ArsMoriendi
08.05.21 | "Venus in Furs" is great, it was in the running and prob would make top 15 with "Rock & Roll", "What Goes On" "Beginning to See the Light" and uh maybe...."Who Loves the Sun"?
In fact quick extend:
11. "Beginning to See the Light"
12. "Venus in Furs"
13. "Rock & Roll"
14. "What Goes On"
15. "Who Loves the Sun" |
JohnnyoftheWell
08.05.21 | Swap 10 for Venus in Furs, add I Heard Her Call My Name, Pale Blue Eyes and maybe all Tomorrow's Parties if feeling generous and this is pretty much all the VU anyone needs. Good list |
porcupinetheater
08.05.21 | Fuck yeah top 2 are 2, only big change’d be the rest of the top 6 is the rest of White Light |
fogza
08.05.21 | The gift has no replay value, sorry :P |

08.05.21 | accurate but still iconic |
fogza
08.05.21 | LMAO After Hours at no 4, like wtf all tomorrows parties is one of the greatest songs of the 60's. |
conesmoke
08.05.21 | Heroin, it's wife, and it's my life m//
Probs followed by all tomorrow's parties, femme fatale, Venus in furs and pale blue eyes

fogza
08.05.21 | I could get with that ranking |
porcupinetheater
08.05.21 | If The Gift has no replay value, then how come I keep replayin it? |

WeepingBanana
08.05.21 | Gotta have What Goes On |
Pheromone
08.05.21 | candy says / sister ray / the gift / pale blue eyez / lady godiva
n maybe some stuff off the nico album |
Ryus
08.05.21 | lady godiva seems underrated, one of my favs for sure |
WeepingBanana
08.05.21 | Haven’t listened to Loaded or their live/comp stuff in forever but we’re all in agreement s/t is best right? |
fogza
08.05.21 | My fave is The Velvet Underground & Nico. |
ArsMoriendi
08.05.21 | White Light/White Heart > The Velvet Underground & Nico > The Velvet Underground > Loaded
But the middle 2 are almost tied |
ArsMoriendi
08.05.21 | All Tomorrow's Parties is like mid-tier VU and my least fave of the Nico songs, but it's still very good of course
Fogza with the 2 worst takes in the thread tbh |
Ryus
08.05.21 | all tomorrows parties is incredible |
fogza
08.05.21 | "Fogza with the 2 worst takes in the thread tbh"
history will vindicate me haha!
"All Tomorrow's Parties is like mid-tier VU "
I love ya Ars, but you are so incredibly wrong on this. I can maybe forgive the Gift because I get people like having weird picks, but honestly, After Hours is like an ok throwaway closer. I cannot imagine anyone picking that as the 4th best VU song. |
ArsMoriendi
08.05.21 | After Hours is deff not a throwaway. It's got this charming earnestness to it and high relatability. Lou apparently wrote it with Tucker in mind too, so it's also a sweet gesture. Sure it's not complex or groundbreaking musically, but it's incredibly well written and stands out in stark contrast due to its simple folkiness.
I also totally love how awkwardly Long Island she sounds on it. Their 3rd album wouldn't be as good without it

