Build-an-Album II, R2(P1): Believe in Patterns

After a slight delay, we move onwards! Who scored the highest, and who walked away with goose eggs? Let's dive into the breakdown of beakbeat...
1The Prodigy
The Fat of the Land

Last time on Build-an-Album: the genre was BREAKS/BREAKBEAT, the theme was SATURDAY NIGHT VIBES, and competitors were required to make 10-track records. The “dumb rule” prevent anyone from using an artist or band based in the United States, which apparently meant everyone raided the U.K. for assistance. This was a round that already tested genre knowledge and enforced some touch restrictions. How did everyone fare? Let’s check in and see…
2Venetian Snares
Rossz Csillag Allat Szuletett

bg's album: As you'll see throughout, I tried to judge these not necessarily on my personal biases alone, but also if the album could be danced to or not. Bg's record nailed the mark for the most part, providing a series of tunes that were varied and provided plenty of energy for a club. You need those vibes to keep people moving and dancing. Although dipping in quality at times, this possessed a lot of fun highlights that kept me engaged and tapping my feet. Nailed the prompt! 4.0
3Special Request
Belief System

Mort's album: A big issue with this record is that tracks either contained little zest to them or failed to do much of interest. If the intent was for these more to be background music, then I understand the intent, but a lot of these cuts just didn't prompt much movement. Some seemed far too minimalistic or calm for a night out, as far as I'm concerned. Not bad, but also not really on par. 3.4
4Dream Dolphin
The Seventh Dream

Johnny's album: Whatever club you dreamt up, I want in. This was absolute rave insanity and I loved every moment of this. The creativity, the bass lines, the balance between chaos and melody... this was perfect. I can picture ANYONE getting down to this at a bustling city party. And they all fit together so well. 4.5
5Apollo 440
Gettin' High On Your Own Supply

Slothcore's album: A common complaint I had, as was the case with other records, was that this needed more to it. If it was supposed to just blend into the noise of a party and not do too much, then that's fine, but it doesn't really catch my interest. Repetition also hurt this a lot, with certain tracks taking a beat and beating it into the ground. Again, not bad, but also below what I'd be hoping for. 3.55
6bye2
霊体ミミズ (GHOST_WORM)

Steak's album: Although faltering slightly in its second half, Steak's disc managed to not only maintain a good energy level at the start, but consistently build upon it in every track. It was a very enjoyable experience, especially with the general aesthetic of the collected tunes; they all felt like they were based on a video game and gave the album more of a retro atmosphere. It was a neat choice, and one that no one else really replicated. 4.1
7Hybrid (UK)
Wide Angle

David's album: The variety here was a ton of fun! There were parts of this that were either too glitchy or too hazy to ever fit a proper night out setting, but what surrounded it was aces. Most of the tracks did a fine job at executing transitions and adding on more intrigue as they progressed, including the large closing track. This kept me engaged and kept me dancing. Can't ask for too much more. 4.05
8Pendulum
In Silico

Shemson's album: I'm gonna repeat this throughout (did I already mention that? Oh dear...), but this was *gasp* inconsistent. There were vocal samples that seemed unnecessary, as well as points where tracks tried to mix in adjacent pop elements to mixed results. I was impressed by many tracks here though, and I found that there was a healthy supply of bangers here. Well played for the most part. 3.8
9Meat Beat Manifesto
99%

Pangea's album: This was... good! I wish I had more to say, but it was really just solid as a whole. The quality definitely dipped at certain key points, which inevitably held the final score back. Even an appearance by the famous Punks of Daft could not offer assistance. It really was the inconsistency that hurt this, since I genuinely enjoyed quite a few cuts off of this. Close, but no cigar. 3.5
10The Chemical Brothers
Dig Your Own Hole

Rock's album: At one point, Rock dipped dangerously into electronic music far too glitchy and chaotic to appreciate at a club. However, despite that step over the edge, the album before and after was entertaining. Much like Pangea's record and others, I can't say it was bad on the whole, nor can I say it really wowed me. It just never really hit its groove like it might have if it focused itself more. A generally good effort, however! 3.77
11Propellerheads
Decksandrumsandrockandroll

