Bad Album Binge: Death Metal

This is where I look at genres I like and find bad albums for it and do mini reviews for em. Partial credit goes to NexCeleris. A handful of albums here I just looked at his 2.0 rated albums on his RYM profile. It's harder to find bad albums on there than you think.
1Gorepot
Happy Hour

Slam Death Metal/Goregrind

This sounds like this was recorded in a tin can. The vocals are the typical inhaled vocals taken up to 11. It
sounds like he’s trying to recite an entire essay super fast with incomprehensible vocals. In short, it sounds way too over the top and stupid. Doesn't help that he never stops with the BREEE onslaught, so the slam riffs have zero room to breathe. The double kick is real high in the mix, which I actually kind of enjoy. Instrumentally, it ranges from decent slam to sloppy goregrind, to varying degrees of success.

The samples are garbage and go for too long. The album cover is some of the most hilariously bad I've ever seen. And the length is just too much for this type of music. There's no reason why this is over 40 minutes long.

Final score: 2.0
2Short Bus Pile Up
We Keep the Dancefloor Dirty with Bottles and Shit

Deathcore/Cybergrind

Muffled production and horrible samples? With a myspace emo edge? This is some special trash. The production is rather amateur, with the inhaled vocals even more annoying than Gorepot. Instrumentals are generic deathcore chugs and boring riffs. If one word defines this record, it's amateur. You can clearly tell that these were teenagers that spent too much time on myspace. They didn't even bother to add a bit of silence in between tracks, instead letting it cut out. There is one cybergrind song, which is better than the deathcore songs. It's competent and nothing is awful. Which is why there’s only one song.

Sure, the interlude is kind of cool and is a nice break from the trash. It may be just melodic riffs, but it's decent. So a hell of a lot better than most else on this album. At least it's only 20 minutes.

Final score: 1.0
3Artery Eruption
Driving My Fist Through Her Chest

Slam Death Metal

Another muffled production with gutturals that just feel lazy. Weak slams and the production stifles all of the other riffs. The samples are actually decent at times, but are mostly there to serve the band’s misogynistic message. It seems like a great parody of slam, except that this is totally serious and the band thought this sounded good.

This makes me realize just how important production is in slam, with the riffs and slams lacking any power at all. The drums are way too up in the mix, with the double kick sounding irritating. Everything on this album sounds like shit most of the time. Even when they get one thing right they get another wrong. The production is super shoddy and inconsistent, which leads to some problems being solved for brief moments.
Big highlight is D.C.D.W.N.K.C., with actually great slams and riffs. Drums still sound like a wet box but it's a clear improvement.

Final score: 1.0
4Party Cannon
Bong Hit Hospitalisation

Brutal/Slam Death Metal

Awesome album cover and just good brutal death metal. Riffs are technical and all over the place, making some nice jagged death metal. Gutturals are varied, which is a nice touch.
Production is also a breath of fresh air, with everything given just enough to shine but not steal the show. The samples are nice, too. Some of the slams are a bit hit or miss but these dudes know what they are doing. A very fun vibe once you get into it, which is exactly what the band wants to achieve.

The inclusion of the comically ping-y snare is also pretty funny. Judging from this band’s humor it was done to take the piss. The whole image of this band is a break from the overly serious yet over the top nature of brutal death metal.
The only gripe is the length, it wears down after the 30 minute mark. But 41 minutes of fun death metal is not the worst.

Final score: 3.5 (may bump up in future listens)
5Torture
4 - "Enduring Freedom"

Slam Death Metal

Now this is a weird take on slam. This is apart of a very niche subsubgenre called ‘slambient’. Basically, take what slam is known for (in your face breakdowns and brutality), and then tone things down a lot. What you have left is great background music. I get the appeal, but this is really not what I come to slam for. There’s a ton of small things that’s easy to overlook, which I find cool. At times they do some really weird time signatures to spice things up. Props for Torture for making their first full on slam album something different, but this demands more listens. It’s a bit of an enigma to slam fans, it just takes a while to fully understand.

Biggest problem is the length, which really started to wear thin 40 minutes in. And it's over an hour long, so it feels bloated.

