02.19.22 | Also vote new wave obviously
The Cars aren't a post punk band |
parksungjoon
02.19.22 | you make a good case but you are unfortunately overlooking the fact that there thousands of band pages you would be blanking that are perfectly well served by the "old" tags and ultimately unaffected by these additions, many of them metal just as an example (you would be shocked how many metal bands with zero to few ratings there are)
ideally staff would let some group of contribs/users/mixed agree upon a list of which notable bands to blank for these purposes and take that into account |
theBoneyKing
02.19.22 | As long as enough people are aware of the changes I think they’ll catch on. Let’s also remember that we may not even get *any* new genres and if we do it may only be a handful. |
Trundle
02.19.22 | whoa, we're getting new tags?! |
ArsMoriendi
02.19.22 | @Trundle: yeah, Jom made a news article and form where we all vote for our top 5 choices

oh shit |

02.19.22 | K hear me out
It doesn't matter. Nobody's confused about what the Talking Heads sound like and the charts are such a hot mess otherwise that moving like 4 acts into a new category ain't gonna do much. If you want to know how things are accurately contextualized in a genre framework, use rym. Sput's too far gone for that to ever happen here. Just enjoy the chimeric bliss of how simple it is to have a big slice of experimental in your pie chart |
theBoneyKing
02.19.22 | Honestly all the discussion around adding new genres is more fun than actually having the new genres would/will be. Everyone knows RYM totally owns the music chart and genre classification space. |

02.19.22 | Can we add a second, identical idm tag |
Assemblage
02.19.22 | Wait, I'm slightly confused, are we currently able to actually vote on the pre-existing genre tags for bands already?
Also, the first thing that came to mind was in consideration that bands really only get up to three genre tags right? What if we could just extend the amount of genres pertaining to any one band to like 4 or 5? Would that help not take away from how it has already been previously tagged?
For example I checked out Swans and they are tagged "Experimental" "Noise Rock" and "Post Rock". Certainly they could fall into probably three or more after that. If there was a way to have them all included, it would be cool to have users then "vote" up the genre on the band page and you can see the percentage of how many on the site agree with that particular tag so instead it would be like "Experimental 48%", "Noise rock 30%" and "Post Rock 10%" and whatever else.

how do you not know this |
Trifolium
02.19.22 | Yeah I was thinking about this too Ars. They'll find a way! |
ReefaJones
02.19.22 | I'd much rather have them expanding the charts to more than 200 entries. That shouldn't be hard to do. I don't know why the charts are limited anyway. Makes no sense. |
Ryus
02.19.22 | to decrease server usage prob |

02.19.22 | 1,000 album cap on the charts so we can paralyze this site for good and truly and all go on to lead healthy, productive lives
Add freak folk |
ReefaJones
02.19.22 | I didn't know it takes so much server usage to expand the charts |
Ryus
02.19.22 | i mean idk for sure but seems like it would, you have a bunch of genres, and there are charts for every year |
ReefaJones
02.19.22 | Yeah but wouldn't they already be accounted for to make the top 200? The system has to know what's #201 to display #200 right? I don't know how any of this works lol |
Bedex
02.20.22 | by all means do not remove existing tags, I'd much rather have bands be left with their historical mistaken tags than have thousands of bands left without a tag at all (db is already incomplete enough as it is!)
plus if we vote for the newly added tags in sufficient numbers, eventually they'll overthrow the old incorrect ones |
bgillesp
02.20.22 | I’d at least like a downvote system for tags. There are a ton of bands with useless and/or secondary tags, but there is no way to remove them |
Trundle
02.20.22 | i wonder how much our pie charts are gonna change. |
JohnnyoftheWell
02.20.22 | ALL OF DEM
also i have been thinking about this list and propose that one person makes a comprehensive to-be-tagged for each newly added genre, which we can compile into one easily featureable metalist and mass-tag collectively
slight hiccup is that, if this works as well as intended and the lists are both 1) long and 2) tagged by a decent number of peeps, then artists that ain't big names may receive a number of votes disproportional to what their current tags already have, but i'm sure a little common sense will help us out here |
Avagantamos
02.21.22 | genre downvoting would be nice. most of the dnb on here is plagued by superfluous electronic tags |
Bedex
02.21.22 | genre downvoting [2] that I'm down for despite it opening an avenue for trollsieboos |
JohnnyoftheWell
02.21.22 | i like the idea on principle but also it'd require a new command/interface to be built and um yeah lmfao |
Trifolium
02.21.22 | "plagued by superfluous electronic tags" OH MY YES!!!! One of the most annoying things, true for almost all Techno and House as well.
"genre downvoting" [3] |

02.21.22 | (Oh yes what occy said exactly!) |

02.21.22 | but genre downvoting is extremely likely to happen as per TheWell, Johnny O. (2022) |

02.21.22 | it is happening my experts are building it for me right now
you know who to vote |
