' saying in the best way possible. if you want something new in your bdm then check it out.
4.0 |
| 15 | | Six Feet Under Nightmares of the Decomposed
bad death metal. everything feels like a robot is playing it, and chris barnes is really trying but failing. best song on here is The Noose, there's a weird rap metal energy to it that makes it easy to sing along to. THE BODY'S JUST TWITCHING THERE, EEEEEEE EEEEEEE
mostly just the boring type of bad, though.
1.5 |
| 16 | | Suicide Silence Suicide Silence
i mentioned in a soundoff that this is deathcore filled with the worst metalcore tropes. it's just really annoying and repetitive.
2.0 |
| 17 | | Anal Birth Infantbutchering
pretty nice gorenoise. i wish it leaned more into feedback rather than in between songs, but it has a very claustrophobic feel in the oddist way. the drum machine feels like its done through a radio transmission through the noisy production. not bad.
3.5 |
| 18 | | Casket (CAN) Mutilated
bdm with a production so bad that it sounds like a wash of noise. again, 20 minutes that feel like an hour. they broke up right after this, so who knows if the actual music was that good.
2.0 |
| 19 | | Disordered Disfigured Corpse
bdm/goregrind with some dungeon synth interludes/outros. i don't remember very much from this but i remember it being good but nothing special.
3.0 |
| 20 | | Rex Viper Turbocharger Deluxe
mostly not that bad, but it really has its valleys and plateaus. a lot of it is competent dad rock, but some of it makes my soul wither. also blowing loads of cash on a 55 minute music video is the worst financial decision that you can do for a band just starting out, but what do i know.
2.0 |
| 21 | | Spinal Fluid Primordial Indifference Demo
great meat and potatos slam. pinch harmonics and features makes this feel quite influenced by peelingflesh, but still stands out in terms of songwriting.
4.0 |
| 22 | | Bloated Data The Aesthetic of Death
very aggressive harsh noise. the sound collage and how the feedback pulsates feel like a brutal assault on your ears. can be also very anxiety inducing. the sound collage loops do great in making this release stand out.
4.0 |
| 23 | | PeelingFlesh PF Radio 2
already did a review, but this ep is mostly for the big PF fans. lots of moshable riffs but enough ideas sprinkled in to make me wait for the next release.
