| Umbrella Contest 2020 Round 10: Factory Umbrella
2 more out, 7 still in! | 1 | | Coil Love's Secret Domain
1. Link a song via YouTube, Spotify, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, DailyMotion, Vimeo... or whatever you like as long as I don't have to download something.
2. The genre this round is Industrial/noise! EBM, electro-industrial, industrial metal, industrial hip hop, neofolk, harsh noise, and power electronics all work. No noise pop and if you're gonna pick noise rock, make sure it's more noise (or industrial) than rock.
3. Aim to impress me with what you pick, since I'm rating these.
4. If I know the song already, I'll tell you to pick something new, otherwise you're good.
5. I'm going to start each new round every Tuesday night, so if you're late, you're out.
***The winner can recommend me whatever album blah blah you know*** | 2 | | Bill Evans Waltz for Debby
Ryus
“My Foolish Heart”
The piano is pretty and I like those light brushy sound to the percussion. This would make good dinner party music. I like how it’s picking up in tempo, but still relatively chill. Nice bass coming in. This is so sophisticated sounding. You know, it almost reminds me of the opening scene music from a Charlie Brown Special. Charlie’s walking to school and the snow is falling or something. Maybe he runs into Linus. It’s nostalgic in a way.
3.6/5 (ELIMINATED!) | 3 | | Carla Bley Escalator Over the Hill
GhandhiLion
“Hotel Overture”
From chill sax to something a bit more dancy. The horns sound like a wheel slowly running out of air crossed with a strutting elephant. Oh, now it’s changed, it sounds like some sort of argument between the saxophone and the rest of the instruments, like an old movie where some big mouth is getting beat up by a local gang of hooligans. They left him, bloody on the side of an alley, who will help him? He cries out in pain! Tragedy! The saxophone SCREAMS! I’m pretty sure this guy died. That’s so sad. The bass solo is his family lamenting his passing, at a funeral. His mother is sobbing uncontrollably. God damn, this song went from confident and angry to depressing as hell.
3.8/5 (Passed to next round) | 4 | | Cal Tjader Fried Bananas
garas
“Eye of the Devil”
Smooth organ and with a latin flair to the percussion. It’s like waiting room music, but sexy. Maybe it’s Hell and your punishment is to wait in a dentist office waiting room with a toothache forever while a sexy Satan tries to seduce you. Ooh are those vibes? I like that.
3.8/5 (Passed to next round) | 5 | | Mark Hollis Mark Hollis
Pangea
“The Daily Planet”
Very choppy sounding with cool percussion. Jazz really knows how to do drums, I swear they’ve been the highlight of a lot of these so far. Oh, this is the Talk Talk guy, that explains why this is so atmospheric. Wait, lyrics? Oh nice. These lyrics are kinda proggy sounding like something Robert Wyatt would sing. This is slowly coming together in a build up, I can appreciate that. Violins, harmonica, guitar, this song keeps adding instruments. Keeping it fresh. Inventive, but subtle.
4/5 (Passed to next round) | 6 | | The Clifford Gilberto Rhythm Combination I Was Young and I Needed The Money
budgie
"Soulbath"
Hip hop drums so far and record scratching. Not too jazzy so far. Wait, the organ is jazzy as hell. Ooh, was that a xylophone twinkling? That’s fuckig sick. Is the whole album damn good?
5/5 (+.5 for winning last round) = 5.5/5 (ROUND WINNER, handicap (for others) of +.05 for the next round) | 7 | | Bugge Wesseltoft New Conception of Jazz
Lord(e)Po)))ts
“Somewhere in Between”
Bassy as hell and discordant keys, so far so good. I like the vocals too, they’re arguably kinda plain, but they help bring normalcy to an otherwise strange atmosphere of textures. Good balance of everything. Jarring trumpet and saxophone? Sure why not. I definitely like this.
4.3/5 (Passed to next round) | 8 | | Peter Brotzmann Machine Gun
NeroCorleone
“Responsible”
The bass is playing some odd time signature and the drums are chaotic. Free jazz? The most abrasive saxophone ever is screaming. Now it just sounds like musique concrete with random scraping sounds. This is starting to sound a little endless. I like it conceptually, but I’m not sure if I wanna hear for 8 minutes. Wait, as soon as I said that it changed to something jammy that was more pleasant. Good timing haha. This was good, but I don’t exactly love it.
3.5/5 (ELIMINATED!) | 9 | | Eric Dolphy Out to Lunch!
Zig
“Straight Up and Down”
God damn, is this Frank Zappa? You know Zappa has a song called
The Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue” on his album Weasels Ripped My Flesh and this song makes it clear why. Clearly Zappa loved Dolphy’s music. Playful vibraphone, screaming sax, but overall a weird atmospheric vibe brought by the simple bass and drums. Should I get into Eric Dolphy if I like Zappa’s jazz stuff? They’re so similar my god. Whoa those drums are like a ringing bell, and so are the vibes. I feel like I could run to this. It’s energetic, but not also sounds like planned chaos, if that makes sense.
4/5 (Passed to next round) | 10 | | Oliver Nelson Skull Sessions
Minushuman24
“Baja Bossa”
The guitar sounds so romantic. Bossa nova with an intensity to it, interesting! Nice key solos, good bass, and overall pleasant atmosphere that wasn’t boring. Not my favorite, but I like it!
3.7/5 (Passed to next round) | |

