Pink Floyd - Welcome to the machine (toss up between this and Have a cigar)
Sounds like a guy dressed in foil with long blonde hair singing in a cloud of dry ice smoke, but not ironically. More boring whining from the most insipid major rock and roll "frontman", and the song goes nowhere except into a pool of awful synth, do people actually like that sound?

04.02.22 | 2. ISIS - Jesus Johnny, another 9+ minute song. This is supposed to be one that you hate but we LOVE. OK. Melodic enough intro. I can already see why Johnny hates it. Now the guy started singing, and they've already changed their time sig a bit. Now we've got some "Rah-Rah!" vocals. Why are we supposed to love this again? Some fairly dramatic electric guitar. But now the rah-rah guy is back. I can feel the precious few moments left in my life wasting away. Now we've shifted into a different section. This is more of a suite than a song. We're at the 6 and a half minute mark, so maybe I'll make it. Did I tell you guys I saw Colin Hay last night? Now there's a musician. Funny, talented, melodic. Johnny would really hate him, although he is a fellow Scotsman. It was a pretty quiet show, but entertaining. Ah, Johnny's song just ended. 2.3 |

04.03.22 | 1. For Reverend Green - animal collective have the ability to be both kinda weird and to be completely uninteresting. This was more interesting as the other i heard though, but maybe that was only because of the random manic screaming. 2.0
2. Garden Of Light - I have never listened to ISIS before, but they have been on my list for a while. Maybe after my boris run, although that will take a little while. Eh i will find some time in between, i do love some good post metal. Hopefully this song is a good introduction, i do really like it. Very good dynamics. 4.0

04.03.22 | "Garden of Light"
Am I listening to Tool haha this guitar intro? Okay, the vocal style isn't very Tool. Oh no, growling! Growling and riffing. Nope, I hate this. Even the clean vocals suck haha. This isn't the worst metal song I've heard when it's instrumental at least.
2.7/5

Gross vocals, nice acoustic part. The vocals got better maybe? Only a little though. This is nothing special, but it's closer to harmless and bland than it is outright bad.

3. Hollowing - cheesy. 2.7
4. Frownland - every time I listen to this record I'm like "this is shit" but also I do realize my head bops at some moments. Weird. This one didn't make my head bop that much. 3.0 |

04.04.22 | 4. Frownland - i have always wondered how i feel about this album, definitely will check it in full at some point. I do like this, i like the power in the vocals. 3.5 |
Divaman
04.04.22 | 4. Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band - Frantic guitar and raspy vocals. It's under 2 minutes and that's a good thing. The guitar doesn't really go with the vocal. Pretty horrible. 1.8 |
ArsMoriendi
04.04.22 | "Frownland"
I remember first renting Trout Mask Replica from the Library when I was about 16 having only really known "Muffin Man" from Beefheart (which is just a normal Zappa rock song with him on vocals, really,) and being LIKE WHAT THE HELL IS THIS once "Frownland" started. I found it hilarious at first, but as the album went on, I loved many of the tracks from the getgo. This song is so off, yet catchy, yet constantly engaging. Even its dissenters have to admit that it reshaped the way they thought about music, even if just by a smidge. The post-punk and art-rock scenes were both very heavily influenced by Beefheart, and if you're surprised, lemme tell you, it's obvious to me why. David Lynch and Matt Groening both love this album, why don't you?

I liked Conor for two minutes when I was young, and then the scales fell from my eyes. His template for melodramatic, histrionic schtick has ruined many an easily influenced singer. Bridgers is possibly the most overhyped artist in the indie scene over the last few years, like annoyingly so. Song is weak. 2.2 |

