Umbrella Contest 2020 Round 4: Satin Umbrella

2 more out, and 20 still in. (+ 1 out for inactivity, please don't be late guys!)
1Parliament
Funkentelechy Vs. the Placebo Syndrome

1. Link a song via YouTube, Spotify, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, DailyMotion, Vimeo... or whatever you like as long as I don't have to download something.

2. The genre this round is R&B. Characteristically, it's a commercial sounding genre that focuses on emotion, and rhythm (so a lot of prominent bass.) This includes all soul and most funk (exceptions being Post Punk, Alt. rock and Nu-metal type funk because who the hell thinks "Crosseyed and Painless" "If You Have to Ask" or "Jerry Was a Racecar Driver" is R&B?)

3. Aim to impress me with what you pick, since I'm rating these.

4. If I know the song already, I'll tell you to pick something new, otherwise, you're good.

5. I'm going to start each new round every Tuesday night, so if you're late, you're out. My 2 least favorite recs will be eliminated each round.

***The winner of the competition can recommend me whatever 2 albums they want and I'll listen to them no matter the album as long as it's not impossible to find..***
2James Horner
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

Divaman
“Main Title from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan”

This makes me think of a John Williams type theme. It’s epic, brass heavy and loud! Seems like a pretty run of the mill fanfare.

3/5 (Passed to next round)
3Pietro Locatelli
Concerto No. 12 in D major: Il Laberinto Armonico

budgie
“Concerto No .11 in A Major”

Harpsichord, eh? The violin feels very fancy and makes me think of a satyr dancing in a forest. Damn, that violin is so squeaky. Is this baroque? Yup Google says baroque! I knew it! Those baroque pieces are so often fancy and stuck up sounding. Oh my god that squeaking, there are ways to play violin that aren't so squeaky, my god. Now the forest has caught on fire and the satyr and his bird and squirrel friends are rushing to put out the fire. Oh no satyr got caught in the fire and is crying for help, but his animal friends are too weak to pull him out. SOMEONE SAVE HIM. Oh god it sounds like he’s dying. What the fuck budgie, wait he’s okay. Was it magic? I don’t know. This is fun enough.

3.5/5 (Passed to next round)
4Aram Khachaturian
Gayane

Uzumaki
“Lullaby”

It’s a lullaby, so I suppose it being super mellow makes perfect sense. Fluttery flutes and somber violins. Wait, this is a lullaby, why did it get so loud all of a sudden? I can’t fall asleep to this! This was good enough.

3/5 (Passed to next round)
5Hildegard von Bingen
Antiphons

Protokute
“Ave Maria, O Auctrix Vite”

A Gregorian chant? Her voice is pretty and at least it’s not entirely a cappella. Pretty can only go so far though. I’m bored 3 minutes in. I feel like I’m in Church right now.

2.4/5 (ELIMINATED)
6Ravi Shankar
The Sounds Of India

Lord(e)Pott)))s
“Dadra”

What a showoff, playing that sitar at lightning speed. Sitar and tablas are cool though. I always liked them, though I admit I’ve mostly heard them in western psychedelic music. I like this aesthetically. It’s a bit wanky for me structurally though, so I can’t give it anywhere near a perfect score.

3.6/5 (Passed to next round)
7Jason Graves
Dead Space Original Soundtrack

ZombieToyDuck
“Fly Me to the Aegis Seven Moon”

Okay, this one is creepy as hell. Is that some Bernard Hermann influence? Damn, am I gonna get stabbed in the shower? Seriously this is like a heart attack. These are all complements by the way. Oh god scary background vocals, fuck. It’s from a horror video game and all I can say is: this is VERY effective.

4.2/5 (Passed to next round)
8Masami Ueda
Okami: OST

JustJoe.
“Harami Lake”

So tranquil. This is very backgroundy. I guess that’s it’s purpose though that makes it hard to love.

2.9/5 (Passed to next round)
9Krzysztof Penderecki
Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima

Minushuman24
“Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima”

This is abstract and horrifying. That fits well since it’s about the victims of Hiroshima. Somehow, this calm section is even more haunting than the loud section. Like it’s the aftermath of the bomb or something. It keeps going in and out of its crazy and calm sections though, hmmm. It’s good.

3.5/5 (Passed to next round)
10Gorguts
Colored Sands

dedex
“The Battle of Chamdo”

Wait, this isn’t metal! It’s pretty good classical stuff. I like the cello here. This worked pretty well.

3.5/5 (Passed to next round)
11Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
Album

Trifolium
Leroy Anderson - “The Typewriter”

Haha a 3rd of this video is just them setting up. Okay this is just pure ingenuity. How could I do anything other than enjoy this? Short, sweet, and with a sense of humor. Love it.

