All of my Soul/Funk/R&B 5s and 4.5s Except...

Leaving out the post-punk-funk (like Talking Heads) and alt metal funk (Like Primus) I like cuz they kinda don't fit the vibe I'm going for.
1Fela Kuti
Sorrow Tears and Blood

This afrobeat release is mostly jazz, but deff is funky too. More Fela to come.

5/5
2Parliament
Funkentelechy Vs. the Placebo Syndrome

This is better than Mothership Connection, but...

5/5
3Parliament
Mothership Connection

...this is still also a 5

5/5
4Stevie Wonder
Innervisions

More Stevie to be on here, but this is the best one.

5/5
5The Mothers of Invention
Over-Nite Sensation

Everything but the opener fits. Top 5 Zappa.

5/5
6Betty Davis
They Say I'm Different

Her voice is not for everyone, but I love it.

4.5/5
7Curtis Mayfield
Superfly

His debut is a 4/5 and the long songs on there are amazing, but this is more consistant.

4.5/5
8D'Angelo
Black Messiah

Greatness. Brown Sugar's a 4 and Voodoo is a mixed bag 3.5, but all 3 have a ton of classics.

4.5/5
9Dr. John
Gris-Gris

They call it New Orleans R&B, I call it great.

4.5/5
10Erykah Badu
New Amerykah Pt. One: 4th World War

This is my closest 4.5/5 to being a 5/5.

4.5/5
11Erykah Badu
New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh

I'm a sucker for the personal and psychedelic elements. Mama's Gun and Baduizm are 4s, so don't be mad that they're not on here. I love 'em too.

4.5/5
12Funkadelic
Maggot Brain

Can you get to that?

4.5/5
13Hiatus Kaiyote
Choose Your Weapon

This had a lot of hype.

4.5/5
14Hiatus Kaiyote
Mood Valiant

So why not this? This is even better! It's 2021 soul, check it.

4.5/5
15Janelle Monae
The ArchAndroid

Creative concept album. Electric Lady's a 4.

4.5/5
16Minnie Riperton
Perfect Angel

Stevie produced this and wrote some songs so if you like Stevie check it.

4.5/5
17Minnie Riperton
Adventures In Paradise

This has no right to be this good, but it is.

4.5/5
18Ohio Players
Honey

Finally got into these guys this year and they're great. Pleasure is a 4/5

4.5/5
19Parliament
The Clones Of Dr. Funkenstein

This is almost a 5, but loses me a little toward the end.

4.5/5
20Sly and The Family Stone
There's A Riot Goin' On

Life/Stand!/Fresh are all 4s. This is wonderful, but not quite a 5.

4.5/5
21Stanley Clarke
School Days

Jazz funk y'know.

4.5/5
22Stevie Wonder
Songs in the Key of Life

He deserves all of his #1s more than most hit artists do.

4.5/5
23Stevie Wonder
Fulfillingness' First Finale

I used to have this 5'd, but it grew off me, SLIGHTLY.

4.5/5
24Stevie Wonder
Talking Book

"Maybe Your Baby" is an institution.

4.5/5
25Van Morrison
Moondance

Blue-eyed soul can be amazing too.

4.5/5
26Van Morrison
Astral Weeks

This is a soul album, but it's also a folk album. Good shit.

4.5/5
27William Onyeabor
Atomic Bomb

Thank you Minus for getting me into him.

4.5/5
28Fela Kuti
Zombie

Side A > Side B.

4.5/5
29Fela Kuti
Expensive Shit

Side B > Side A

4.5/5
30Fela Kuti
Roforofo Fight

Those drums.

4.5/5
31Fela Kuti
He Miss Road

IDK Fela's got a lot of good albums okay?
