| Progressive Soul?
RYM has a genre tag called 'progressive soul' that definitely wasn't there 2 years ago. Though even before that, I've noticed there was a Wikipedia article for the term that popped up maybe 3-5 years ago. It's so interesting to see a term no one I know uses to describe a ton of albums I love. List are albums I like that are tagged this on RYM. What do you think, is this a good term? | | 1 | | Stevie Wonder Innervisions
Stevie's entire 1972-1979 run is tagged this. Where I'm Coming From has it as a Secondary.
Songs in the Key of Life is rated by RYM as the "best" progressive soul album ever. | | 2 | | Marvin Gaye What's Going On | | 3 | | Curtis Mayfield Superfly
Yeah his 1970-1975 stuff from what I see. | | 4 | | D'Angelo Black Messiah
This is his only with it as a primary, but Voodoo has it as a secondary. | | 5 | | Janelle Monae The ArchAndroid
This an Electric Lady as primaries, Dirty Computer as secondary (also I don't like Dirty Computer, but that's neither here nor there.) | | 6 | | Minnie Riperton Come To My Garden
Primary here, but drops to secondary for Perfect Angel and Adventures in Paradise. I can see that, this album is a lot of "progressive" musically? Maybe. | | 7 | | Shuggie Otis Inspiration Information
This and Freedom Flight as primaries | | 8 | | Erykah Badu New Amerykah Pt. One: 4th World War
Both New Amerykahs have it as primaries, but Mama's Gun and Worldwide Underground only have it as secondaries. | | 9 | | Meshell Ndegeocello Peace Beyond Passion
This has it as primary and Plantation Lullabies as secondary | | 10 | | Funkadelic Cosmic Slop
Funkadelic has way too many albums, but just know it's randomly primary and secondary for varying albums and missing for some. One Nation Under a Groove only has it for a second to name one more. | | 11 | | Parliament Funkentelechy Vs. the Placebo Syndrome
Parliament only seems to have it or secondaries, but it's consistent for their 1970-1978 stuff. | | 12 | | Hiatus Kaiyote Mood Valiant
First 3 have it as a primary, Love Heart Cheat Code has it as a secondary. | | 13 | | Sly and The Family Stone There's A Riot Goin' On | | 14 | | Sly and The Family Stone Small Talk
They decided Small Talk had it as a primary, but their 1967-1973 stuff is only secondary, except Dance to the Music, which isn't tagged it at all. | | 15 | | Betty Davis Nasty Gal
Only this album for a secondary, but makes sense I guess, it's a bit less conventional than the other 2. | | 16 | | Thundercat Drunk
Only this one and it's secondary. | | 17 | | Ohio Players Fire
Somehow 0 Ohio Players albums are tagged this, yet they're remarkably in a similar groove P-funk minus the aliens. Someone should fix that. At least for Skin Tight, Fire, and Honey. | | 18 | | L'Rain Fatigue
I don't like her music, but I've heard her first 2 albums and they both carry prog soul as primaries. | | 19 | | Gil Scott-Heron Pieces of a Man
Primary tagged prog soul artists that I don't currently listen to: Isaac Hayes, Gil-Scott Heron, Terry Callier, Baby Huey, Millie Jackson, Tim Maia Racional, Demon Fuzz, The Isley Brothers, Maxwell, Al Green, War, Michael Kiwanuka, Bilal, and even Solange Knowles
Secondary tagged prog soul artists that I don't currently listen to: OutKast's Aquemini and Speakerboxxx / The Love Below have it as secondaries, as does Sade's Love Deluxe, James Brown's The Payback, Lianne La Havas's s/t, 2 SPELLLING albums, Laura Nyro's Eli and the Thirteenth Confession, Prince's Around the World in a Day, some Jill Scott albums,
Scott-Heron, Laura Nyro and Tim Maia are probably the top of that list for me to check. (Ryus has rec'd me Tim Maia a few times in the past haha) | |

04.17.25 | 1. Is this a real sub-genre
2. What artists should be included?
3. Why would Small Talk be more progressive than There's a Riot and Fresh???
4. I know RYM genre tags are often nonsense, but this is probably more apt to find soul and funk I'd love while filtering out the less interesting stuff, so I'm kinda down? | mkmusic1995
04.17.25 | 1. I've seen this sub-genre over on AOTY as well, I think it's legit
2. Annie and The Caldwells
3. No idea
4. I'm down as well, Progressive Soul just kind of implies more than just soul standards and indicates a more varied approach to the genre. My example for artists to be included features elements of disco, funk and gospel all thrown together with soul as it's central sound. | Demon of the Fall
04.17.25 | 1, 4, 12 & the Erykah Badu album I've heard all slap
no clue re the topic at large tho | ArsMoriendi
04.17.25 | @mkmusic1995: would I dig Annie and the Caldwells? I see they just started their career!
She's labeled Christian Contemporary music...is every song about worshiping Jesus? | mkmusic1995
04.17.25 | It's definitely very gospel heavy in its messaging but I would say if you like Aretha Franklin mixed with funk and disco, I think you'd enjoy it! I'm not a religious fellow and I loved it and bought the vinyl lol | widowslaugh123
04.17.25 | Definitely check Demon Fuzz. Butkuiss told me to check them out and they rule | jrlikestodance
04.17.25 | Check out Embrya by Maxwell Ars. It's one of my fav Neo soul records and I think it falls into the category of progressive soul with its long song structures and live instrumentation | Veldin
04.18.25 | 1-5 are incredible and I also love Parliament, Funkadelic, and Gil Scott Heron | Cygnatti
04.18.25 | It's probably really because psychedelic soul is 100% real and there's a lot of psych soul adjacent music that isn't really psych but is similarly forward-thinking and yadda yadda.
That said, it is probably overtagged but what else is new. | Frippertronics
04.18.25 | You can vote for these you know, which is why they probably don't show up on some of them you are inquiring about. | ArsMoriendi
04.19.25 | @Fripp: I know I voted for the Ohio Player albums and some guy voted against haha, but it's 1 v 1 on those | Frippertronics
04.20.25 | I don't really agree with the Players fitting the prog soul concept entirely, anyways |
