Still some brilliant episodes every series though, no doubt

Sharenge 07.29.22	if I can only name two, The Sopranos and Deadwood take it with ease True Detective is good too - if you're unaware, it is an anthology series so every season is its own standalone story which I guess is the same thing shows like Fargo and American Horror Story do however, I have what would be considered by the vast majority of people to be a 'contrarian opinion' when it comes to True Detective in that I find the first season to be, while still great, quite overrated and I very much prefer the 2nd season as my favorite of the three that have been released thus far... unfortunately the 2nd season is almost unanimously regarded as the worst season, and it's not even that people feel it wasn't as good as the first.... typically it just gets totally shit on =(

Mort. 07.29.22	peep show is easily one of the greatest comedies of all time. nearly every episode is intensely quotable, witty and awkward. the fact that it doesnt follow the awful sitcom tropes of everything working out well in the end also makes it sort of brilliant. its two men who are both at fault in their own ways stuck in a purgatory of their own making, carrying out the same mistakes over and over and barely learning. the 1st season is dated and quite low budget so i can see that putting people off. but its still funny as fuck so who cares.

Deez 07.30.22	Mate that final season of Mr Robot is as good as any every. It turned a show I really liked into a show I absolutely love. Think ive seen it 3 times now probably due another. Agree on the soundtrack too. Have loads of friends who started it but gave up like 3rd season, everyone I've pushed to finish it felt the same.
DoofDoof 07.30.22	I did stop watching Mr Robot season 2 recently - every scene was a dream and then he’d puke in a sink, I’d probably have persevered but I watch most stuff with my wife and she just pulled the plug Might watch the rest myself but I thought the Fight Club homage at the end of season 1 was also a bit laboured, dunno, came over lazy rather than clever to me Didn’t seem a classic on the evidence presented in a season and a half but it could get there I guess, half of the first season was solid

EvoHavok 07.30.22	I've recently finished Deadwood and I definitely recommend it. Other suggestions would be True Detective, Rome, Criminal: UK, Maniac, Good Omens. One of the showrunners for the first season of American Gods worked on Hannibal, so you may like that too, although the full series ended up shaky after going through plenty of trouble and drama behind the scenes.

IsisScript80 08.21.22	^ So far, I've seen the first 7 episodes of 'The Sandman', and I too am a massive fan of the comic (absolutely right in calling it a masterpiece). The series so far IMO, veers wildly from cringey, sub-par 'BBC 'Dr. Who' (which TBH, it feels like most of the time) to something approaching great. It's adapting something fantastic, and when it works it's effective because it has such a rich well to draw from. It's interesting because I'm concurrently watching HBO's mid-2010s 'The Leftovers' for the first time, and thus far (mid-point in Season 2) is phenomenal. The treatment in adaptation, be it pacing, direction and having actors actually seem to BELIEVE in the words they're saying is paramount. I find the majority of this somewhat lacking in 'The Sandman' most of the time, which is unfortunate because with the right treatment it could have been incredible opposed to 'sometimes very good'.

DoofDoof 08.23.22	Gyro, glad you liked 'Succession' that much. 'Sandman' I'm not blown away by so far, but then I wasn't too amazed by 'American Gods' either (I abandoned that end of Season 2). I'll stick with 'Sandman' but something's not quite on point - I mean there isn't even a lead actor as engaging as Ian McShane which doesn't help. West World season 4 was an improvement but some of the plot points seemed ridiculously contrived even by that show's standards. The main objective for the writers I think was allowing the final season to be a victory lap/'return to the beginning' and they've manufactured that 100% going by the set up at the end of this season's last episode. Ed Harris was on great form this season anyway. Saul ended well, last four episodes actually did the perfect job in retrospect. First episode of 'House of the Dragon' was decent, 'Return to King's Landing' basically. Going to be a backstab fest.
fogza 08.23.22	Justified is good and Midnight Mass is essential. A few also mentioned Twin Peaks, the return is the best thing I've ever seen on TV. Maniac was pretty good, suprised at the reaction to Mr Robot season 2, easily the best season. Barry is good but the ending to season 1 felt so tragic I haven't picked up season 2. Got to also pick up Orphan Black, massively underrated.

It's really a shame, no one has mentioned Lost yet, and yeah, I know it has its flaws, but damn what is done right makes me forgot all of it, just go with the flow of the story and let yourself be immersed in it, and there's a fair chance you will have a great time. Shootout to the guy that recd Freaks & Geeks, it's truly a lovely series, the show My Once Called Life is excellent too. Mad Men is amazing, it took me awhile to get into it too though, but it's worth it, Elizabeth Moss is the MVP. Speaking of Moss, The first three seasons of Handmaid's Tale was pretty dope, but I stopped watching it and never came back somehow. Another amazing Drama show that I haven't seen mentioned is Rectify, really really good.

IsisScript80 08.23.22	^ It's on shaky ground to start with... they fundamentally ballsed-up the mainline show from around Season 5 onwards--and especially when they had to fanfic a conclusion when they ran out of books to draw from. Spin-offs, prequels, sequels, etc. etc., are in the vast majority of cases, cash-grabs relying on dopey name/brand recognition. So in this case, it'd have to go some (i.e. be better than the show it's based on, which is rare).