Final score: 3.0
6Brain Drill
Boundless Obscenity

Tech Death Metal

Now THIS is what I call unremarkable tech death. Sure, they can play their instruments, but they don’t equate that to anything interesting, unlike a lot of really technical bands. Actually reminds me of heavy metal with how much pointless shredding there is for the sake of it. I can vibe with how some of the riffs flow into each other and stuff like palm muting. This just makes me want to listen to Skullgrid with how jagged and highly technical it is.

I’m not a fan of the gutturals, which are kind of guttural but you can still make out what's being said. I’m willing to say that this is barely death metal. Not that much downtuned and nasty tones, and using the higher register a ton. Still has good ideas, but reminds me of better bands in the same vein.

Final score: 2.5
7Pestilence
Levels of Perception

Tech Death Metal

I do see that maybe I’m not the best person to listen to this. I haven't really checked out pestilence (i’ll get to consuming impulse eventually), and this is a lazy rerecording of songs from their best era. Production is abrasive but honestly I kind of like it. I should listen to at least some of early pestilence before I come back to this. Until then I'll give this a subpar rating.

Final score: 2.5
8Waking The Cadaver
Beyond Cops, Beyond God

Slam Death Metal

Look at the album cover and title and tell me it's not awesome. The music, however, is something else entirely. The gutturals are alright, but the production shoves the vocals at the front. I’ve heard some death metal produced like this and I still think it's a terrible idea. Otherwise the production is nothing egregious, but the riffs and slams feel weak. There are some that do hit, but it heavily takes tropes from modern slam (mainly the overuse of squeal-y pitch bends).

Also noticing that the snare presence is very lacking doesn't feel right for a genre like slam. Even Artery Eruption got that right earlier in the list. The drums really got the short end of the stick here, which are supposed to be a driving force in slam, right behind the guitar.
Speaking of the guitars, it would do the band better to not have it so much in the background. There are some great slams and riffs that are a bit lost since it's shoved behind the vocals.
9Waking The Cadaver
Beyond Cops, Beyond God

This is perfectly fine slam. Overhated to all hell, and I see the appeal. Production makes the instruments feel weak, and this is in desperate need of a remix. Not bad, but could be better.

Final score: 2.5
10Cemetery Rapist
The Smut Circus

Brutal Death Metal/Goregrind

Where do I even start with this album? The production, the awful samples, the riffs, the drum machine, or the extreme length? This is some bottom of the barrel death metal, on the same level as Rapewalker. The drum machine cuts through the muffled, lo fi production like a hot knife. If you know anything about drum machines, that's not good. It makes things sound even more cheap. The production is awful, with everything feeling like it's recorded through a few mattresses. Samples are god awful and are cut together sometimes to sound even worse. Icing on the cake is that this album is 38 minutes long. Riff wise, it's dull. There's a decent riff here and there, but then the samples are there to drive me crazy.
The gutturals are of the comical BREE type, but are so low in the mix it may as well not be there.

Also I'm taking points off for one of the worst album covers I’ve ever seen. Jesus christ.

Final score: 0.5
11Being Killed
Massacre Of The Living

Goregrind/Brutal Death Metal

Yet another poorly produced goregrind album with a bad drum machine. Gutturals are bad, but at least the instruments are somewhat audible. They do let the bass do a bit of work, but it's some sort of joke since it's produced like garbage. It almost completely blends into the bad production. The drum machine is not as bad here, but at times it really cuts through the band.
Samples are thankfully not there enough to be an issue. The ones that are there are decent.
Riffs are decent but become mind numbing after a while.

Final score: 2.0
12Raped By Pigs
Squealing To The New World

Slam Death Metal

Actually decent slam. We got some modern slam with pinch harmonics and pitch bends. Production is pretty good and song structures are just sprawling enough for slam. There’s a bit of a sloppy edge at times, which is pretty cool. Vocals vary in quality at times, but mostly stick with the typical inhaled vocals. The touch of making the clean bass audible at times is a nice touch. Would I return to this? Probably not. But It's pretty good. Presentation wise it looks awful though. Band name, album title, and cover art screams bad slam a mile away.

