Bon Iver Ranked
1Bon Iver
22, A Million

Fragmented and messy in the best way possible. It's a curation, not so much a creation, of sounds being innovated in the indie scene and puts them into a maximalist, fascinating package. Justin Vernon's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. 10/10.
2Bon Iver
For Emma, Forever Ago

The polar opposite of 22, A Million, yet no less brilliant. A guy with a falsetto voice going and isolating himself in a cabin with a guitar because he's sad about a girl sounds like the type of guy I'd love to see get a wedgie, but Justin Vernon avoids cliches and pretension at every turn. A seamless masterpiece. 10/10.

Bon Iver, Bon Iver

Often lives up to the lush soundscapes the album cover promises and is far from a disappointment following FEFA. A few average tracks don't stop this from being an inspired and gorgeous release. 8/10.
4Bon Iver
Blood Bank

A sweet little EP that bridges that hints at Vernon's musical progression for the following 10 years. Bookended by two career highlights, with a couple solid songs in between. 8/10.

This is to me what 22, A Million was to people who didn't like it. Here, the big ideas and fragmented nature work against it and most of it feels half-baked. Sh'Diah is the first time I've found Justin's voice grating and there is next to no connective tissue between songs. There's definitely stuff to uncover here with repeated listens, but unlike with 22, a Million, the songs are so fucking boring that I don't have the patience to reach that point. A handful of re-listenable tracks here and there but this was a huge disappointment for me. 5, 6/10 on a generous day.
