| Muppelope gateway list
aka (mostly) 00s indietronica/glitch/ambient pop shit that complements Yeule you are welcome let's go | | 1 | | Laurel Halo Quarantine
Starting in the deep end with this one, but this record is a rly unique subversion of artsy pop stylings that should hopefully click with you - it's murky and warped (though ultimately optimistic) and has that weirdo blend of dissociation and immanence. You'll get exactly what I mean when you first hear those vocals lol. Every Laurel Halo album is a different experience (though usually rooted in some blend of techno and weird pop), but her most recent is lovely gauzy ambient that I'd also rec if you're after a relatively succinct take on that fix | | 2 | | Macaroom Homephone TE
I rec this to everyone lol, it's a slow grower and very much a complement not an alternative, but nothing touches this for glitched-out reimaginings of pop. More playful and fae than Yeule by a long shot, but hits just as hard where it counts. Debut is very inconsistent but scratches a similar itch at points, rest of the discog has its moments but is largely a different vibe. | | 3 | | Tujiko Noriko From Tokyo to Naiagara
Every good ambient pop list needs a Tujiko Noriko nod
Fwiw this is far from her best output for me, but it (specifically Zipper and Kiminotameni) is perhaps the best gateway.
to either Hard ni Sasete (denser but betterer) or her collab with Aoki Takamasa (airier, more playful and does the IDM/glitch side to perfection). Her output from this decade is also excellent, but is more akin to Grouper if she finally made music that doesn't sound hungover | | 4 | | Lali Puna Faking The Books
This is *the* template 00s indietronica record in all the best ways, and the opener specifically lays down the fuzzed-out glitchy guitar bliss that Softscars dishes out in its warmer moments. First two albums are also good, but not as consistent as this one | | 5 | | Piana Muse
Twinkly glitchy drowsy pop reverie with periodic breakbeat crashouts. Much cheesier and more cinematic than Yeule (that's Kashiwa Daisuke production 4 u), but it's moody and similarly textured enough to sit well alongside them on the right playlist. First albums are alright too, but lack this one's immediacy or impact | | 6 | | Dntel Life is Full of Possibilities
This is very much of its time and more abstract/electronic than any of the pop fare on the list, but the way it processes stillness, gloom and (occasionally) dread is exactly the right tone. Fear of Corners, Suddenly is Sooner Than You Think and (especially) Why I'm So Unhappy ugh what a mood | | 7 | | Frou Frou Details
This sounds nothing like Yeule, though a fair bit similar to most of this list, but it is an indietronica/art pop crossover GOAT and I will never pass up an opportunity to recommend it | | 8 | | Supercar Highvision
Would never put this in the conversation if it weren't for Softscars but this, even more than Sweet Trip, is *the* gaze/electronic crossover experience. Vibes for the most part are warm+fuzz, but hit up the second half for a few tech-refracted parallels (Strobolights + I), and the closer is one of those beautiful moments that you can hear either as a massive dissociated space-out or (esp with lyrics) as this super-intimate act of soul-to-soul communion, which is a distant commonality with a lot of the best Yeule stuff for me | | 9 | | Baths Obsidian
fwiw I think this album is mostly cheeks, but it's a worthwhile shout if you're looking specifically for another tortured auteur charting a personal crisis across indietronic downer -type beat | | 10 | | Otay:onii Dream Hacker
This is more a palette that I wish Yeule tapped into more (think Fragments, Pocky Boy, Friendly Machine) than what they actually sound like, but don't let that put you off -- it's creepy post-industrial art pop in a similar vein to later-day era The Knife, by way of Chinese folk stylings. This one doesn't really kick into gear until the last three tracks (all excellent), but those are a great entry point and should prep you for her earlier record Ming Ming (which is a little less approachable but highly rec'd overall) | |

06.11.25 | Lets gooooo I needed this. | Demon of the Fall
06.11.25 | 2 is fantastic. 10 also. Am yet to penetrate the shroud engulfing Supercar's currently somewhat hidden appeal hmm.
I (weirdly) came across 7 the other day, thought about bookmarking it as a matter of urgency, yet failed to do so. Thanks for the reminder! | Muppelope
06.11.25 | Woohoo, thanks Johnny! Will be back with thoughts within the next few days or week or so. | RVAHC13
06.11.25 | This is a sweet list. 1 is still probably my favorite Laurel Halo album but Chance of Rain is a close second
I played Dream of Evan and Chan on one of my first radio shows and the programming director called me to ask if I did something to the transmitter because the broadcast sounded distorted.
Also Supercar is awesome. Them and Number Girl are probably my two favorite Japanese alt bands from that era. | JohnnyoftheWell
06.11.25 | lfg
have you heard Bloodthirsty Butchers? I'd put them slightly ahead of Number Girl on the strength of their highs (less consistent alb to alb for sure), but both absolutely bring it | RVAHC13
06.11.25 | Yes I have! They have some great stuff too, I like the split they did with Plus/Minus | RVAHC13
06.11.25 | If you haven’t already there’s a cool band called Boat that you might enjoy. I like the album Soul Thrash Train by them. | JohnnyoftheWell
06.11.25 | fucking love Boat (that album less so tbh, the next two a lot a lot), love a lot of what they went on to do as Natsumen too | RVAHC13
06.11.25 | Yeah the albums pretty bad but it’s the kind of bad that I like lol. I agree Listening Suicidal is definitely better |