Uzu's album: I think I've learned throughout this exercise that I prefer my breakbeat without vocals, if I have a choice. They CAN be good, but far too often do I feel like they're intrusive and unnecessary. The real issue here though, was that the tracks failed to evolve; they found their beat and they mostly stuck to it. I wish there was more going on there, as it left me wanting more. The tone was on point, but it needed more to impress me. 3.65
12Kaizo Slumber
The Kaizo Manifesto

tyman's album: The middle of this record fell into a deep abyss, but the front and back of it contained some great hits, which helped to salvage the experience. I've learned that The Prodigy are very cool throughout this whole experience... what a fantastic opening song! Good energy throughout, but that pestering flaw of inconsistency strikes another record, albeit not fatally. 3.76
132 Bad Mice
4 Bad Remixes

Storm's album: This relied far too much on vocal samples that didn't do much of anything for me. In fact, for some tracks, it hindered my enjoyment. Others either came across as boring or oddly out of place for the intended breakbeat category. I'm no expert, but this was a bit too uneven of an experience, both due to its poor use of its tools and the annoying repetition used in specific songs. Ehhh... 3.2
14Amon Tobin
Permutation

Phero's album: This had potential in its aesthetic, but the beats just didn't BOP enough. This was supposed to be more for a night out dancing and such, and these beats just didn't speak loudly enough at times. Either because of being underdeveloped or too relaxed/stripped back, these tracks never reached grander heights. I also think the Amon Tobin tracks, while enjoyable to me, became a touch too schizophrenic to be accurately danced to. Great moments and songs, but could've been more overall. 3.7
15D'Cruze
Control

Sint's album: I appreciated what was attempted here: a more relaxed, intimate experience. However, I was really more in the mood/looking for something a la Track 4 and the energy it brought. Too many of these were just lacking in their staying power to where I felt bored at the club. You can't be getting bored at the club, yo. C'mon son. Like I said though, the relaxed demeanor of some of these was rather charming, and this wasn't too bad. It was just kinda solid. 3.6
16Nothing
The Great Dismal

Slex submitted nothing... :^(
17The Prodigy
The Fat of the Land

Very few of these were bad. Congratulations! You've successfully made it through one week of this super prestigious competition. As you know, nobody is going home yet, and your goal is score as many points as possible to avoid elimination. Who was able to snag the most?
FIRST PLACE: Johnny (4.5)
SECOND PLACE: Steak (4.1)
THIRD PLACE: David (4.05)
Some close calls were made due to the bloated middle this round created. So many of these records hovered around the same score, and I had to get petty/flip a coin to determine the fates of each. Read on an you'll see the current point breakdown on our fancy new LEADERBOARD!

20Macho Man Randy Savage
Be A Man

And thus, we have concluded our first round! Nobody is eliminated… no, not yet. The torture must endure, my friends. Such is the ultimate goal of the genre wheel: to claim the souls of all that encounter it. That’s a painful experience, innit? Having your happiness wiped away, creating a perpetual rain cloud over your head, invading every part of your existence. Did I get carried away, or is the next genre dramatic enough to cause such potential reactions?
21I Would Set Myself On Fire For You
Believes In Patterns

Welcome one and all to the land of EMO. What luck that is! We travel from one rather vast category to one equally as malleable, especially at its boundaries. This will require some care in order to stay reasonably within the category—I’m much more in-tune with this genre than I am with breakbeat. Retrieve those teenage-years diaries, cue the tears, and get sad!
22Macho Man Randy Savage
Be A Man

I’ll give you the requirement first, since it will be tied into the theme. For this go-around, you are required to supply 8 tracks. You’re also going to have to contend with a duration ceiling: the record cannot clock in at or over 40 minutes. Get at least one second below that mark, you’re golden! Get exactly 40 or one second above? Start prayin’.

The theme is set to Hidden Gems. Emo is a classification replete with one-and-done bands or groups that otherwise failed to gather a significant following. When selecting your eight tracks, at least half must be from records that have 25 or fewer votes on Sputnik. Get obscure with it!
23Macho Man Randy Savage
Be A Man

Quite a high bar for this round! That’s the sort of stuff that can really drag proceedings down. A recent survey I conducted with myself and a random man on the street[1] demonstrated that superfluous restrictions normalize depressive symptoms consequential to diminishing serotonin surpluses. So what we need are puns! Using data from a recent experiment in which I raided a local hospital[2], I’ve found that a good joke can erase the oncoming presence of death itself. When you submit your album, you must provide a pun with it! How, you ask? It’s up to interpretation. Give it your best shot.
24Macho Man Randy Savage
Be A Man

SUMMARY:
Genre = Emo
Theme = Hidden Gems
Requirement = 8 tracks; must be shorter than 40 minutes
“dumb rule”: provide a pun when you submit