07.14.20 | Looks like Nero won't be winning two times in a row
-
To restate:
No noise pop and if you're gonna pick noise rock, make sure it's more noise than rock.
Any form of industrial mixed with anything is fine though. | Pangea
07.14.20 | oh man 3.6's are eliminated now. shit's getting real | Ryus
07.14.20 | damn thats brutal
| garas
07.14.20 | Top 7? Holy cow. And it was very close! I have to think about this one... | Minushuman24
07.14.20 | Being last on the list is anxiety inducing. I think I should have gone more abstract with my rec. | Minushuman24
07.14.20 | Oh, this one is gonna be difficult | Zig
07.14.20 | "Should I get into Eric Dolphy if I like Zappa’s jazz stuff? "
Yes :D | Lord(e)Po)))ts
07.14.20 | That entire album that budgie rec'd a song from is amazing, such a good find | Lord(e)Po)))ts
07.14.20 | Also 3.6 being an eliminating score is impressive, shit is getting hairy | ArsMoriendi
07.14.20 | I wonder if anything this round will make my ears bleed | budgie
07.14.20 | the only thing i can even think of in this list of genres is KMFDM lol, which i haven't jammed in def over a decade | Minushuman24
07.15.20 | do it, rec KMFDM | budgie
07.15.20 | ha ha i am trying to win this thing ok | Minushuman24
07.15.20 | coward. | Minushuman24
07.15.20 | Alrighty, I think I'm gonna put this in here for the time being, it might change. I hope it fits your theme enough.

