| finished my first book!
I recently completed my first book of poems (first book ever too). It's called The Burning Kite, named after one of the poems. This is probably my greatest accomplishment thus far. I am very, very excited. Now begins the publishing process. I considered self-publishing, but honestly, I think it's good enough that I shouldn't have to do that. I do have a few starting points in mind, but any tips/leads on publishing would be greatly appreciated.
I've actually had most of the poems that went in the book ready for quite a while now - what delayed the book's completion was this really long one that was really straining my brain. So when I finished that one, that's when the book was finished. I'm gonna include a link to that piece here, because I think it might be the best thing I've written thus far. Feedback would be appreciated, but take your time though, as it's a bit long (18 pages). It's called 'Fear of Fiction.'

08.28.25 | If anyone has any leads on publishing, here's a bit more context about my style: it's very postmodern. My strongest influences are modern poets like John Ashbery, Hart Crane, and Wallace Stevens, and that gets mixed with more contemporary poets like Bob Hicok, Mike Doughty, and Patricia Lockwood.
I purposely play around a lot with form, and there's also a lot of irony and satire. That said, the satire comes from a place of compassion and a longing for connection.
The main themes of the book are the fallibility of our perception (the poem The Burning Kite is about a time I saw a shooting star and my first thought was that it was a burning kite. True story.) and the increasing social isolation we're seeing in the modern world. The book is funny and serious at the same time, and I think many will find it very touching. | Gameofmetal
08.28.25 | Nice! Honestly unsure what the vibe is with trad publishing poetry these days is. I would guess even harder than fiction, which is already very hard, since it has less commercial appeal but try for sure. | cylinder
08.28.25 | Fortunately I live in the Twin Cities (MN), which is actually kind of a hotbed for poetry. There's a lot of really great small presses around here.
Just thought I'd ask if anyone had any connections for a quicker 'in' I guess haha | efp123