Final score: 3.0
13Horrified Spirit
Rotting Away in Slime

Deathgrind

Now we’re back into the real trash. This feels like a punk recording with the guitar tone, and the production is decent for a demo. The vocals are barely guttural, and the band struggles to stay in time. Has the 16 year old high schooler vibe in how amature this is. There’s really weird production choices, like the use of reverb. I can hear the strings rattling on the second track. Not even Short Bus Pile Up was this clueless. This barely qualifies as deathgrind. Not complete garbage, but boy does this suck. It’s only 7 minutes long, though.

Final score: 1.0
14SikFuk
Diarrhea Duet

Goregrind/Pornogrind

I will say that I am a SikFuk fan. Of his first two albums. Everything after Teabagged at Birth is when Nik started getting even more over the top. This is the opposite of the first two albums. A muddled and murky production, an annoying use of pitch shifting, awful vocals, eye rolling presentation, and just disappointing. Really wonder how he went from fun goregrind/BDM to just bad goregrind. Some of the riffs are good, but the muffled guitar production really makes it feel super weak.

The samples are about the eye rolling subject matter, so it depends if you have a disgusting sense of humor. The drum machine is used in an okay manner, it doesn't slice through the instruments like it can. Not only does this album kind of suck, the fun aspect of SikFuk’s sound is now just really annoying. What a fall from grace.

Final score: 1.5
15Syphilic
The Indicted States of America

Brutal/Tech Death Metal

Completely unremarkable death metal. Everything is done just well enough not to be bad, making a boring record instead. Production makes everything lack punch, and the samples don’t help. Still are cool riffs, just boring. Also cover is kvlt as fvck.

Final score: 2.5
16Diminished
Regurgitating Rotten Semen

Brutal/Slam Death Metal

Now this is more like it. A brutal death metal band doing something a bit different. They use pitch shifters for the higher notes, which makes it more impactful. The winding song structures twist and turn in very interesting directions. Very surprised to see the quality in music, looking at the very questionable cover.
Architect of Design is a very fitting song title, with it downright impressing me with how wild it is but bringing it together enough for the slam breakdowns. Songs like that make up for the long length of these songs, which are from 2 - 6 minutes. Production is on point, too. There’s dual vocals, one being one note death metal growls, and the other being high pitched black metal rasps. There’s even an instrumental with acoustic guitar in it.

Final score: 4.0
17Buttholectomy
Maggot Infested Carcass Eruption

Slam Death Metal

Sample heavy modern slam with ultra triggered drums. Generic inhaled vocals, too. It really comes from the exact same sound and ideas as PeelingFlesh, but this band is moreso the annoying little brother. Instead of a strangely great genre blend, it moreso just puts in drug related samples and sounds like a lesser version. Samples are unfunny and don’t work with the song. I’m not saying this type of music is high art, but its been done so much better and just copies similar bands to a T. At least the constant unfunny samples are varied.

Final score: 1.5
Originally it was gonna be 2.0 but it's so annoying that I have to bump it down.
18Entrail Landfill
Promo 2025

Slam Death Metal

Two songs that have boring riffs and one note gutturals. Drum machine is done to a decent extent, which is nice. Production is decent for a demo, it’s just bland and with a bad sample. Second track shows promise, with strange riffs and trying out some weird song structures. But overall its okay.

Final score: 2.5
19Parasitic Infestation
Killzone

Slam Death Metal

More modern slam with a focus on sampling. I’ve come to see how easy it is to fuck up samples in modern slam, and here its done to varying levels of success. Some are edgelord cringe inducing, and some are okay. Riffs are on the good side of decent, with palm muting used. Vocals are deathcore influenced, which I actually find okay. I know by law, as a metalhead, I'm supposed to rage at any and all deathcore. But I don't care.

Hearing meme samples just makes my eyes roll, and this band does not have the restraint to not throw at least a handful in. I don’t care for this release otherwise if it wasn't for shit meme tracks like blunts that butcher the pacing and just irritate me.

Final score: 2.0
20Waking The Cadaver
Perverse Recollections Of A Necromangler

Slam Death Metal

Waking the Cadaver back up their best death metal cover and album name with the worst. As for the music, it's decent. Samples are annoying, but overall there’s good riffs. Again, I don't care that I'm supposed to flay anything related to deathcore, this is decent slam.

Final score: 2.5
