not my absolute favourite or even unknown album of the year, but definitely one that had a strong impact on me. It's spoken word house written after the suicide of his best friend and extremely gut punching. This is definitely the album from this year where everyone should be aware of |
ArsMoriendi
12.01.21 | Pangea that album is from 2019, are you sure you still wanna pick it?
You can always choose not to follow the theme but I thought I’d mention that |
Pangea
12.01.21 | it is this year according to the sput database. i did mistitle the album title (for those i love) |
ArsMoriendi
12.01.21 | Yeah but discogs and RYM say it’s from 2019. I think someone on sput entered it wrong… wikipedia says it’s from 2021 though so uh I guess I’m confused lol, I’ll put it on regardless |
Pangea
12.01.21 | hmm yeah i think it should be 2021, not sure why rym or discogs would get it wrong though.
the video for the song is from 2020 but that is just a single thing i think |
fogza
12.01.21 | Didn't he release the material twice? like on bandcamp and then through a label? |
Pangea
12.01.21 | could be, i'm not sure |
fogza
12.01.21 | Yeah, from an interview i read:
Upon the record’s completion, the plan was just to make 25 copies and share them among Balfe’s inner circle, most of whom are directly addressed somewhere in the nine songs. But “one thing led to another” and after a couple of highly regarded early singles and an appearance on Later…with Jools Holland, the record is now primed for release on 26 March on September Recordings [where he now shares management with the likes of Adele and Glass Animals]. It is fair to say that early responses have been strong, especially in regard to the song ‘I Have a Love’, which addresses Curran directly. |

i decided to go for a moderately conservative choice, seeing as most of my lesser-known favourites of the year some weird avant-garde electronic albums or are quite pointless to listen as separate songs without the full album experience.

12.05.21 | 3. Feu! Chatterton - Monde Nouveau: ridiculously catchy pop song, even though it doesn't really take that many unexpected turns (not nearly as many as the album eventually does). 4.5/5
Palais d'Argile: 4/5
4. For Those I Love - I Have a Love: i had really difficult time getting into this song when it first dropped (and Pang hyped the shit out of it). the sentiment is admirable, but the lyrics and the humourless, straightfaced bluntness of the delivery are all just so funny. the album is no better, as it's the same thing with occasionally curious production choices, dragged out and sterilised. 2.5/5

5. I have a love. 2.2 I listened to this when it came out, and never revisited. I don't think I'll check it again. It's kinda like what The Streets were doing 20 years ago.

12.10.21 | 10. Something New to Worry About - this artist/track name combo is 🥺😥 Music is exactly that, a kind of dynamic emo - ofc i like that. 3.8 |

12.11.21 | 11. Hypnotic Brass Ensemble: Soon It Will Be Fire - Ok, this sounds very pretty. I have a few problems with it - I don't like Sumney's vocals, it's a bit better than Grae which I found torturous, but still. I listened to the original too and frankly there's not enough of a switch up here to justify this. Finally, the song is just too long (original or cover), I got so bored and by the 5 minute mark it just felt like nothing interesting was happening. 2.5 |
ArsMoriendi
12.11.21 | "Doom Journalism"
Is this LCD Soundsystem, but guitarier? Oh god, that chorus is so James Murphy. Pretty fun song anyway. I like the drums. The screaming at the end kinda hurts the song, but only by a little bit. Wacky ending, nice.
3.6/5
"Unilateral"
Just some chill folk so far. Oh, a floaty pickup! Unexpected. Kinda turned into a generic shoegaze song honestly.
3.2/5
"Early Age Death"
Space rap. Is this supposed to be funny? His lyrics are pretty humorous and meme-ish. He appreciates Donald Trump? This has to be satire. Calling your competition gay as an insult? I... uh idk, I'm assuming this is an intentional joke song, so I'll give it a positive score cuz it made me laugh.
3/5
"p i c k i t u p"
I don't like these vocals at all. Oh god those anthemy pop punk vocals and with a reggae backing. It's SO CHEESY NOOOOO. This sucks. "You will not control" x 100 This is irritating now. Random jazz will not save you Mr. Rosenstock, though I admit this section is good.
2.2/5
"Soon It Will Be Fire"
This sounds like Radiohead a little for some reason? I dig the horns. It's very pretty and while long doesn't feel long. I like this actually.
4.1/5 |
Pangea
12.11.21 | 7. Unilateral - the shift to post rock is sudden but doesn't feel as impactful as it should be. the spoken word section did not work for me either. 2.7
8. Early Age Death - high-energy hip hop. the prod is cool, but i can't say i care a whole lot about this. 3.0
9. pick it up - i didn't care much for no dream and making it ska doesn't make it better. 2.3
10. Something to Worry about - i do like dynamic emo post rock, but not sure if this one quite works for me. don't care too much for the gang vocals. 2.9
11. Soon It Will Be Fire - beautiful song. really pretty acoustic guitar bits and love the horns. the vocals sound like they can fall apart any moment, which i wasn't sure i loved, but it does fit. 4.0 |