08.05.21 | After Hours is great twee. |
JohnnyoftheWell
08.05.21 | [3]
I vaguely agree with most fogza takes here, but After Hours is above water and a harder KEEP than All Tomorrow's Parties |
ArsMoriendi
08.05.21 | TBH the only reason The Gift has less replay value is that it's long and narrative, which doesn't aid itself to a passive listen... but like just actively listen when it's on idk |
JohnnyoftheWell
08.05.21 | yeah I don't think the Gift having limited replay value makes it any worse of a song tbh - the only catch is that it's never gonna be as good as it was the first time, but that's ___ |
SandwichBubble
08.05.21 | Gotta say though, as much as I love sister ray, I rarely make it through all 17 minutes these days. Influence be damned, that song's way too long. |
JohnnyoftheWell
08.05.21 | i recently heard a garage punk album (both noisey and mediocre as all hell) that consisted of 10 mins of shrapnel originals and one full length sister ray cover. was scandalised and am unsure whether it has raised or diminished my view of the original |
SandwichBubble
08.05.21 | There are so many albums that are worse off for having a "not as good as the original, but not bad enough to hate" cover on them.
I like garage punk though, what's the album? |
JohnnyoftheWell
08.05.21 | lmfao Anadorei - Pussy Cannibal Holocaust. ashamed to admit i forgot the title for a moment |
SandwichBubble
08.05.21 | I'm looking at this cover and judging you, Johnny. You're always on brand.
But thanks. I'll try it. |
WeepingBanana
08.05.21 | Wasn’t there some band whose try out consisted of performing a Sister Ray cover? |
WeepingBanana
08.05.21 | Maybe it was joy division. If anyone knows lmk |
fogza
08.05.21 | "After Hours is deff not a throwaway. It's got this charming earnestness to it and high relatability. Lou apparently wrote it with Tucker in mind too, so it's also a sweet gesture. It's repetitive, basic (although this usually isn't a problem for me), and generic. I don't think Tucker's performance is memorable. It actually feels long for a 2 minute song. I'll be your mirror is a better song. |
ArsMoriendi
08.05.21 | You say that like I'll Be Your Mirror isn't also great
After Hours is a 2-minute folk song, how complex do you want it to be? lol, of course it's repetitive, but it still has a bridge despite that |
fogza
08.05.21 | Lol, it is great, that's kind of my point. |
ArsMoriendi
08.05.21 | TBH I thought After Hours was one of my least controversial picks here since I thought it was universally loved by VU fans
Also idk if I'd call a song about Tucker's personal shyness and wanting to overcome it generic, how many 60s songs can you name about that? |
fogza
08.05.21 | "how many 60s songs can you name about that?"
Hmmm... maybe you have a point there. I dunno, it's just one of those songs I hear and it goes in one ear and out the other. But when I hear Nico sing "Please put down your hands", like that leaps out of the speakers and into my soul, and I can't really understand the low position of all the tracks from the debut that feel like absolutely timeless classics. I'll let it go now anyway, getting too worked up about nothing. |
ArsMoriendi
08.05.21 | I mean I feel that way about the first 3 in general, though maybe to a lesser extent than you feel about the debut... not trying to discredit The Velvet Underground & Nico by saying I love some songs from their other albums more |
fogza
08.05.21 | No absolutely, like I said, my bad, it's just a list. |
ReturnToRock
08.05.21 | KISS THE BOOT
OF SHINY SHINY LEATHERRRR
... |
ReturnToRock
08.05.21 | Btw, I'm a Boy is a song about sexual identity from 1967, so theres that. |
botulist
08.05.21 | I mean, after hours is a good song but definitely the song that people who don’t like VU but want to latch onto. The Gift is fucking great though I find myself listening to the instrumental version about half the time nowadays. And Sister Ray is just horseshit after the first five minutes.
Also, do not understand loving after hours so much and not including anything off Loaded. Two sides of the same normie VU coin really |
ArsMoriendi
08.05.21 | "Btw, I'm a Boy is a song about sexual identity from 1967, so theres that."
Fair, if only I liked The Who...
"Also, do not understand loving after hours so much and not including anything off Loaded. Two sides of the same normie VU coin really"
It's not about Loaded being normie/commercial, but just that the overall songwriting quality is down on it. The poppy songs on the s/t are really cool (especially After Hours, Beginning to See the Light, and What Goes On.) I do like the first 3 tracks on Loaded, especially Rock & Roll, but the majority of it (especially the back 7 tracks) are kinda a chore...when pop rock is supposed to be fun |
botulist
08.06.21 | fair enough. List is quality regardless. Can’t go wrong with the first three albums. Though I will always shamelessly include Foggy Notion off the s/t comp n my own list. Evil jangle pop at its best. |
