07.01.22 | I never finished what I started. Now, I'm going to do just that. Clean slate, full ride to the finish, no breaks or stops. This is gonna be for 100% real and I'm excited to bring this series back.
What else can you expect? The genre wheel will be expanded to include additional genres so as to cover up for vacancies in the Sput database. You can suggest a few you think would work well to help me out!
People who competed before are welcome in!
We are DOING THIS for realsies. |
SteakByrnes
07.01.22 | let's fucking go I'm in |
MarsKid
07.01.22 | Welcome to the madness
And like I said, if y'all have good ideas for extra genres for the wheel, let me know. |
MarsKid
07.01.22 | ALSO, the Player's Choice and Host Choice categories will be returning, as well as a potential third category designed to upset anyone involved (except me). |
DavidYowi
07.01.22 | I probably won’t be able to finish it but fuck it I’m down |
Cimnele
07.01.22 | i will join
if the categories call for live instrumentation prepare to hear midi instrumentation instead lol |
MarsKid
07.01.22 | @David it generally takes quite a few weeks, with usually a few days to a week offered in order to make albums and for me to listen to them. Even then, I'm usually pretty lenient on deadlines, and I understand real life responsibilities get in the way. I get a *bit* more strict as the game goes on, but especially in the early stages, I'm relatively forgiving I'd say.
@Cimnele I only want videos of brutal death conga lines |
0xME
07.01.22 | I'm not able to join due to very little free time, but I'm looking forward to see what the competitors have to deal with this time |
MarsKid
07.01.22 | I've had some ideas of how to torture/entertain... |
JohnnyoftheWell
07.01.22 | o shi, okay
petition to directly revive this from last time so that our unadjudicated grime round can be done justice |
MarsKid
07.01.22 | I think I'm shooting for a clean slate here. But I will say that all previously used genres will be chucked back into the wheel.
And as I've said, I'm definitely up for suggestions to add to the wheel since I know Sput doesn't cover all the bases. |
Sinternet
07.01.22 | im back too finally claim the crown |
JohnnyoftheWell
07.01.22 | omg cimnele is doing this let's make this a battle of the pleb filters lessgo |
Sinternet
07.01.22 | i was gonna say if you have the time/patience (no pressure) it could be cool to maybe have the first three rounds as everyone and then eliminate people based on an average of scores before the regular format, so maybe do 3 rounds which people have an average score and eliminate the bottom 4 for a last 8 or something |
MarsKid
07.01.22 | I'm back at a job that allows me to listen to music, so I'm a bit more available. I disappeared for a while this year because my prior job banned music because... reasons? It was a toxic environment and I thankfully got out of it. My current boss is a massive Converge fan lol
As for your suggestion, I was actually planning on doing more with points in some way, but I like what you're thinking better than what I was thinking! |
Storm In A Teacup
07.01.22 | In. |

07.01.22 | Welcome to the party my dude |
Storm In A Teacup
07.01.22 | 🎆✨ thanks Mars, good to be here |
MarsKid
07.01.22 | If y'all know anyone who might be interested, spread the word! It filled up super fast last time.
Still looking for extra genre suggestions as well. |
MarsKid
07.01.22 | Spoiler alert: one of the possible random genres is deathcore lmao
Maximum pain. |

MarsKid
07.01.22 | If any of y'all want to see other stuff on the wheel, like I said, feel free to toss out suggestions. |
SlothcoreSam
07.01.22 | Yo, I'm in, and am happy going in blind, no idea what's on the wheel. |
MarsKid
07.01.22 | The wheel traditionally includes the genres that Sput contains (for the sake of simplicity), but I'm making amendments to it this go around in order to accommodate for other styles that aren't as represented. |
Sinternet
07.01.22 | Trap could be one, maybe Screamo? |
MarsKid
07.01.22 | TBH I was hoping you'd supply some more electronic. I feel like 'Electronic' is almost too vague to include, unless everyone else is cool with it.
Screamo is on the board for sure. |
JohnnyoftheWell
07.01.22 | I think include all the genres confirmed to be added to the site for sure. Electronic is fine in the same sense as other blankets (Metal, Rock, Pop etc) are, as long as the generality is recognised
Psybient, footwork, breakcore, glitch, shibuya kei, indietronica, EDM, digital hardcore are all viables though
and also klezmer
and onkyo YES |
MarsKid
07.01.22 | Can you link me that? I wanted to find those new tags but I forget what they were. |
JohnnyoftheWell
07.01.22 | Yaw https://www.sputnikmusic.com/blog/2022/03/10/new-hires-genre-tags-and-site-updates/ |