12. Jabal. 3.5 Didn't mind this album, have it a few listens, but it never really resonated. This song is brooding along nicely, sounds like Inuit throat singing, then the vocals kick in. "In Colour"
Very airy piano pop. It's not bad, but I hardly find it engaging. There's a pick up though, which is fine. This is all over the place, but I don't find any of it interesting. It's like 3 boring songs mashed together.

The Puzzle by Devin Townsend off of The Puzzle. Devin’s popular on this site but it’s my second album heard since January and this month. In terms of his future stuff, I like that this isn’t just another prog album and it’s a genre mash of sorts. Still don’t know how I feel about it but I have this song on repeat. |

12.18.21 | 2. Easy - Joana Serrat - It feels weird having these very dream poppy soundscapes with such a... hm, standard folksy voice, but not a bad thing at all. I can certainly see myself listening to this again, feels like a nice track to drive around to. 3.4
3. Portobello Superhero - Myele Manzanza - A really nice jazz piece, nothing absolutely spectacular or groundbreaking, but it is still a really solid and enjoyable jam. 3.5
4. Feu! Chatterton - Un Monde Nouveau - Definitely not what I was expecting going into it for some reason. This is such a pleasant indie pop song, big fan of this. 3.9
5. For Those I Love - I Have a Love - Is this The Streets, this sounds like this is The Streets. I like The Streets tho. This sort of more spoken word style takes a bit to grow on me in general though. The instrumentals is excellent tho, definitely my type of electronic music. The middle section feels like it is missing something for me though, like it just needs a bit more omph. The Bridge is fantastic tho. 3.3 |

12.20.21 | 20. Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp: Beginning - I think the pretentious band name was already putting me off and the vocals / lyrics during the main part of the song were a bit distracting and annoying, but I gotta say, the music has a strange energy and I was feeling it. Transitions from something with an ominous hop to a positive, joyful stride at the end. 3.5 |

12.21.21 | 1. Rose Water by Hiatus Kaiyote: pretty! Sounds super colorful. Her voice is gorgeous but the piano is what steals the show for me. [4.0]
2. Easy by Joana Serrat: I really more so vibe with the message of the song. The melody and music itself isn't super special, but the lyrics resonate. [3.8]
3. Portobello Superhero by Myele Manzanza: definitely agree with this description. Super pleasant, but I forgot about it multiple times. [3.4]
4. Un Monde Nouveau by Feu! Chatterton: it's cool but I don't love it. [3.0]
5. I Have a Love by For Those I Love: maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but I think this song would have been better if this was sung vs. rapped with different instrumentation. The poetry is great, and based on the lyrics I get why this instrumentation was used, but it kinda dulls the impact for me. [2.7]
6. Arthhur - Doom Journalism: I think the album artwork is what I liked the most out of this one. Very surrealist but in stark contrast to the music which is an average pop punk song. [2.5]
7. Unilateral by Wale: I do like this. like the pared back intro and the sweet voice that evolves into a more assertive tone when the song picks up. [4.0]
8. Early Age Death by RXK Nephew: He is angry af and it's hilare. I am honestly kinda here for it. I'm adding this to a spotify playlist I have called "ANGARY MANGARYMANT" and those two words are how I'd best summarize this very funny song. [4.5]
9. p i c k i t u p by Ska Dream:I don't hate this but it's not getting a re-listen. [2.5]
10. Something New to Worry About - I Feel Fine: a bunch of bros singing together like they're all holding the mic at a karaoke bar is a rock band gimmick that only worked in Bro Hymn, and even then there were mostly verses where a lead singer's individual voice shone through. In this song it kinda comes across as lazy because all the vocal elements in the song rely on this gimmick. Music otherwise is ok but nothing special. [2.0] |

