| Dir En Grey albums, ranked
This is only my personal ranking, so it shouldn’t be regarded as a definitive ranking, only in my eyes. Over time I’ll probably change the rankings, as I’m wont to change my initial opinions over time. First three are locks though. | | 1 | | Dir En Grey Uroboros
First DEG album I listened to, and still their best, most complete work to date. This album is one of those “rare” albums for me where it’s pefect from start to finish. I love how the music and vocals here evoke an astounding range of emotions. Classic. | | 2 | | Dir En Grey Dum Spiro Spero
I wasn’t initially impressed with this album when it first came out, but subsequent listens over the years helped change my opinion into where we’re at today. A fantastic follow up to “Uroboros”, DSS builds effortlessly of the foundation set by the preceding album. | | 3 | | Dir En Grey Vulgar
For years, this album was my #2 favorite, as it was the perfect bridge between who they were and who they would go on to become, musically. Heavy, dark and unrelenting, this still holds up really well today. | | 4 | | Dir En Grey Withering to Death
Even though this album feels like the band traded in a bit of the previous album’s darkness, it still feels like a logical and natural progression for the band. Many of the tracks found here still are legit bangers today and “Kodou” still was/is a tremendous way to end the album. | | 5 | | Dir En Grey The Insulated World
Unlike others, I enjoyed this album as a whole; it felt like they married the anger of “Marrow Of A Bone” to the progressive leanings found in Uroboros and DSS. Mein Gott, though! that production sucks ass! First time I listened to it, I thought my speakers were dying on me! | | 6 | | Dir En Grey Gauze
The album that started it all. A fantastic midsection can’t QUITE save the opening and closing sections of the album from feeling slightly disjointed from one another, as if the band were somewhat unsure of which direction to commit to. | | 7 | | Dir En Grey Arche
Not quite what I expected as the follow up to DSS, time is softening my feelings towards it. Slightly bloated, it still boasts excellent moments from the members, with songs like “Uroko” and “Rinkaku” being particular standouts. I also love the fact they tied the video of “Revelation Of Mankind” in with “Saku” and “Kodou”. Given time, this might flip with #5. | | 8 | | Dir En Grey The Marrow of a Bone
I honestly didn’t like this album when I first heard it and read most of the lyrics. The passage of time, along with subsequent listens, have allowed me to appreciate it more than before. To me, it feels like the omnipresent anger in this album is only masking a sense of sorrow and pain, almost bordering on the edge of despondency. This is a “rainy day”-type of album for me. | | 9 | | Dir En Grey MACABRE
For the sake of context, I’ve only listened to this 2-3 times over the years, but every time I do I find little to hold my interest. With their “Unraveling” EP putting a fresh spin on some of the songs here, maybe one day I’ll make some time to give it another listen. | | 10 | | Dir En Grey Kisou
I know people like this album, but I just really can’t. It feels too all-over-the-place, stylistically, but when they connect, they really connect. I must say, I do like the seeds they planted in this album. You can tell from certain songs here the mood, sound and direction they would take and experiment further on in their next album, “Vulgar.” | |

11.16.18 | With the utmost respect to you Doc, but different folks, different strokes; when they released the vids for “Rinkaku” and “Sustain The Untruth” I was legit hopeful, but when the album dropped I was a bit letdown, as it felt Kyo was leaning too much on the high cleans that he incorporated into DSS and he lost some range. IIRC, he had surgery on his vocal cords around the time they dropped the “Rinkaku” one take, so with hindsight I can understand if he had some reluctance, but combine my minute quibbles over the vocals with the album feeling bloated, and that’s why it’s that low. Like I said above, with time and more listens,, I might bump it up. | EvoHavok
11.16.18 | He never actually had surgery for the nodules, that's a rumour that got passed on too much.
Kyo's range is still pretty insane on the Arche album, it's just that his increased emphasis on the operatic vocals makes people overlook the solid low notes he does there, such as in "Phenomenon", "Midwife" and "Behind a Vacant Image". | Firedust
11.17.18 | I'll take Arche over the new one any day. | Uzumaki
01.25.20 | After giving “Arche” a re-listen, I think I would flip it with TIW. | heyadam
01.25.20 | Yeah 7 is def a lot higher for me. Love that record |
