| Revisiting Punk
Been revisiting the genre due to my local punk scene. This was the first genre I was really into, so it’ll be nice to see if my favorite punk records still go hard. Most of these were ripped onto old tapes from the early 90’s, which helped me get into cassettes and stuff. | | 1 |  | Circle Jerks
Group Sex
I listened to this tape a ton and it was one of my top tier favorites. I still remember every single lyric from this 15 minute album. Riffs and drumming are great, with really engaging lyrics. There’s just enough going on instrumentally for everything to come together nicely. Band has always been known for short runtimes and little filler but this is the band's apex. Too bad I gave the tape away.

I don’t know what it is, but it just does not go as hard as it used to. The riffs are fairly one note and mostly mid tempo, and the vocal performance doesn't keep me engaged. Used to be a favorite of mine. Not sure if i just demand more out of my music now or what.
There are a few tracks that i can vibe with with their earlier songs, like I Don’t Wanna Hear It and Screaming at a Wall that are real fast and aggressive. The further the record goes the more mid tempo they become, which struggles to keep my interest. Kinda shows what I want out of hardcore, and this is not it, mostly.

Suicidal Tendencies
Now this brings back a little nostalgia. Mike Muir’s semi-whiny vocals immediately stand out, which is pretty good most of the time. It kind of impresses me how wacky but serious the lyrics are. Instrumentally there’s great stuff all around. Even if the lyrics suck the instruments make up for it. I Shot the Devil is a standout track. I still really don’t like I Want More. It’s like I Saw Your Mommy but nothing makes up the bad lyrics. At least its the only bad song on here.
It’s a nice combo of thrash and hardcore, with both sides getting an equal amount of time. The solos and riffs are great all around. Still has just enough problems to keep it away from true excellence.

I didn't really feel much from this EP, most likely because I ask more from my music now.

Living in Darkness
Short and sweet coming in at 20 minutes, this is some great surf punk. The vocals and lyrics are fantastic, with the semi-melodic riffs and grooves keeping everything locked down. Gives off Dead Kennedys vibes in terms of riffage, but it has its own edge. Kind of odd in that respect since the two debuts came out at around the same time.

Some nice semi-melodic punk. The vocals and lyrics don’t really hit as hard, although it does have its high points. Everything is pretty on point, although I don't have much to say about it.

Bad Brains
I personally listened to I against I more since I had it on tape, but this goes super hard. It's fast, aggressive, and has memorable riffs, which is all I demand out of hardcore. But then they manage to balance things out with Dub that doesn't feel out of place of Bad Brains messages in the album. The Dub sections feel a lot more heartfelt and genuine, with the hardcore there to have some fun. Top tier hardcore here, required listening.
The vocalist is also fantastic, they could not have chosen anyone better. His range is quite varied, with him switching from not entirely atonal yelling, to high highs with ease. He’s so damn good with whatever’s thrown at him.

More Beer
I swear the production makes the guitars feel so flat. The first half of the album isn't funny and the songs are boring. So when great songs pop up like I Am a Doctor, the production stifles the cool riffs going on. Really feels like songs like Have a Beer with FEAR would be better without this problem. Speaking of, the vocalist is pretty good, but he’s stuck with singing about boring subjects like, well, beer.
Bomb the Russians is as funny as it is straightforward. Thank god they got some humor in them. The second half of the album has the more interesting songs, which is a bit of a mixed bag. Welcome to The Dust Ward seems like wasted potential, but that's the only real dud. Waiting for The Meat is a bit too strange to work, but otherwise the ideas tend to work.

Speak English or Die
This album is so good i’ve kept it with me all this time. Heavy as all hell crossover thrash that’s also funny. Zero duds and manages to sprinkle in some dark humor to spice things up. On a good day this is the best crossover thrash album ever made.

08.04.25 | I listened to Fear fairly often from about 1988 through about 1995. Wasn't my favorite punk band, but it was rather entertaining. Ultimately, the unsigned punk band I was invited to join as lead guitarist in 1998, Girl Friday, became my favorite punk band, even though our founder & lead vocalist ended us two weeks after we recorded our first album a year later. |
