| new State Faults r a n k e d
indubitably | | 14 | | State Faults Children of the Moon
Palo Santo
complex verses bite off more than they can chew + the chorus' cornball delivery of the album title devalues its resonance pretty considerably. easy lowlight, poor choice of single | | 13 | | State Faults Children of the Moon
Looming
still unsure whether No Gospel rly needs an ambient buffer, but this is forgettable enough that it's hard to have a strong opinion | | 12 | | State Faults Children of the Moon
Fragile Light
acceptable cryptic prelude | | 11 | | State Faults Children of the Moon
Heat Death
one of the heavier cuts, but oddly light in individual impact. no complaints about this one in sequence and the final few seconds are enjoyably punishing, but it brings the least of itself to the table overall. forgettable track. | | 10 | | State Faults Children of the Moon
Transfiguration
does great work ushering in the album's second half -- *that* point where it all kicks off midway is magic -- but you've gotta sit through that entire first verse to get there? this section is strained and reminds me the most of the earnest-mystic bullshit i rly did not love on Clairvoyant (looking atchu Sleeplessness). generally don't love the downtime on this one, but it serves its sequencing function undeniably well | | 9 | | State Faults Children of the Moon
Bodega Head
children of the Fray — but a much better take on '00s pop-rock radio whinge than that There Will Be Fireworks everyone jumped on for five whole minutes last year. like it more as a closer than as a song. | | 8 | | State Faults Children of the Moon
Distant Omen
gets v ratty v quickly. great shit, love the desperation in this one. lands lower in the ranking for its lopsided structure though - not sure that the haunting extended coda is quite worth the spotlight the band give it, and it's one of the few points where i can really get on board with the shade people have been throwing at the drums. great track otherwise. | | 7 | | State Faults Children of the Moon
Wind Song
can see people putting this higher - has a really distinct place in the tracklist and builds itself up rly gracefully, maybe the most 'tasteful' part of the whole record (even the busiest melodies here just feel like a vehicle for those lovely tones+dynamics). fades out a little quickly though, feel they might have done more with that build. hmm | | 6 | | State Faults Children of the Moon
Blood Moon
opening verse is hackneyed and loses points, but the rest of this goes from strength to strength - maybe the best vocal performance of the album, watertight songwriting, constant little shifts of momentum very nice very nice | | 5 | | State Faults Children of the Moon
Nazar
starts off at the gates of hell and somehow works itself into the rousing guitar highlight of the album?? okay! even if it does lay the brimstone on a bit thick at first, i love the progression on this one, which a great, well-earned change of tone. Clairvoyant t/t wishes it could be half the song this is | | 4 | | State Faults Children of the Moon
Leviathan
obvious crowd fav for all the right reasons - the motif here is so well-implemented and withstands so many shifts of dynamics and rhythm. amazing how well that shit holds the floor while all hell breaks loose. bunch of heart to this one too. would be higher if that "TEARS GOODBYE" line right at the end had less grating delivery, love everything else about it | | 3 | | State Faults Children of the Moon
Divination
fierce fucking shit, goes from one of the most technical tracks to one of the bullishly straightforward and is *so damn dark* at any given point that any friction in the transitions is borderline impossible to make out. vaguely reminds me of the atmosphere and songwriting MO on grievances-era Rolo Tomassi (along with Nazar and Distant Omen to lesser degrees | | 2 | | State Faults Children of the Moon
Palm Reader
ugh the way everything cuts out for the chorus on this is magic, reminds me of 2nd wave posthxc at its most heart-on-sleeve and melodramatic in the absolute best way. best skramz of the album maybe, best riff definitely. cannot get enough of this one. | | 1 | | State Faults Children of the Moon
No Gospel
well yeah no shit | |
JohnnyoftheWell

08.09.24 | Palo Santo below both the interludes made me chuckle but correct #1 and i love Palm Reader getting some shine | Sunnyvale
08.09.24 | I love Bodega Head and also love TWBF, so maybe there's something to it, but I'm utterly bemused by the comparison | Sunnyvale
08.09.24 | Anyway, Bodega Head, Leviathan, and Blood Moon are probably my top three in no particular order | lucazade22
08.09.24 | 10 is my fav followed by 4 | Prancer

08.09.24 | bodega is the most polarizing track it seems
#1 for me | Hawks
08.09.24 | 1-14 is 1. | YoYoMancuso
08.09.24 | the write-up for Divination is spot on, the way it morphs into absolute savagery with that simple drum pattern at 1:59 is unreal | JohnnyoftheWell
08.09.24 | hearing that part kick in before the album dropped was all I needed from any of the singles lol
and fwiw both Bodega Head and Fireworks smack of adult alternative radio from two decades ago more than they do of each other specifically, but that rly does seem the flavour of the decade for sputcore guitar bands hm | Lasssie
08.09.24 | Hawks is right you know, Johnny ol chap | Scoot
08.09.24 | disagreed with palo being a poor choice of single
they went with the weak link to set reasonable expectations
imagine if no gospel was the single | GreyShadow
08.09.24 | yeah, love Bodega
No Gospel, Leviathan, and Distant Omen are feeling like my top 3 | YoYoMancuso
08.09.24 | @scoot yeah that play is actually kinda genius | Hawks
08.09.24 | I love No Gospel so much and its def 1B but I feel like Divination is always gonna be my fav. | JohnnyoftheWell
08.09.24 | lol gotta agree Palo Santo was a good bait single, but cmon Leviathan was the obvious pick there | PurpleDino
08.09.24 | Having palo santo beneath literal filler tracks is ridiculous | JohnnyoftheWell
08.11.24 | good filler > cringe single | GBJ
11.07.24 | Hot take: palo santo is underrated | Lasssie
11.07.24 | Transfiguration is rated too low here as well, Johnny!!! |
