Brutal Prog

Thought I would make a list on my favorite subgenre outside of death metal. Stuff is really interesting and diverse. List is the stuff I like the best, so those who are complaining about no Flying Luttenbachers i don't care. Basic rundown: dissonance, odd time signatures, weird rhythms, and the punk DIY attitude.
1Ruins
Burning Stone

Band that kind of started it all. Took inspiration from Zuehl bands like Magma and added their own spin on it.
Uses other influences such as noise rock and punk to make some weird music.
2PinioL
Bran Coucou

There a few types of brutal prog, with the main two being mostly influenced by progressive rock and the other by math rock. This is much more progressive rock, but I find it to be a masterpiece. Two underground French prog bands do a one time album, worth checking out.
3Happy Family
Toscco

I have no idea why this is brutal prog, this is a lot more Zuehl influenced. Still a great album, especially if you like progressive stuff.
4Yowie
Synchromysticism

Now into the hyper-complex math rock side of things. As someone who really likes super complex music this type of music really scratches my brain. This record has more streamlined song structures, but still has weird aspects that make it stand out.
5Behold... The Arctopus
Skullgrid

Early Behold The Arctopus was something else. It's the most chaotic and complex music I've listened to, but has very compelling melodies to tie everything off in a neat bow. I have zero idea why they dropped the melodies after Skullgrid, kind of took away the glue for everything.

Honestly curious for Tundra's take on this album.
6Breadwinner
The Burner

Now for the more noise rock side. I absolutely love Pen Rollings noise rock records, and this is pretty great. the super noise guitar tone and Pen's frantic way of playing make things pretty interesting. Also the bass on this is great.
7Lightning Bolt
Hypermagic Mountain

I don't really listen to this band much anymore, but it leans way more into noise than any other brutal prog band I've listened to. Uses a ton of feedback, with technical bass playing throughout. The bass drum duo is super tight and the drummer is crazy on the drumset.