fogza
04.07.22 | 7. Coheed and Cambria: In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 - I heard these guys were prog emo sci Fi so I never bothered listening to them. Going in cold, it sounds like if Fallout Boy wrote a soundtrack for a sci Fi telenovela (except FB would probably write a better chorus). The only thing worse than a band going through the motions to make some money off say, contributing to a Joel Schumacher soundtrack, is a band passionately drawing inspiration from their own space opera graphic novel. 1.3 |
JohnnyoftheWell
04.07.22 | 3. All the Luck in the World - Hollowing: this is pleasant i am sleeping now 2.3
4. Captain Beefheart - Frownland: hahaha some of that jerky pentatonic stuff is great. is this good idk 3.0
5. MBV - She Found Now: absolute classic, probably their best song, 100% case-in-point of shoegaze done perfectly right. gimme that thick blue syrup. can vividly remember hearing this for the first time over a year after have p much written Loveless off; those viscous, viscous tones rly do stick like glue huh. "where's the melody" no idiot "maybe something actually interesting" jfc it's called shoegaze not scratch my feeble inattentive back with twinkly dynamic babybullshit-gaze. glad to see this elicit a rare good Yolo take. 5.0
6. BOCC - Didn't Know What I Was In For: back in the day I actually quite liked this album (in bits anyway), think it was my first exposure to PhoeB. coming back now is definitely nostalgic, but also I have much less time for that "Ummmm I feel every syllable deeper than I have metaphors to describe, but also I'm in a coma" style of delivery. has not aged well, but we had a good run. 2.9
7. CoCa - IKSSE:3: oh man, the ups the downs the good times the bad times the COHEED TIMES. I think I've heard this live twice now, and it's a huge track in that space *however* I always thought this was one of the most overrated Coheed fan favs. Like, yes that anthemic chorus is nice, but they have better and it's a little clubfooted compared to most of their prog tracks - did it really need to drag that long? Great opener, but I never wanted to spin it on repeat like practically every other song on this glorious fucking album. 4.0

Divaman
04.08.22 | Here's the thing. I can accept that people's taste in music is different. Yours (Johnny) seems particularly bad to me (that's obviously just imo of course), but whatever.
But when people don't even take this seriously ("I really think the song is a 2.5, but I'm going to give it a 1 because blah blah blah"), there's no point to me in even doing SOTD. The averages at the end of the month are meaningless, because they don't even reflect people's real scores. That's why I walked away from SOTD last November, and it's why I need to walk away now. I can't control what other people do, but I can decide whether it's worth it for me to participate.
For the record, I rarely give 5's, but this song was always going to get a 5 from me. It had nothing to do with anyone else's scores. |

04.08.22 | In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 - Thank you, been looking for a chance to hate on this band. The vox obv terrible, the guitar flat af, drums completely uninspired, HS level songwriting. 2/5
Welcome to the Machine - Thank you, I've always felt alone in not liking this and Have A Cigar, so this thread is very therapeutic for me. Sorry Diva. 2/5

Unfortunately spotify still exists so i'm not out of the woods yet. Yeah song isn't good, the chorus is the cheesiest thing ever. Pangea
04.09.22 | Semi-related, but should we have a discussion on how to deal with classic songs? It's been controversial for a while and partly why diva left a few months ago. I think it's better if we can reach agreement on them rather than few people arbitrary low rating them (it didn't annoy me as much, but i do agree with diva that it's kind of stupid). If enough people hate them, we can think about banning them or idk something else. We can also leave it up to host with them.
Personally i don't them at all. I think it can be nice to revist a classic for sotd purpose. i also don't care at all who wins, that's not what sotd is about for me. Furthermore, a song being classic doesn't mean that that the crew will love it. We can have a, ummm, unique taste. But i would love to hear other thoughts |

