A Descent Into Noise
A list of me eventually getting into the most extreme "music" i can get my hands on. Kind of a timeline of my music taste overall to a certain extent. |
| 1 | | Big Black Atomizer
The album where it all started. I listened to this when I was first getting into music and it blew my mind. |
| 2 | | Rapeman Two Nuns and a Pack Mule
Started really getting into Steve Albini’s bands, and I liked that this was more aggressive and abrasive than his other discography that I knew of. |
| 3 | | Breadwinner The Burner
I started getting into Progressive Metal and Avant-Prog, but i still kept in touch with Noise Rock. A pretty great ep, this was around the time i wanted to get into more technical music. |
| 4 | | Butterglove The John Morand Session
Pretty good album with technical and noisy riffs, although it could have been great if not for the vocals being so buried in the mix. The vocalist is great but is shut off from her time to shine, which is a huge shame. |
| 5 | | Kobong Chmury Nie Bylo
Speaking of progressive metal, this was/is my favorite album during the time i was really into it. Developed songwriting, and clean production. I would suggest it. |
| 6 | | Lost Soul Chaostream
My first Technical Death Metal album. I remember going to a list online and this seemed pretty cool. It seems bland on the surface but if you pay attention there's cool riffs and great groove in this. Plus there’s just enough ideas tossed around to keep things interesting, but mainly the riffs hold it up. |
| 7 | | Gorguts Obscura
When I started listening to this album is when I decided to stop being a stupid little hipster and listen to more well known music. And I think it paid off. The riffs are weird but technical, the lyrics very compelling. |
| 8 | | Timeghoul 1992-1994 Discography
I’ve always loved Timeghoul, and there's even a single live show archived on YouTube (go check it out if you’re a fan). Technical but not too flashy, compelling lyrics and themes, varied and great vocals, and even leaning into more atmospheric elements. |
| 9 | | Gigan Anomalous Abstractigate Infinitessimus
I’ve been checking out Gigan recently, and I really like that its a more brutal take on Dissonant Death Metal. It's kind of overwhelming, but I think it's an interesting take. |
| 10 | | Unholy (FIN) From the Shadows
I originally got into Doom Metal thanks to my irl friend, but also because Clouded from Gorgut’s Obscura is my favorite song. It's slow, with the distortion crushing. The vocalist is fantastic, with enough range to add to the sound. The bass adds a lot of weight, adding much needed groove when needed. |
| 11 | | Wormphlegm Tomb of the Ancient King
This album's been slowly growing on me over the last 5'ish months, but its excellent long and atmospheric doom metal. Not for everyone, but still great. |
| 12 | | Merzbow Noisembryo
This was the first real noise album I listened to, after a little dude called Cactus Malpractice reviewed and was very open minded about it. At first I put it down and didn't return to it for a couple months. But once I tried to understand it more, I actually kind of liked it. Not by any means a beginner album for the genre, but it did it for me. |
| 13 | | Merzbow Pulse Demon
Listened to it and I really like it. It's intense and overwhelming, but not to the point that Noisembryo got. It really lets the album breathe just enough to have pretty interesting sounds while still keeping the intensity. |
| 14 | | Kazumoto Endo While You Were Out
Very interesting Noise album, I really like how off the walls it is. He plays around with sound collages and some beats here and there, with the noise constantly stopping, pulsing, and shifting. Also a pretty good beginner album. |
| 15 | | Hanatarash Hanatarashi
I kinda like that there's enough variety to keep things interesting, with the drums adding a lot when it does pop up. The last track even has synths in em. |
| 16 | | Merzbow Dust of Dreams
Checked out the more ambient side of Harsh Noise, which this album executes greatly. The first and last track are experiments in noise, with the title track using ambient loops with the harsh noise in the background, mostly. |
| 17 | | Merzbow Hybrid Noisebloom
Which brings to where I am right now, checking out more actual harsh noise outside of three albums. It's kind of like Pulse Demon where its abrasive but is able to have interesting influences. The Neo Psychedelia influences do pretty well in breaking up the intense noise.
Thats pretty much it, this is the third time I've tried to submit this list and every time it freaks out and doesn't post it. Hopefully it does this time. |
