03.19.25 | Tooting my own horn a bit, I know personally:
Slit Throats, New Grasping Machina, Kjostad, Scald Hymn, Zherbin, Worth, The Cherry Point, Viodre, Boar, Culled, half of Pedestrian Deposit, Koobaatoo Asparagus, and the current lineup of Black Leather Jesus including Richard Ramirez and his husband Sean who are friends of mine.
Abhorrent A.D. is also a buddy who's literally mastering MY newest harsh noise album for me right now. I have a tape on that label. |
cylinder
03.19.25 | dude that is so rad. those are a lot of my faves from this list haha, especially PD, KA, Black Leather Jesus and The Cherry Point.
and woah, sweet! that's probably my favorite noise label rn. which tape is that? link me
also, is Tanner Garza still in Black Leather Jesus? |
Colliiiin
03.19.25 | Dope list. Lots I haven't heard. Nice to see DBL, Commuter and Kjostad on here.
Would rec Form Hunter's full length self titled album and Maraud's Last Acts of Defiance, if ya haven't heard them. Also Nuori Veri, if you're interested in some less harsh, strange organic sounding noise related music. |
ThyCrossAwaits
03.19.25 | 1. I'll second Form Hunter and Maraud, both utterly amazing projects
2. I just added my noise project to the Sput database, I record as Ram Ventilation. Here's the tape that AAD dropped: https://ramventilation.bandcamp.com/album/mindbleed |

03.19.25 | not huge into harsh noise but The Rita lowkey exposed me to extreme metal when I was a tween cause he worked at Skull Skates and my dad took me there to buy my first skateboard from him. He was blasting some black metal in the shop and I remember my mind being blown and thinking “wtf is this music??” |

03.19.25 | @efp
2, 8, and 24 would be good starters I think. They’re all quite short, and not too brutal, but still creative.
All good appetizers for Cross’s link haha |
ThyCrossAwaits
03.19.25 | Well-deserved feature.
It’s so nice to see my two musical worlds collide like this. Harsh noise is a wildly misunderstood and underappreciated genre that should be able to really take root on a site like this if we make room for it. It’s an acquired taste but also quite literally life-changing when it clicks. |

03.20.25 | always nice when harsh noise gets a little love outside of Merzbow (to be fair most of the noise i listen to is from him)
plus making harsh noise is a pretty fun creative process. I would reccomend it, it allows a lot of creativity. I personally have a noise synth and couple pedals, one of them a looper pedal. Hooking my handheld radio to the pedal system yields fascinating results with the looper. Just my personal example. |

Joe Colley is my noise hero tho. Vomir just happened to win that round. |

03.20.25 | I think that listening to 100 harsh noise albums is great accomplishment. |
cylinder
03.20.25 | @Cross
I second everything you said, especially how the genre is misunderstood/underappreciated and how it's life-changing when it clicks. honestly these days, sometimes it's the only thing that really HITS anymore.
"making harsh noise is a pretty fun creative process"
I'd really love to try my hand at it! Just not sure where to start tbh :/ |

03.21.25 | Seeing how long I can get listening to 6 before finding out it’s just an hour plus of a distortion loop edit: oh no it’s changing. Kinda pretty I gotta admit |
MillionDead
03.21.25 | Harsh noise has the potential be basically pure catharsis like nothing else. When you just surrender your mind and body to the overwhelming texture, it can take you places. But yeah, I checked out Deep Jew and that shit was crushing, it absolutely ruled. |
CottonSalad
03.21.25 | once 6 sinks in, it doesn't let go.
kinda pretty [2] indeed |
cylinder
03.21.25 | Glad you dug Deep Jew, Henry, fuckin love that one |
cylinder
03.21.25 | still love what sach wrote back in the day for 6:
"Not much I can say about Vomir that I haven’t said at some stage before. The master of miasmatic, unchanging, nihilistic harsh noise wall. Impenetrably dense, uncompromisingly harsh, turbulent yet constant static noise. A post-Cageian take on noise; minimalist, emotionless and destructive beyond measure. Combine the noise with his eccentric persona and strange live shows (in which the crowd are handed out plastic bags which they are encouraged to wear over their heads), and you get something of an anti-musical masterpiece. Sensory deprivation as sound. Embrace nothingness, it’s where we all belong." |
brickhed
03.21.25 | "I'd really love to try my hand at it! Just not sure where to start tbh :/"
It can be really simple. If you have a pedal chain and some type of noisemaker, then its a start. Having a looper pedal really helps, but noise synths are a good avenue. I got a Shadow Dweller from Eletro Lobotomy, and it sounds as intended. There's a lot of DIY noise synth guys that make everything in house on Etsy.
Again, Eletro Lobotomy is a good place to start in the area. |
ThyCrossAwaits
03.21.25 | Buy a cheap contact microphone, a cheap distortion pedal, and a cheap delay pedal and you’ve got yourself a noise rig for under $250 |
cylinder
03.22.25 | Shit, thanks guys, I’ll definitely look into it. |

03.22.25 | Romain (Vomir) is a wonderful and hilarious person and incredibly prolific artist.