04.09.22 | i don't think i've ever paid attention to the winner of SOTD, i considered this format to just be like an advent calendar or something
i'd sooner vote to ban the train of thought paragraphs like "now the man starts singing. and now there is guitar" just an inane audio description |
fogza
04.09.22 | I have arbitrarily voted lower scores for songs that don't fit the theme and I feel that's definitely ok. It's too contentious to say what constitutes a classic song and ban them, like that would spark off a debate and it's hard enough getting people to engage without complicating it more. I don't care if someone picks Lucy in the sky with diamonds or something, but I think they shouldn't care if I downvote it either because I like SOTD as an exercise to hear unfamiliar or new stuff - as pointed out you can still win picking What a wonderful world because everyone rates differently anyway. This theme feels like an exception because the whole point is massively overhyped songs according to individual taste so it almost makes sense to pick something like journey or whatever |
fogza
04.09.22 | The thing is most people on this site have some baseline music knowledge, do any of us dutifully have to listen to, say the stones' satisfaction on a particular day, to me it just seems sort of redundant because it's so played out, but yeah pan makes a case for nostalgia and I get that too. If there was a disclaimer saying this is a hardcore critical evaluation competition then I'd understand but I thought from the various judging approaches that it's a fun place where people can banter, or be serious, or whatever. Sidebar: even though it's not serious I'd still like to win someday |
Egarran
04.09.22 | It's definitely more fun to win with an obscure pick though. I won with Portishead once and it did feel a bit like cheating. |
fogza
04.09.22 | Portishead is one thing (esp depending on the song) but objectively rating purple rain for instance is actually a bit weird. If people open up this list and it's like
1.baby got back
2. like a rolling stone
3. I will always love you
4. Billie Jean
Etc etc
Are you actually going to listen to those songs again, do you really want to know what people think of those songs, etc etc? I understand some people getting upset with my take on that, but I could easily rate that stuff lower anyway and just not explain my reasoning. I must admit when I saw what a wonderful world I was like "oh so there's no SOTD for today, no point in getting out the headphones".

04.11.22 | 11. Journey: Don't stop believin' - A commercial AOR song with a beating, beautiful heart? The wizard of Oz is real folks. Steve Perry manages to tap into the texture and sentiment of soul singers like Sam Cooke over iconic piano chords, and one the few genius uses of finger tapping. The whole proto hair rock power ballad should drown but stays above water clutching a movie poster as a flotation device. 4.7 |

JohnnyoftheWell
04.11.22 | 9. Thrice - Image of the Invisible: this is pure cheese and still kinda hits a little bit, but ugh I hereby commit to reappraising Thrice's whole discog hmmmm 3.4
10. Kayo Dottt - Amaranth the Peddlar: this is a weird pick for this theme because it's a) crazy long and b) deeply situational. Not the kind of thing I'd want to listen to with no context. Dowsing Anemone is ig kinda genius in the way it erodes itself away into a purgatorial netherspace, and this song inhabits that like nothing else and makes for a perfect closer. Liminal Laughing Stock vibes for unlicensed stray mystics and a timeless pleb filter. Idk, like album like song 4.9
Also agreed v much with fogza and anat's remarks overhead with the addendum that this is listinstitution is first n foremost fun because it's exchange of opinions, and the aggregated ratings are just a minor facet of that. Pretty sure anyone here should be able to express themselves however they so please within the vague blurry confines of earnestness |

04.11.22 | Great posts, i'm pretty much in agreement here with anyone else. 04.16.22 | "She Found Now"
I don't really get full-fledged shoegaze. Like other genres with a little shoegaze mixed in can be cool, but this is just like soupy ethereal nothingness. The guitar is unsurprisingly mixed so loud that the bass and drums are inaudible (do shoegaze fans hate the bass guitar? More at 11.) Actually, I can't tell if this song has a bass or drums. No thanks, I don't love the guitar enough for this I guess.
1.8/5
"Didnāt Know What I Was in For"
This is fairly pleasant so far. It's innocuous, but not engaging.
2.5/5
"In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3"
Some okay guitar and drums so far. Not a fan of that pickup. Terrible vocals, nerdy comic book lyrics, not feeling it. This has fizzled into nerd prog metal and with that my brain is starting to tune this out. Oh, an outro? I guess it's long and "epic" enough to deserve one of those even if this isn't my style. I weirdly respect this now? I...don't know why?
2.7/5
"Welcome to the Machine"
I mean this is a classic, right? Starts with some cool machine sounds. Can we retcon this as proto-industrial or would that make the naysayers angry? There are legit loud electronic machine sounds in this song throughout! The synths are haunting, Gilmour's vocal delivery is scary and commanding. I love it honestly. The fact that Floyd could make a song where the rock elements are easily the least interesting, but still have everything be interesting, shows how they could've transcended genre more if they wanted.
4.5/5
"Image of the Invisible"
Some beeping and some riffing, okay. Don't like those vocals at all, they're just so anthemic ew. Haha that harmonizing really makes this feel like 8th-grade core. Bad stuff.