12.21.21 | 11. Soon it Will Be Fire by Hypnotic Brass Ensemble: it's a very beautiful sound with a pretty acoustic guitar. I don't think it needed to be this long because it doesn't change much in 9 minutes, but that's a minor gripe. [3.7]
12. jabal by Iosonouncane: oddly, I like this quite a bit. I also dig the introduction of the vocals and the spooky instrumentation about 2/3 of the way through. It makes the song even better. [4.6]
13. In Color by The Gathering: Been a while since I heard a song by The Gathering. They definitely have changed their sound quite significantly. This is a pleasant song if not but a tad unmemorable. But I still like it. [3.6]
14. Red by sassya-: energetic with a crisp snare. I don't love the vocals but I can deal. [3.3]
15. Dear Daddy by Bossolo: The lyrics about his absentee dad but the music makes it sound like a "happier" song tonally. Like, the music makes me think of a chill walk in the park. [2.5]

12.22.21 | "Agora"
Complex instrumentation I think? Oh no, bad screamy vocals. I legitimately don't get the appeal of this style of music.
1.5/5
"Hellnation"
A black metal band doing hardcore punk is weird, but hey it's better than a black metal band doing black metal! This is kinda metally though, so is this technical crossover thrash?
3/5
"The Company"
Sad acoustic guitar. She's so expressive and in a simple honest kind of way. This isn't really my style, but I appreciate it anyway. It's clearly very thoughtful and pretty and achieves what it intended to do well. Fuck it.
3.9/5
"Beginning"
BASSY. The drums rule. Honestly, everything so far rules. Ooh brassy. BONGOS. YES, EVERYTHING BUT THE KITCHEN SINK. WEIRD HARMONIZED VOCALS WTF THIS IS AWESOME. Tell me the rest of this album is this good. I will change my ballot to include this. MILO TELL ME. Violins and hand mallet percussion too? Okay okay, you win song, I love you now.
5/5
"Wait for It"
Post grungy alt-rock? Sounds like the vocalist is doing a meh Layne Staley impersonation. Not for me. Now they're trying to do that Modest Mouse vocal thing, but gravelier. I don't like this.

12.22.21 | 16. Song Keys to Creation by Irreversible Entanglements: long and kinda fever-dreamy jazz piece. I tuned out much of it but for the parts I heard I kinda felt like I was overhearing a conversation with jazz in the background. [2.8]
17. Agora by Invent, Animate: Hey.....this video is from 2016 so it can't be off a 2021 release! Anyways, kinda reminds me of the male version of The Agonist for some reason, at least musically. It is harsh wintery so it has that going for it. [3.2]
18. Hellnation by Mayhem: I think Mayhem should dabble in punk more often. [3.4]
20. Beginning by Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp: OK yeah this is good. I'm often multitasking when doing SotD and part of the test is whether the song can "distract" me, and this one can. At the very least it's got me dancing along even when I'm trying to concentrate on something else. Very upbeat, very fun. [4.2]
21. Wait For It by Cold Collective: And I'm tuned out to this again. Nothing much to say, honestly. [2.6]

