RunOfTheMill
08.03.18 | So the movie wasn't bad at all, it was a dramatised and entertaining telling of the story of Euronymous and the early bm scene in Norway. It was pretty funny, often poking fun at Euro's and Dead's maneurisms, and I love that they made Varg look like a total dweeb. There was a shoe-horned romantic subplot that really didn't add anything, but it was really minor that it didn't distract much at all.
Also idk how legal shit works, but the movie had quite a bit of Mayhem and Burzum music (during scenes of them at shows or rehearsing, etc), tho I thought the movie wasn't supposed to have any because none of the bands licensed their music. Background music was usually other old school metal, which was fine. |

08.03.18 | As a fan of all things metal this is on my list. The book is pretty terrible, but was the first written documentation I experienced on the whole Mayhem controversy, so I have a bit of an ambivalent relationship with it |
RunOfTheMill
08.03.18 | Never read the book, but I have heard it is not the most accurate telling of the story. That being said, I'd take the movie with a grain of salt as well - the people in the movie remain characters, though based on the real story and whatnot. The movie was meant to entertain more than anything, and I think it's pretty great if you go into it thinking that. |
RunOfTheMill
08.03.18 | I should note that this was apparently the last time "this version" of the film was to be shown... Idk what that means or what they'll change, I'd be very sad if it had to do with the music in preparation to a wider release. In the end, a lot of the movie was centered around the music and it wouldn't feel right if it wasn't the real stuff |

08.03.18 | The film shouldn't have been made and shouldn't be supported. |

08.03.18 | Here's Varg's take on it:

08.03.18 | Lol I don't think I even need to watch that to know what he thinks |
Deathconscious
08.03.18 | Im sure its riddled with inaccuracies, but im still interested in seeing it. Could be cool. |
RunOfTheMill
08.03.18 | So I watched the Varg video, basically he's right, I don't think anyone should take it seriously or as "what really happened" |
DungeonBoy
08.03.18 | I'd love to hear Fenriz's response to that guy |
dbizzles
08.03.18 | I'll be checking the movie out for sure at some point. Did you just see it at a local theatre? |
SitruK6
08.03.18 | i always heard bad things about it so i never bothered with it.
i have the book Black Metal: Evolution of the Cult (Extreme Metal) By Dayal Patterson and from what i have read its quite interesting |
SitruK6
08.03.18 | oh and if you're into death metal (specifically Swedish DM) be sure to check out the book Swedish Death Metal By Daniel Ekeroth |

08.03.18 | Evolution of the cult is 100 times more informative and better written than lords of chaos |

08.03.18 | I've been dying to know when this thing would be released anywhere (even though I'd have to prob drive 2+ hrs to see it in theaters), so I'm glad someone's seen it by now. Hope it leaks somewhere or goes on digital soon so I can actually cheq it. |
zaruyache
08.03.18 | I got like halfway through Lords of Chaos and quit because it just seemed like the Varg Show. Evolution of the Cult is on my list, but I also bought the Slayer Mag Diaries and barely even cracked that giant tome open lol. |
Deathconscious
08.03.18 | "Idk what that means or what they'll change, I'd be very sad if it had to do with the music in preparation to a wider release"
That sounds likely. According to varg, he, Darkthrone, and Mayhem were asked for rights to use their music and they all said no. |
zaruyache
08.04.18 | back in January, Akerlund said Mayhem had let them use the music bc, basically, the book was a mistelling already so lying in film won't matter now anyway.

08.04.18 | "Did you just see it at a local theatre?"
Ya it was the very last movie of the Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal, my gf won tickets on local radio. It was apparently only shown at Sundance before that?
Thanks for the link zar, I didn't know there was any follow-up to the music licensing disagreement. |
zaruyache
08.04.18 | neither did I. Hoping it gets released more widely since I rly wanna see it. |
Deathconscious
08.04.18 | yeah they'd better put it on netflix or some shit. |

01.20.19 | [Is this topic still relevant?]
Opinions about the official trailer? I would like to watch it, but I'm not sure... |
zaruyache
01.20.19 | looks more like a slightly tongue-in-cheek dramatization, which is absolutely fine by me. I'd rather it be a little goofy than a super srs recreation, especially with American actors speaking English. They need to just put it out on video on demand already. |
DungeonBoy
01.21.19 | watched the trailer.. and not at all what I was envisioning. I'll still see it cause of the unknown Culkin, and really just out of curiosity. |