Gyromania 08.24.22	Maybe I'm just a basic bitch, because I thought the first ep of House of the Dragon was solid. It wasn't a masterpiece, but it did what it set out to perfectly fine. It introduced some noteworthy characters (Daemon seems promising and Matt Smith was a great casting choice) and set up the conflict of succession. It was nice to see the capital again and how it differs from the one in GoT, being set over a century in the past. Looking forward to hopefully seeing some more iconic locations and how they've changed too. Idk, I'm cautiously optimistic about this series. I think it's doomed to have lower ratings though, if only for the fact that it will be examined with great scrutiny by those embittered by what GoT became

Some of the episodes they absolutely nailed too, like the house hanging on the cliffside. The whole atmosphere of that one was just perfect. and yeah NPH killed that role

The first two seasons are monumentally influential for a lot of cable TV, and season 3 (The Return) is Lynch's magnum opus

It's a slowburn so you have to bear with it for the first couple of episodes but the amount of times I was blown away by revelations and intricacies made it my favorite show of all time, up there with peak GoT and Breaking Bad. "I loved Dark but it gets too complicated" It is complicated, but that's why https://dark.netflix.io/en exists. It honestly helps a ton and you can set up at which ep you are and get a complete overview of what's going on and who's who.

Gyromania 08.26.22	What's so good about it? It seems to follow the same exact formula as other Netflix horror shows, with the added detriment of endlessly dull monologues. It focuses more on drama than horror and is so slowly paced. I only saw 4 or 5 episodes but nothing about it was remotely scary

It had really good creepy vibes and tension in the first episode or so and I thought it was a return to Hill House quality writing but then after a couple of reveals it was just a bit boring. Great to see praise for A Series Of Unfortunate Events, loved that!
Gyromania 08.26.22	I had the same reaction to Midnight Mass, Shemson. Thought the first ep set it up decently but then nothing ends up happening for another 4 or so hours. I had a similar issue with Hill House (but I like that way more) where I think it had some great things going for it but it just gets so boring and all the tension and fear is annihilated in the second half. Honestly think the director is super weak, but his strengths are amazing sets and cinematography
Shemson 08.26.22	I really like the writer/director Mike Flanagan myself. I first saw him take a pointless horror sequel Ouija 2 and turned it into a brilliant movie so always looked out for him then he got Hill House and for me that was the best ever horror tv series, it did peak midway but I enjoyed the whole thing. Bly Manor was a good gothic horror that suffered from never hitting the heights of Hill House but MM was a big let down.

fogza 08.26.22	"What's so good about it?" I don't really want to go into spoiler material but I thought the character motivation was actually fairly original. The acting is top notch from most of the cast, and the dual commentary on religion and addiction was excellent. It's more of a tragedy than a straight horror and if one sees it as that you might enjoy it more, although there are some memorable, frightening scenes.

WatchItExplode 08.26.22	Sandman was super lame until episode 4 or 5 and then it blew me away. Peacemaker was actually a riot and I expected to hate it. Reservation dogs never gets mentioned but it's one of the more interesting and unique comedies there right now. The rehearsal is like a comedic inception... I was smelling burnt toast back half of the series. Severance is the best thing I've seen in the last year.
Gyromania 08.26.22	High five! Severance club all the way. That show only has one season out but I feel like it's already peaked. Probably an actual 10/10. I'm yet to see Sandman but that's an interesting take. So the latter half is just way better? I only saw one scene prior to the show's release, introducing death and I feel like the nailed it but I know a lot of people were unhappy about the casting.

WatchItExplode 08.27.22	I actually hate marvel and DC stuff. But I might be a fan of James Gunn. Cena was the perfect meathead for this role. And you had the first few episodes of sandman. We're setting up the universe or whatever and were very boring honestly. Then there's a whole episode set in a diner and it just blows everything up for the hell of it. And you realize the show is not going to be anything like how it initially presented
Shemson 08.28.22	Yeah Gyro, Flanagan made Dr Sleep too, when it comes to building tension and interesting visuals he’s an outstanding director imo To me Sandman was like 6/10 first episodes then the middle two were 9/10 some of the best stories I’ve seen this year but I thought the final episodes were rubbish! The vortex storyline was weak and dragged and the only saving grace was the stuff around the Corinthian and his fellow breakfast enthusiasts. The surprise final episode was cool though.
DoofDoof 08.28.22	What I will say about Midnight Mass (before I watch the final ep) is that if Hamish Linklater's performance hadn't been as good/the role was taken by someone else the whole thing might have fallen flat. His performance is one of my favourites in ages, absolutely perfect.

I think I prefer mystery and not knowing why mysterious things are happening and being eased into it rather than MM which after a couple episodes was like ‘boom - this is an X story and there’s the X’

Egarran 09.06.22	HotD is not quite GoT quality but it's good enough. But I thought that Daemon action scene in ep.3 was kinda lame. He went through many bad tropes during that assault. Can't be hit by arrows, enemies attack him one at a time, he's backed up by an ex machina dragon - all in jump cuts. I don't understand how this is still a thing. It's ok in 70's karate movies but not anymore, guys.