12.22.21 | 22. Musical blank affect sing-talking with a weak ooh's hook. There's some synth stabs for backing that segue into drum and bass passages. On the plus side, it's not amateur shock trap (which is what I expect from tik tok stars) and it's short. 2.4 |

Love me some Rundle. Sounds like what I wish I sounded out when I drop tune the ol acoustic and try to find strange chord shapes. Love how gently adorned this is with piano, and the intimacy of the recording as opposed to her other material. 4.5

"Invisível"
Pretty and light! I like the piano. I like the light soul backing. Musically, it's kinda Minnie Riperton's upbeat sound. Porc, check Adventures in Paradise.

"카리스마 대빵큰오리"
Very lo-fi and messy. Why would a white dude call himself Asian Glow? This is boring, but I weirdly like the shitty production. Sometimes I wonder if shitty production is secretly better than extra hi-fi production. Song itself is meh and the vocals are not for me.
2.8/5
"Head-Off"
Not into these vocals and the music is meh. The only reason this isn't radio rock is cuz the vocals suck. I'm tired of modern "post-punk" honestly. Sorry, I feel like I'm being harsh here.

"Black Wings Hunt"
Soft industrial music? Electro-industrial I suppose? RYM says this is shoegaze, but I don't even hear any guitar. Can shoegaze be guitarless? I thought it was all about guitar pedals. Dull stuff regardless. Go somewhere song.

"The Puzzle"
Modern prog opening so far. Kinda folky too I guess. Meh. Harmless, but boring. I half appreciate it getting weird at the end, but why wasn't this like the whole song? A cool outro can't save you, Devin!

12.31.21 | 22. I Must Apologize by PinkPantheress: pleasant but underwhelming. Kinda think it's good TikTok music. [2.9]
23. Tippy Hightailed It by Godcaster: some of the sounds in this feel like how it feels when you eat an orange after brushing your teeth while you have root sensitivity. Nothing against it otherwise, but some noises do trigger the old misophonia. [2.4]
24. Invisível by Sofía Campos: oooh something pretty! And something upbeat and happy with a whimsical melody. It makes me think the day is gonna be good. Now, since I don't understand the lyrics, there is a tiny suspicion that it's doing the "happy tune, sad lyrics" but that's just my general distrust and paranoia speaking. [4.4]
25. 카리스마 대빵큰오리 by Asian Glow: rough production. It's not bad but not for me. [2.5]
26. Head-Off by Drug Church: Although I recently realized that more than post punk I just like old school goth rock done by post punk bands, Post punk is still pretty chill. This doesn't really compare much to the post punk from the 20th century, but it's better than a LOT of things. [3.6]
27. You're the One by Laurel: eh, this is a pleasant tune to hear randomly out in a social setting but otherwise it's your average pop song with nothing new to say [2.3]
28. Black Wings Hunt by Nightcrush: Besides the autotune, I kinda like this - it actually strikes me as darkwave which is a genre I have a soft spot for. The autotune is still really gimmicky but it's also not loud and obnoxious so it can be tolerated. The music itself is kinda nice and relaxing. [3.9]
29. Mohabbat by Arooj Aftab: ah yes, Pakistani folky music. I'm lucky that Urdu is really similar to Hindi so I can kinda understand this a little bit. From what I can gather it's a song about how they're "not the one" for this other person and that they're going on separate paths. Really beautiful voice, and I'm kinda digging the culture deep cuts here since this is a ghazal. This has more of the indie folk instruments going for it instead which I also really like. I don't mind the length of the song - long folk tunes are kinda my vibe right now anyway. I'll check out the album and add this song to my "Haunting Folk" playlist. =) [4.7]
31. Creatures by Viagra Boys: there's nothing SUPER special about this song but I just....like it. I like the weird voice, the bass line, and the odd brass here and there. It's a bop that despite being just a regular dance tune gets a pass from me. Lol. [3.3] |