07.15.20 | Skimmed it, and yes it's fairly blatantly industrial | NeroCorleone
07.15.20 | :( I was looking forward to the industrial round, but I guess its time to step aside. | GhandhiLion
07.15.20 | A nu jazz song wins the jazz round. I should have voted Amon Tobin, I never knew it was suitable. | ArsMoriendi
07.15.20 | @Ghandhi: last round: "2. The genre this round is jazz! Swing, bebop, modal jazz, jazz fusion, free jazz, nu-jazz, jazz rap, jazzcore. Anything jazz, man! Even clarinet jazz!"
^I directly mentioned nu-jazz in my description | GhandhiLion
07.15.20 | oh
Ramleh - Spear flowers
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtlAC4YimSw | Lord(e)Po)))ts
07.15.20 | You should accept coldwave / darkwave / minimal synth for this round as they are often just as analogous to industrial techno and ebm as other ~waves~ and post punk | budgie
07.15.20 | why is neofolk included in the accepted genre styles? when i think of neofolk i think of something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBzIsyFDEtQ | Lord(e)Po)))ts
07.15.20 | Because neo folk is a form of industrial + folk that evolved out of shit like post industrial, post punk, and darkwave etc
Which is another reason why darkwave and coldwave and minimal synth should also be included imo, if not also post punk | Minushuman24
07.15.20 | Oh sick, ramleh was one of my backups | GhandhiLion
07.15.20 | "Because neo folk is a form of industrial + folk "
No, it's not. There are a few neofolk artists with industrial influences though.
coldwave, darkwave and minimal synth are very unrelated. | ArsMoriendi
07.16.20 | Idk man just pick music with harsh machine sound stuff even if it’s minor and poppier like EBM | Ryus
07.16.20 | i tried to go safe but i think i went too safe
i was unsure of your taste in jazz so i wanted to stay on the conventional side | Lord(e)Po)))ts
07.16.20 | @ghandhi yes, it is and no they arent dont bother ever sharing your opinions as you are always wrong | Lord(e)Po)))ts
07.16.20 | "Neofolk is a genre of Contemporary Folk music that emerged in the mid-1980s from the Post-Industrial scene. The most notable pioneers of the genre are Death in June, Current 93 and Sol Invictus.
Common instruments utilized in neofolk music are the acoustic guitar, violin, flute, horn, trumpet and frame drum. Many artists incorporate elements of Martial Industrial, Experimental, Darkwave, Dark Ambient or Traditional Folk Music into their music. Lyrically the genre often deals "
"Neofolk, also known as post-industrial or apocalyptic folk, is a form of experimental music blending elements of folk and industrial music, which emerged in punk rock circles in the 1980s.[1] Neofolk may either be solely acoustic or combine acoustic folk instrumentation with various other sounds.[2]"
| Lord(e)Po)))ts
07.16.20 | genres that blend a bunch of shit aren't always going to come out one way or another, there is massive variance, but in simplified terms it is a useful enough way to describe it, why it and all these adjacents are all related, and why neofolk is here to begin with don't ever @ me again | ArsMoriendi
07.16.20 | Neofolk counts 100%
Post-punk does not count unless it's specifically industrial post-punk (Killing Joke is an example?)
Coldwave and darkwave will count if they're mixed with industrial, but not otherwise (People Are People by Depeche Mode would work if I didn't already know it well, and that's darkwave right? idk) The same goes for minimal wave, new wave, ethereal wave, and any other 70s/80s "wave" genres. None of these are inherently related to industrial, but I'm sure there's crossovers and those crossovers will count. | GhandhiLion
07.16.20 | @Lord(e)Po)))ts
From that same rym page:
-Contemporary Folk
---Neofolk
Neofolk is folk music, not industrial.
"Many artists incorporate elements of Martial Industrial..."
'MANY', not all. 'ELEMENTS', not whole.
If you read some of the comments on the 'Profile history' section on rym, you will find users that explain the relationship to industrial. I recommend Miklaks submission as a start.
| Lord(e)Po)))ts
07.16.20 | What the fuck did I just tell you you greasy beanpole | GhandhiLion
07.16.20 | That neofolk is industrial + folk | ArsMoriendi
07.16.20 | I kinda don't care what RYM has to say at all, so I'm sticking with the Wikipedia description | Lord(e)Po)))ts
07.16.20 | i don't care how many casserole layers of autism you need to slop on everything to rationalize your grievously pedantic contradictions don't @ me

fair, agreed with this outline | Minushuman24
07.16.20 | so suicide would work for sure then | ArsMoriendi
07.16.20 | I only know "Ghostrider" by Suicide, and it's a bit on the edge of counting, but I'd probably count it so if their other stuff sounds like that, feel free to try it, but it seems risky | Lord(e)Po)))ts
07.16.20 | Fuck this was a really hard round. So many ways to go with this and I'm not confident about you loving any of them. Wasting a tonne of time pondering potential candidates from Muslimgauze, Skullflower, and Brighter Death Now to Kiss the Anus of a Black Cat and Von Thronstahl just to circle back to literally the very first thing I thought of recc'ing. I'm just gonna go for it.

A coldwave band but their ebm and industrial influences are more than apparent enough to justify it's inclusion imo.

07.17.20 | me too sint me too | ArsMoriendi
07.17.20 | Sorry Zig, but I've heard that song before
Also not really what I'm asking for when I say "if you're gonna pick noise rock, make sure it's mostly noise" I meant like stuff that's more feedback and distortions than discernable instruments (in other words regular noise music that *just happens* to features guitars/drums. Stuff like Glenn Branca, Sonic Youth, and even like The Jesus Lizard won't cut it this round. I meant stuff more like Black Dice lol | Zig
07.18.20 | I'll rec another track, then.

07.19.20 | You didnt even understand what neo folk was until yesterday when I explained it to you in that other thread | Lord(e)Po)))ts
07.19.20 | I think I've clarified more than enough to excuse an oversimplification used to try and explain the origins of the genre to a pea brained simpleton, I was just trying to be courteous didnt think I'd wind up fending off a swarm of pedantic autists | Lord(e)Po)))ts

07.19.20 | Forget the subgenre for a second a think “is this song industrial?” If the answer seems like no, then don’t pick it.
Like this isn’t rocket science. If you don’t think all neofolk is industrial, then don’t pick the neofolk songs that don’t sound industrial to you | Pangea
