| Mazzy Star Top 10 I guess
Honestly, Mazzy's worst song from their 4 albums ("I've Gotta Stop") is still like a 3.5/5, so the band is legendary. Here's the best of the best okay? | | 10 | | Mazzy Star She Hangs Brightly
"Give You My Lovin"
I love when songs paint vivid pictures in the mind and this one is like a full movie. A pastoral romance between a bad boy and a naive but hopeful and honorable woman. Maybe she sees something in him the rest of her conservative town doesn't. Where would this take place? Maybe Indiana?
They're all 5/5s so I won't write this again haha. | | 9 | | Mazzy Star Seasons of Your Day
"California"
I feel bad this is is the only Seasons of Your Day song to make the list because the album is quite a good comeback. The outro is super cool. Shout out to "Flying Low" which is probably #11. | | 8 | | Mazzy Star So Tonight That I Might See
"Fade into You"
The hit single and for a good reason. I mean sure there are better ones, but if you love this song to death you won't be disappointed in the rest of their work. Country guitar, dreamy everything else... | | 7 | | Mazzy Star Among My Swan
"Still Cold"
One of those rare Mazzy songs where percussion is the biggest highlight. Relaxing, but also commanding. | | 6 | | Mazzy Star Among My Swan
"Disappear"
Mazzy is so damn good at intro songs. Fuzzy, sparkly, moody, dreamy... Mazzy. | | 5 | | Mazzy Star So Tonight That I Might See
"Mary of Silence"
Mazzy albums always have that one "creepy" song. She Hangs Brightly's t/t, "Umbilical", and ... well I guess Seasons doesn't have one (how dare they leave out this tradition!) Okay, but with that said "Mary of Silence is the best of those 3. It's so slow and distorted like a different band took over for a second. | | 4 | | Mazzy Star Among My Swan
"I've Been Let Down"
Sad comfort indie acoustic shit, but done perfectly. | | 3 | | Mazzy Star So Tonight That I Might See
"Blue Light"
Hope Sandoval often sounds a little drunk when she sings, or hopeful and innocent. Or all 3. Here she's coming down from a long Saturday night out at 4am... or at least that's the vibe. The city is dark but there's a blue light lighting her way. Mood music. | | 2 | | Mazzy Star She Hangs Brightly
"I'm Sailin'"
I don't care what you say. This is like actually perfect. It's just off-kilter enough to immediately catch my ear, The blues is simple and basic, but woosy enough where it sort of feels like a hangover. Have you ever listened to a hangover in song form? It's good. | | 1 | | Mazzy Star She Hangs Brightly
"Halah"
Maybe the greatest intro a dream pop album ever. Gloomy, catchy, folky, pretty. Should I 5 She Hangs Brightly? | |

04.23.22 | I love “Fade Into You” to death and am disappointed by the rest of their catalogue. | ArsMoriendi
04.23.22 | @boney: that's sad to hear
or read? I can't hear you through Sputnik | JohnnyoftheWell
04.23.22 | take
everything
i do like all these picks though, especially 1 and 3 gj gj | theBoneyKing
04.24.22 | I’m overgeneralizing of course, they do have a handful of other great songs (all these picks are solid from what I remember) and all their albums are “good” technically (She Hangs Brightly is “great” I guess since I have it at a 3.5), but I have very tepid feelings to them overall, particularly compared to how I feel like I should feel about them. With some exceptions they’re very average songwriters that get by on vague melancholic vibes, decent tones, and Sandoval’s (admittedly very pretty) vocals (despite her weak singing) and the occasional great melody. I also find them one of the most frustratingly mis-categorized bands ever. Dream pop? Neo-psych? Are you kidding me? Sure, a handful of their songs fall in those categories but they’re absolutely a folk rock/alt-country/roots band at heart; they have far more in common with Cowboy Junkies than Cocteau Twins.
But whatever, I’ve said this all before and I don’t really dislike them so don’t want to rain on anybody’s parade; I’m glad they have their fans, I’m more just perplexed that I’m not one of them. | ArsMoriendi
04.24.22 | Dang
Are Cowboy Junkies good or | Ryus
04.24.22 | i like 1 and fade into you but god damn do i get bored by a whole album of mazzy star | GhandhiLion
04.24.22 | Yeah kinda overrated but influential core. They grew on me recently but Opal and The Rain Parade were still better. | GhandhiLion
04.24.22 | Cowboy Junkies are very good yeah | theBoneyKing
04.25.22 | Junkies are great yeah, more directly trad folk/blues/country inspired than Mazzy but they were undoubtedly a big influence on Sandoval and co, especially on She Hangs Brightly. | JohnnyoftheWell
04.25.22 | listening to a whole Mazzy Star album is, um, a decision and investment yes, but also if you're gonna listen to a whole Mazzy Star album you kinda need that level of chill that transcends handwringing about songwriting and poohpoohing simplistic zany nothingsongs
i mean jfc there's a reason budgie likes this band | ArsMoriendi
04.25.22 | I find Mazzy Star albums to be incredibly easy and pleasurable to get through honestly
They hit that same niche Yo La Tengo, Jerry Paper and Deerhunter do of soothing |