Shemson
07.02.22 | Dammit |
MarsKid
07.02.22 | lol first genre already has me hitting Wikipedia up to research. Make of that what you will. |
Uzumaki
07.02.22 | Should have Marsboi go through visual kei/Jrock |
Shemson
07.02.22 | So I just missed out on entering but I’m curious how this works?
Each contestant makes one song per genre selected over the course of x weeks? |
MarsKid
07.02.22 | They construct albums by compiling songs from the chosen genre. Each round contains its own genre, which is picked by random, a theme, a requirement, and a 'dumb rule'.
The genre determines what category of music you operate in. Any songs/artists you choose have to fly under that banner to a reasonable enough extent. More vague genres (i.e. jazz fusion) have more leeway than others.
Themes inform you about what your album should do/convey. For example, if the genre was post rock, I may set the theme to be 'Blissful,' where your record should give that sort of sensation.
Requirements are things you MUST do, or you will lose points or just outwardly get nothing. They are usually length related.
"Dumb rules" are inconvenient requirements meant to make the challenge a bit more difficult.
Rounds usually take a week, during which every involved contestant attempts to make the best record using songs from the genre while abiding by the rules. At the end of the week, I listen to each album. I judge based off of what the round asked for, my personal taste, how well the album flows, etc etc. Then I reveal the ratings and genre for next week. Whoever received the lowest rating is eliminated.
If you get far enough in the game, two "point of no returns" are eventually included, once again to make the competition a bit harder. |
MarsKid
07.02.22 | If this goes well, I intend to keep it going as an annual/biannual sort of thing, and maybe other people can host as well in the future.
I will say that this particular round will be a bit different. Points are going to mean more than before, and people may be more involved than previously as well. Should be interesting! |
Shemson
07.02.22 | Ohhhh I totally misunderstood!
I thought this was contestants making their own music to fit the given theme!
That would be pretty cool but huge commitment |
MarsKid
07.02.22 | That would be a great idea! But that sort of competition would likely call for a much greater time commitment, and considering the variety of genres that can appear, it'd be potentially unfair. |
Uzumaki
07.02.22 | @Shemson, if you want examples, skim Mars’ lists, as we did this once before. Absolutely fun time with it even if I flamed out terribly in a genre I thought I knew decently. |
Storm In A Teacup
07.02.22 | Holy shit now i want to spin the genre wheel and randomly select genres of music to make. |
MarsKid
07.02.22 | I will say that this particular genre isn't necessarily an obscure one, but one outside of my own wheelhouse. So I gotta study so I can judge best as I can and make an appropriate theme. |
Mort.
07.02.22 | lol this looks pretty entertaining |
Storm In A Teacup
07.02.22 | It's a blast. |
Storm In A Teacup
07.02.22 | Chicken past. |
Mort.
07.02.22 | oh lol i misunderstood this as well, thought you were asking people to make shitty albums of their own music really quickly |
MarsKid
07.02.22 | Ideally, if I can wrap this up properly this time (and I 100% plan to), this'll be a reoccurring series that I can host or we can alternate hosts. So there should be plenty of opportunities for new people to jump in on the action. |
Mort.
07.02.22 | yes pls cos i would like to join in next time its possible |
MarsKid
07.03.22 | If we can keep this on a consistent each-week-is-a-round schedule, this can be over in roughly 3 months and some change. Some of the deadlines I used before were shorter, and I think it might be easier to have forgiving deadlines at the get-go and allow for people to schedule around it properly. |
bgillesp
07.03.22 | Yeah I’ve got 2nd year of med school starting next week so I’ll give round 1 my all and then secretly hope to be eliminated so I don’t get distracted, lol. Even if I don’t, I’ll find time at some point each week. I’m just joking around because I am full of anticipation for the workload I’ll have |
bgillesp
07.03.22 | Also just remembered I made it into top 3 for the original iteration so I may accidentally do well if I still have the right skills, lol |
MarsKid
07.03.22 | You never know! If you're worried about time commitment to that extent, you can always sub out and have someone else take over. It's meant to be fun, but with more reliable deadlines this go around.
I'd love to have you play, especially since you did so well before! But real life is always a priority. Up to you my man. |
rockarollacola
07.03.22 | So is Monday the due date for the first album submission, or is it when we will get the details for the first album we have to create? |
Slex
07.03.22 | Pretty sure the 2nd |
MarsKid
07.03.22 | Details will go up on Monday! Possibly Sunday night so I don't forget in the morning. You'll then have Monday through Friday to make the album, Saturday/Sunday I start listening and judging, then results are out around that time. You can still submit on Saturday/Sunday but that's generally when I start finalizing the round.
Deadlines tend to be flexible, especially early on, but adherence to them helps to keep the game moving and prevent delays. |
MarsKid
07.03.22 | Details likely going up later today so we can get a head start. I have work off tomorrow as well due to holiday, so I'll be around for any immediate questions. |
Uzumaki
07.03.22 | Let’s fucking go |
SlothcoreSam
07.03.22 | Oh... I'm ready, slow day at work, bring it on. |
MarsKid
07.03.22 | Slow day? Then get to work...
