Help Modernize Ars

But with shit I'm not going to hate. List are all of the 4-5's I have from 2010-2019. I'll dedicate my April only 2010s albums if you guys pick enough ones I find interesting.
1Janelle Monae
The ArchAndroid

4/5

I like this modern take on psychedelic soul/funk and the meaningful allegory the robotic vs. human society presents. Plus she's full of personality and isn't afraid to dabble in a ton of genres. She also reminds me of that one Erykah Badu album I love from 2008 since they share similar influences.
2Baths
Cerulean

4.5/5

Glitchy, but not jarringly so and with strong poppy hooks. This album is super catchy without trying too hard and no two songs sound too alike. Honestly, one of the best electronic albums I've heard.

I also have Nightly/Daily 4'd, but I don't wanna crowd this list with singles.
3Deerhunter
Halcyon Digest

4/5

Simple musically, but also atmospheric and dream poppy. I like the lyrics a lot on this one. Especially "Basement Scene" because it makes me feel bad, but in an enjoyable way?
4PJ Harvey
Let England Shake

4/5

PJ Harvey is legit my 3rd favorite artist ever, so duh. I tend to be really picky with folky stuff and prefer the stuff with more than just an acoustic guitar.
5Radiohead
The King of Limbs

4.5/5

People who think this is a bad album suck. The percussion on it is amazing on almost every track. The "in a damp forest vibe/theme" the album has is well kept and it's quite frankly one of their weirdest creations. Honestly, I might like it more than OK Computer. That's right I said it! It's moving up to spot #4 on my ranking...

I also have Supercollider/The Butcher 4'd, but I don't wanna crowd this list with singles.
6Primus
Green Naugahyde

4/5

Catchy Primus going back to the roots of their first 2 albums. What's not to love? Quirky, flashy, storytelling bullshit that I eat up.
7Tom Waits
Bad As Me

4.5/5

Don't bother rec'ing me more Tom Waits, I already have the full intention of getting through his entire discography, including rarities and b-sides. Oddball blues-rock stuff.
8Kate Bush
50 Words for Snow

4/5

Kate Bush being super creative and atmospheric. Every song is about snow and most of them are super depressing. Not sure if I want more stuff like this, but maybe?
9The Knife
Shaking the Habitual

4.5/5

Such a diverse electronic album that every song is a different sub-genre (almost?) African synthy rhythms and fun vocals and vocal effects. Political whatever lyrics are thrown in there. "A handful of elf pee" sure Karin. Probably would be my favorite Knife album if "Old Dreams" was half the length.

Also: yes I know I skipped 2012. I have no 2012 albums rated 4 or higher. :(
10Baths
Obsidian

4/5

Not as good as Cerulean, but the darker, gayer lyrics and darker atmosphere certainly rule. It's a good followup, although it doesn't stand out as much as Cerulean.
11Nine Inch Nails
Hesitation Marks

4/5

I feel like a lot of my modern rartings are me finishing up discographies of older artists. This has a lot of catchy tracks on it, and while it isn't NIN's best, I honestly like almost every song on here a lot.
12Casualties of Cool
Casualties of Cool

4/5

I've very uninterested in Devin's more metal stuff, but his country/blues rock album is themetic, contains great vocals form Dorval, and oddly reminds me of CCR at times in a more modern, unique kinda way.
13Perfume Genius
Too Bright

4/5

Good chamber pop stuff that gets really weird in the right places. I didn't like the follow up to this very much since it had WAY too many piano pieces and not enough tracks like "My Body" and "Longpig."
14D'Angelo
Black Messiah

4/5

I like neo-soul when it gets weird. The political lyrics rule and give this focus, but what I really love most about it is the funky offbeats and the bass.
15Hiatus Kaiyote
Choose Your Weapon

4.5/5

Jazzy, soulful, passionate, and lyrically pretty nerdy. It's probably too long and probably has too many transition tracks, but I don' care because it flows super well.
16David Bowie
Blackstar

4/5

What kinda Bowie fan would I be if I didn't like his "I'm suffering and dying from cancer" theme album? Bowie really is a chameleon, incorporating modern styles and mixing them with jazz-rock and post punk.
17Doprah
Wasting

4/5

Cutesy trip hop with percussion that sounds like metal breaking for most of the album, The guy singer on here sucks, good thing the girl usually does all of the singing.
18PJ Harvey
The Hope Six Demolition Project

4/5

Because even one of her less liked efforts still impresses me. Sure, her comments on America are tone deaf, but musically it's so bluesy and even occasionally incorporates psychedelic stuff (like on "A Line in the Sand") so I love it.
19Fever Ray
Plunge

4/5

Honestly, I like this just as much as Fever's debut. It's sparser musically, but is also super catchy and plays around with vocals effects in a great way.
20Nine Inch Nails
Bad Witch

4/5

More NIN, this time taking cues from Blackstar, another album I like. It feels so short, I wish it was longer.
21Mid-Air Thief
Crumbling

4/5

More glitch pop type stuff that uses a lot of folky guitars and contains both male and female vocals that work together in duets. Gives me a retro 60s vibe, but at the same time, it doesn't at all because it's so electronic. Not sure what to make of that.