Fuck me, more Kayo Dot and it's 14 minutes. These are supposed to be things we'll love dammit. After last month's I don't have much hope. Okay bias aside, the slow intro with the quiet drums and discordant piano is okay enough so far. Decent vocals, okay maybe I'm engaged? You know, I kind of respect that this doesn't have a predictable loud guitar pickup. It subverts that kind of expectations I have on this kinda metal maybe? Too long nad drawn out though, but that's the point maybe?
3.1/5
"Don't Stop Believing"
Hahahahaha I used to work at a Sleepaway Camp and there were a few songs the girls would belt out randomly during lunchtime and this was one of them. Not as cool as when they did "Just a Friend" by Biz Markie. I've heard this song too many times against my will to judge it with any sense of fairness, but I gotta say no musical elements of this beyond the soling guitar stand out. The chorus is so cheesy that it feels like it established it's own brand of lame to influence a generation. Maybe this is terrible, but I can't even tell anymore? Can anyone actually listen to this objectively? I guess it's as bad as like "Hot Blooded" by Foreigner, but with more of a "inspiring" message so I'll give it that score.
2.9/5
"Wrap Your Arms Around Me"
How dare you pick one of the only two songs on Shaking the Habitual I have a problem with! The drums rule, but like nothing else about this song engages at all. This album is a hard 4.5/5. If they trimmed the 19-minute Old Dreams to about 7 mins and took this off, the album might've been the best album of the 2010s. I can't even yell at you for picking this one.
2.8/5
"Let's Go Crazy"
Fun fact: Prince is Dean Ween's favorite artist of all time. Admission: I've never heard this song before. I like the vocal intro, but the synths are kinda too 80s cheesy for me. The guitar and drums are very fun though.
3.4/5
"Cold Burn"
DRONES. Good drums? Hmmm. ROOOOOOOOOOOAR (haha of course) WAAAAAAAAAAH. Fuck I'm so bored now. The good drums couldn't make the rest of this good for me. Okay I'm ready to gett of this ride now.

04.16.22 | "Bohemian Rhapsody"
Another song I've heard too many times against my will, but this time it's actually a great song. I mean a powerful and beautiful piano intro, strong vocals, and an interesting premise. On the surface, it's about a murder trial, but apparently, that's just an allergy for his killing off his old self and claiming a new identity and the criticism that came because of it. A lot of anti-religion derision in the lyrics. This is a varied and beautiful piece of progressive pop. The "trial" section of the song is so dramatic and colorful without feeling obnoxious. And who doesn't like Brian May's guitar work? Do I care about Queen on the whole? Not REALLY, but this is still a prog pop classic no matter how many times it's played by people who don't know who Kate Bush is.

04.16.22 | MINI ESSAY TIME, as promised:
I grew up with SpongeBob's original run (Seasons 1-3, 1st movie) as a kid like the rest of you and always liked the music. "Loop de Loop" from the Your Shoes Untied episode was written and performed by Ween because creator Stephen Hillenburg desperately wanted his favorite band to have a song on his show. When I realized the band that did the SpongeBob Movie's credits was a real band I had to give their album The Mollusk a chance... It's not surprising that the creators of some of the most successful and long-running comedy series of all time (SpongeBob SquarePants, South Park, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia [just Glenn Howerton, but still,]) are huge Ween fans. Those shows, despite being immature, irreverent, and goofy have massive amounts of appeal to adults and Ween is often the same.
Every interview I've watched with Ween paints them in such a specific way. Dean's kind of a dick, a chill way though, but then Gene's just this laidback mellow non-pretentious guy who has a lot to say. And Gene, let there be no mistake, is the bigger creative force of the band. Dean's the better guitarist and can riff with the greats's but it's Gene's ear for melody, chameleon-like vocals, and heart and soul poured even into the stupidest of songs that really makes them stand out. It's so surprising that a band who likes to talk about food so much would present a discography that's like an aural buffet (meaning a little bit of everything even some surprising things you wouldn't expect.) Some critcis may say that artists who try to transcend genre are "trying too hard" or are being a jack of all trades by a master of none," but Ween said themselves that they're never really trying to do more of their genre-specific songs on purpose, they just write what they want at the moment and it just ends up that this leads to a variety of styles being put forth. If anything, and their lo-fi trilogy feel like evidence, maybe they're not trying hard enough to be appealing and acceptable to the common audience.
They're not too interested in sanitizing anything, I guess that's more up to their producer Andrew Weiss. Though I guess their material did get more sanitized as the band matured, and boy did they. By the time we get to White Pepper and Quebec, there actually is a noticeable maturity in the songwriting. A lot of people don't want to see the nuances in what they thought was a novelty band, but there are just so many for Ween. |
ArsMoriendi
04.16.22 | OKAY onto the actual song: Ocean man stands with fun bright drums and multiple guitar parts all playing simple cheery music. Heavy pitch-shifted deep vocals tell you all about a strange ocean man soaking up the land (Stephen Hillenburg interpreted this as being SpongeBob.) Dean's soloing is simple but expressive and pretty. It's a catchy pop-rock tune with way more going on it than meets the eye at first. Not even my favorite song on the album, but:

04.16.22 | Hey you owe me then. It wasn't bad, but I'm pretty sure some passages were written by a bot, like
"Some critics may say that artists who try to transcend genre are "trying too hard" or are being a jack of all trades by a master of none," but Ween said themselves that they're never really trying to do more of their genre-specific songs on purpose, they just write what they want at the moment and it just ends up that this leads to a variety of styles being put forth."
I doubt a human could be this general. |

Maybe the worst vocals of all time. I'd rather listen to a 15-minute black metal song than this again. The guitar was fine, the bass was fine when you cold actually year it, and the drums actually weren't for me at all. Something about screaming that harshly removes all of the actual personality from the vocals, like this could be anyone who accidentally swallowed some thumb tacks desperately screaming for help, y'know?

I know it's specific to me but his voice just kinda grates, just a personal thing. Also, the harmonica tone on this is pretty yucky and he's one of those flourish songwriting guys and I don't really dig his style of flourish. So I've never really heard him in horn dog mode and it's hilarious, I mean he's so cringe at it. Totally lame and unintentionally creepy, just bad decision making here all round. 1.5 |

04.24.22 | Quiet day at work = SOTD catch up
1. For Reverend Green. 3.5, I enjoy this song as much as it irritates me, but that sums up Animal Collective in general, enjoyable and irritating at the same time.
2. Garden of light. 3.0 I never listened to this album, actually I've only ever listened to Panopticon and liked it a lot, I'll have to go back and do a discog run. This song itself is ok, nice build up, but not memorable. Next
3. Howling. 2.2 Never heard of this band and probably never needed to. Again it's OK but I don't go for this folky indie stuff.
4. Frownland. 2.0 This isn't music just kids getting their instruments for the first time in grade 3, vocals are good though.
5. She found now. 1.0 I fucking hate this band and was going to rec them, but Pangea beat me. Song is boring, like the rest of their shit. It almost makes white noise sound good. Fuck off!!!
6. Didn't know what I was in for. 3.5 This however is pleasing. Conor and Phoebe, perfect for a Sunday morning.
7. In keeping secrets of silent earth 3. 3.0 Man, I fucked with this album when it came out. Sounding very outdated now though. The guitar tones are not great, and the vocals are again irritating yet work for the genre.
8. Welcome to the machine. 2.0 boring overrated.

