| cylinder's top 50 GRIND/PV
loosely ranked. grind and powerviolence. no emoviolence, cuz i see that as more aligned with skramz, which i could make a whole list for as well. i tried to keep it as pure as possible. some of these dip into metalcore a little bit, but as long as they were grindy enough, i allowed them. recs are welcome, especially cybergrind and powerviolence | | 55 | | Vaccine Human Hatred
REC #5
Loved this! Ear-splitting lo-fi production, super short songs, and hardcore-styled, caustically pissed off vocals sure are a winning formula for pv. Just wish there were a few more tracks of this goodness, this thing is so short it feels a bit like a tease!
4.1/5 | | 54 | | Death Toll 80k Harsh Realities
REC #4
Solid thrashy deathgrind. The music reminds me of a more intense version of 90s Napalm Death, when they started getting a bit more death-metally, and the vocals remind me of Discordance Axis with the back-and-forth from deep gutturals to screeching, cat-like shrieks. I'm glad the shrieks are there, because if it was only gutturals on top of these super-thick-and-chunky tones + super dense production, that would surely be too much "low." The grind parts on here are definitely intense, but the band leans a bit too much on the slower, more regular-sounding death/thrash metal-type riffs for my taste. They make a lot of the songs seem to drag on for me. More interesting tones would've been appreciated too. One thing I thought was really cool though was how the last track just keeps blasting and blasting until it abruptly cuts out. That was a nice, creative touch I think the album could use a little more of. Definitely solid, just not my bag exactly
2.9/5 | | 53 | | The Kill Make 'em Suffer
REC #3
Damn, this shit is FEROCIOUS. The shrieky vocals, tremolo riffs, and hyperfast blasts give it a bit of a blackened tinge, which I love (I love black metal and blackened hardcore as well). A bit more variety in the songwriting would've been appreciated, and it's maybe a bit monochrome overall, but since it's so short, those aren't too big of issues. It's still a beast of a grind album- I could def see putting this on next time I feel like punching a wall.
3.6/5 | | 52 | | Despise You West Side Horizons
REC #2
This was awesome! This is a 62-track comp with a few unreleased songs and bunch of others taken from various splits and other comps. And I really enjoyed every single track. I love the combination of male and female vocals- first time I've heard that in pv I think. And I appreciated how while the guy screams, the girl does more of a lighter shout, and the two voices mix very well, as opposed to the possible overkill of two vocalists both doing throat-shredding screams. Also love the blown-out bass- it adds a nice, crunchy underlayer to it all. Great dynamics within the songs too- despite there being 62 of 'em, they're all pretty distinct. And the slow parts are fuckin sick. My beef is the mixing on the vocals; sometimes they sit a bit flatly/awkwardly on top of everything else. That's easy to overlook though when the music is this potent.
4.2/5 | | 51 | | Spazz Crush Kill Destroy
REC #1
Enjoyed this a lot! Most, if not all of the pv I've heard so far is deadly serious, so some pv with a sense of humor was refreshing. Super cool that all three members contribute vocals- gives the music a really rowdy, communal, all-over-the-place feel that works super well with this type of music. Wasn't sure about the lowest-voiced guy's vocals at first, but they grew on me over the course of the album, as I think they add to the silliness/humor of it all. The samples are hilarious too. The production leaves a biiit to be desired, but I guess the amateurishness of it is part of its charm. Great stuff!

04.12.24 | just noticed my DM and BM lists got featured too, thank you, that's much appreciated! | cylinder
04.13.24 | Ok, to seriously answer the Pig Destroyer queries.. honestly, I just always found their songwriting a bit messy. Not keen on the vocals either. I saw em play Prowler in full live at Metal and Beer Fest, and it still didn’t win me over. I mean, it was intense, but there were so few moments I could really grab on to. I appreciate their influence and I def have much respect for the guys, just not my band I guess | jrlikestodance
04.13.24 | I recommend checking out Vaccine as well. Some of the shortest but most intense PV. P sure the members were also in some skramz bands I can't remember | Winesburgohio
04.13.24 | omg. yes! | BAT
04.13.24 | bangers, i forgot about 'not your friends' wonder if they ever put out anything since | AsleepInTheBack
04.13.24 | Have you tried some of the early napalm death stuff? You may dig. Sweaty and noisy and old (and importance). Or like Repulsion - Horrified (though that’s kinda death-y)? Just naming old bois. | cylinder
04.13.24 | i'm actually not too into the really early stuff like early ND, early Carcass, Repulsion, Terrorizer, etc. I can appreciate the influence but it gets old pretty quick for me. Not a big ND fan in general, but if I had to choose, my fave would probably be either Time Waits for No Slave or Apex Predator, which are both pretty recent | cylinder
04.13.24 | thanks for the recs, everyone!
anyone got any cybergrind? | DeadGuy
04.13.24 | Squash Bowels and Jig-AI | anode
04.14.24 | "I just always found their songwriting a bit messy" pig destroyer songwriting on prowler in the yard is revolutionary not just for grind but music in general. very odd complaint but they quite a bit different from most grind bands so i could see it not being your cup of tea. looking forward to checking some of these | AsleepInTheBack
04.14.24 | Have you heard the Atka album? More grindcore with mathcore than it is cybergrind but it’s getting there. Hectic and silly. | DadKungFu
04.14.24 | Ace list had a longer comment but it didn't post but ace list | cylinder
04.15.24 | gonna start working my way through these recs today, will report back | cylinder
04.15.24 | rec #1 up | jrlikestodance
04.15.24 | Glad you liked Spazz! I agree that the humor does not come off as corny and elevates it as most pv is quite serious or political. They are sooo fun | cylinder
04.15.24 | for sure! loads of fun, def gonna check the rest of their stuff sometime | cylinder
04.15.24 | sput really needs a powerviolence tag | cylinder
04.15.24 | rec #2 up | cylinder
04.15.24 | rec #3 up | cylinder

04.16.24 | Late find, goated list | jrlikestodance
04.16.24 | Glad you liked Vaccine! Was lucky enough to catch them on a goated Grind/PV lineup. My last two recs will be Hatred Surge - Deconstruct and Strong Intention - What Else Can we Do but Fight Back. Not seeing the second one in the DB when I checked. | lols
04.17.24 | need more noisecore in your life bro | lols

04.18.24 | Been going through this and I don’t grind like you check insect warfare | cylinder
04.18.24 | they're on the list man | anode
04.18.24 | Ok tannhauser gate is pretty good | cylinder
04.18.24 | Yeah that shit fuckin rips | Uzumaki
04.18.24 | Try Rot (BRA) - Organic | AsleepInTheBack
04.19.24 | fair take on 54 if you're not into the thrash/death flavoured grind thing as much as the noise/skramz oriented lane. though i find alot of parallels between that album and Voices era wormrot, so interesting to see you not take to it. | Demon of the Fall
04.19.24 | I like some Wormrot, cool. Not familiar with the majority of these tbh
Best shit in this realm for me is Human Remains, Knoll, some Full of Hell etc. I haven’t really dug that deep yet
I love His Hero Is Gone’s Monuments to Thieves but that’s more crust / d-beat, I do see some strong parallels though | cylinder
04.19.24 | yeah that His Hero is Gone album is sweet
i think i've heard that last Human Remains album but it's been years | ShadowRemains
04.19.24 | 13 and 34 are the best of their respective genres
not sure if you're looking for more death/grind, but repulsion (horrified) and terrorizer (world downfall) are a couple of absolute essentials | cylinder
04.22.24 | "need more noisecore in your life bro"
you're right, i do. will def give those a peep |