4.6/5 (ROUND WINNER, handicap (for others) of +.05 for the next round)
12Johannes Brahms
Symphony No. 4 in E minor, Op. 98

bgillesp
"4th Movement”

The strings are pretty. This is quite bombastic. Now it’s mellowed out. This is nice, and I do like other things I’ve heard from Brahms, but this one isn’t clicking much for some reason. It’s cool overall though still.

3/5 (Passed to next round)
13Motoi Sakuraba and Yuka Kitamura
Dark Souls III (Original Game Soundtrack)

Aberf
“Nameless King”

Right out of the gate, this sounds like a crazy war scene. Harpsichord again? Hmmmmm. PRetty crazy!

3.5/5 (Passed to next round)
14Ground Zero
Revolutionary Pekinese Opera, Ver. 1.28

Avagantamos
“Opening - Flying Across the J.P. Yen”

Okay, so the song is only 9 minutes. Phew, when you linked me a 49 min video I was like aaaah until I realized. Worst 7 seconds of my day. Okay now it’s been about a minute and all I hear are weird background noises and jiggling chimes. I’m not saying that enjoying this makes someone pretentious, but I feel like personally, I would have to be pretentious to say I like this. Goddamn this is way more boring than it is experimental. I guess it comes off as musique concrete in a way? This is what Satan uses to punish hipsters in hell. Satan: “Oh you’re so cutting edge and against the mainstream? Well you’ll love this for the rest of eternity!” Okay, it kind of got cool 6 minutes in. This sounds like the organic counterpart to industrial music now. Those first 6 minutes ruined this though.

2/5 (ELIMINATED)
15Erik Satie
Gnossiennes

JohnnyoftheWell
“Gnossiennes I”

Yeah, I’m only listening to the first one. This is very chill, but still manages to keep my attention with a strong melody. I’d even argue that this one is catchy.

3.8/5 (Passed to next round)
16Zoltan Kodaly
Summer Night & Concerto for Orchestra

garas
“Nyári este”

More Gregorian chants. So boring aaah. At least it’s short though!

2.6/5 (Passed to next round)
17Michael Giacchino
Cars 2

ReturnToRock
“Dimensional Fortress” (actually from Small Soldiers (PS1) OST)

Australian didgeridoo influenced video game orchestral? Uh, random, but okay. Now opera? This sounds like a bad mishmash of too many styles honestly.

2.5/5 (Passed to next round)
18Johann Sebastian Bach
Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 in Bâ™ major, BWV 1051

Ryus
“Brandenburg Concerto No.6 in B flat major”

Ah, back to fancy smancy baroque music with harpsichord! This is more emotional than I’d expect from the typically stiff baroque period. I guess that’s why Bach is so loved. A lot of energy here. Yup, this is nice.

3.3/5 (Passed to next round)
19Olivier Messiaen
Turangalîla-Symphonie

GhandhiLion
“Joie du Sang Des Etoiles”

Wow, this one is crazy as hell. Constant crashing and quick notes. This was pretty cool. Not sure if I’d go out of my way to listen to this though.

3.4/5 (Passed to next round)
20Jean Sibelius
Symphony No. 7 in C major, Op. 105

Zig
“Symphony no.7”

So this is cool and all so far, but I wanna make something clear: 20 minute recs are typically not in your favor. Like there’s so much potential for a piece, even with a lot of great elements, so get mad boring like 12 minutes in or something. Right now, 6 minutes in, I’m engaged, this is pretty cinematic and has a grand introduction vibe to it. And here we are around 9 minutes and my attention span took a dive. Is this still going on? 17 minutes in and I feel like I’ve been listening to this for hours. I do like some long songs. Can’s song “Halleluwah” is legit in my top 10 favorite songs of all time, but this... this is just not for me. Maybe I’m just dumb. What is with super long songs and having fake-out endings. Don’t lie to me, song. Thank god it’s over.

2.6/5 (Passed to next round)
21Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
Album

Pangea
Piere-Francois Dufoir and Guillaume Latour - “La Grande Sirba”

Pretty violin and cello. I played cello from 5th-12th grade so I’m kinda a sucker for prominent cello in songs. As with prominent bass guitar. I miss playing cello. Oh I like how the changes in this one still reflect the original theme. It’s a set of variations. Oh wow that part is Presto as hell. Good pick.

3.7/5 (Passed to next round)
22Iannis Xenakis
Psappha

NeroCorleone
Iannis Xenakis - “Psappha”

Weird percussion so far. Ah, so far this is just experimental percussion. Pretty neat actually. I wonder if this needs to be almost 11 minutes, but it’s not boring so I don’t know.

3.2/5 (Passed to next round)
23Colin Stetson and Sarah Neufeld
Never Were The Way She Was

Sinternet
“The Rest of Us”

Really going for the electronic classical fusion here. It’s like some well oiled machine pushing forward, but also feels robotic and uninviting. Not for me.

2.8/5 (+.5 for winning last round) = 3.3/5 (Passed to next round)