10. Amaranth the Peddler. 2.0 And another band I never got the Sput hype for. This is too long and blah.
11. Fuck this song
12. Wrap your arms around me. 3.0Probably the worst song off a great album.
13. Let's go crazy. 3.8 again the worst song off a classic album.
14. Cold Burn. 3.5 What's with all the long songs. Another Sput band I never listened to. Song is pretty good, maybe I need to check the album.
15. Bohemian Rhapsody. 4.2 an overplayed classic. The goat version is better.
16. Ocean Man. 3.9 it's s fun, catchy and quirky just like ArsMoriendi
17. Fault and fracture. 4.8 I overplayed this album when it came out, now it just makes me want to smash my head through a window. In a good way that is. Classic album, and a game changer in the genre, I still hate them for Metalcore.
18. European Moons. 1.0 Boring, give me back those 4 minutes, it's like they don't even care, minimal effort on this.
|
ArsMoriendi
04.24.22 | "European Moons"
What is that voice. The bass is cool though. The instrumental break at the end definitely makes this stronger though.
3.2/5
"Hearts Alive"
13 minutes? Jesus, why is it always metal when it's overlong? Yup this is a metal song already. Riffs and harsh vocals, but very serious and shreddy. How can something so loud and aggressive be THIS boring, can someone explain? Extreme = bad, okay? And it's not because I have soft ears. Plenty of noise rock heavier than this that's good.
2/5
"Twilight of the Thunder God"
EPIC RIFFS BROS. I imagine fans of this saying that? Ah, there's the terrible vocals I was expecting. This sounds like its music video would be in an entirely white nowhere room, but the musicians would be wearing edgy black outfits. They're singing about destiny? IS THIS SUPPOSED TO BE AN ADVENTURE SONG? Oh god. Spare me more.
1.5/5
"King of Spain"
This has pretty good folk guitar, actually. Not into that voice though, but at least it's not metal growling, right? What's random about this song? He wants to be the King of Spain and he's detailing what that would be like. Pretty straightforward, really. Fantasizing about a new life is cool. I don't love this or anything, but it's quite competent and maybe a little ear-catching?
3.6/5
"The Gold"
This is nasal? Seems more flaccid than offensive to the ears. Kinda has serious radio pop vibes actually... maybe from like 2007. I'm bored. This is for people who think Coldplay's early work is good and that they got bad.
2.5/5
"Zebra"
God this band is on a fucking mission to be as generic and tired sounding as they can I swear. This isn't even relaxing either or that dreamy it's just like a huge nothing burger.
2/5 |
SlothcoreSam
04.24.22 | 19. Sweet little girl. 1.5 Not a fan of this. Music is annoying and lyrics are cringe. Even his vocals suck on this.
20. Hearts Alive. 3.8 I haven't spent a lot of time with Mastodon pre 2014, that needs to change. When I'm in the mood for this type of sludgey proggy metal I'm all in, and I feel Mastodon are one of the best.
21. Twilight of the thunder god. 3.0 Is this viking metal? It's OK I guess.
22. King of Spain. 2.5. I didn't like this album when it came out.

04.29.22 | "The Block Party"
Cartoony sound effects, but that's clearly just for the music video's intro. Now that the actual song has started it's kinda generic, but the percussion is kinda cool. These lyrics are stupid. Oh my god, what are those vocals? This is a mess, and not in a good way. I think there's supposed to be Indian classical influence in it, but it's so corny that it's just gross.
1.5/5
"Indian Girl (An Adult Story)"
I forget the dated instrumentation. This is like a 90s computer game mixed with They Might Be Giants but hip hop. So he raped her? And now he's making racist sounds oh no.
1/5 |
ArsMoriendi
04.29.22 | "Like Rats"
This is supposed to be industrial metal, but I only hear the metal. Okay, I guess there's a drum machine, but this needs more metal clanging. Man, this is boring, but I like Ministry so I was kinda having high hopes for this.
2.8/5
"Zombie"
See, I get why people would hate this, but it's so fun. I like the guitar and bass here. It's no "Zombie" by Fela Kuti, but it's still good.
3.6/5
"Health and Efficiency"
So far, this is quite fun post punk! Good guitar and goofy vocals that work. Ooh, cool thing he's doing with that guitar. So far this is awesome, what the hell is happening here! I might love this? This is almost industrial now? Ending sort of doesn't fit, but whatever, it's also good actually?
4.7/5
"Harmony Hall"
Very vibrant. Don't really like these vocals, but I do like how colorful the instrumentation is so far. Ew those harmonies. Why are bad vocals ruining an otherwise good song? The piano, the drums, the bass, all of it's good, fuck off Ezra Koenig, you sound decent usually! Eh, the vocals are actually growing on me, weird.
