My favorite albums from 2001
1Mogwai
Rock Action

Released 30 April 2001. Not as strong as their hallmark late ‘90s output, but very enjoyable.
2Pete Yorn
musicforthemorningafter

My soundtrack to the summer of 2001, released on 27 March 2001. Every song is killer, a complete album experience.
3 Neil Finn
One Nil

Released internationally on 19 March 2001, but not until 2002 in the U.S., where it included a different track order, and several different songs. As a massive Finn fan, I bought the One Nil CD upon it’s release at J&R music on Broadway in lower Manhattan. This is the definitive release. Maybe not as stellar as his ‘98 solo debut, Try Whistling This, but it’s chocked full of excellent tunes from one of my favorite song writers.
4Elbow
Asleep In The Back

Debut album from what became one of my favorite discoveries from the UK. They would go on to create some seriously great music the next two decades.
5Tool
Lateralus

Not much needs to be said here. My 2nd favorite album from Tool. Can’t wait until August.
6The White Stripes
White Blood Cells

I have a limited version of this from Third Man Records on vinyl. This repress captures them at their lean and hungry best. Some massive riffs on here — Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground & Hotel Yorba pack a 1-2 punch to open the album. Fell in Love with a Girl, We’re Going to be Friends makes this my favorite White Stripes album.
7Incubus (USA-CA)
Morning View

Released in November 2001, this was Incubus at their creative and commercial peak.
8Radiohead
Amnesiac

As a massive fan, I remember my friend gifting me this on CD, and I didn’t really get it or appreciate it until years later.
9The Strokes
Is This It

Superbly tight album. I lived in NYC when the Strokes made it huge, it was a scene. Recommend checking out their MTV2 $2dollarbill concert on YouTube.
10The Shins
Oh, Inverted World

Debut released in the summer of 2001. Some of the songs feel like they’re gonna jump off the record. Some really catchy tunes include Know Your Onion and Girl on the Wing is a personal favorite.
11Stone Temple Pilots
Shangri-La-Dee-Da

Their 5th and most tired record before splitting up. Underrated and overlooked with some good tunes on here.
