11.19.17 | Some good jams here. Dug the write-ups, dude. |
TVC15
11.19.17 | Wish the description boxes didn't have character limits but thanks. Had so much more to say about Motorcycle Emptiness than how awesome it is that it made itself onto a Guitae Hero |

11.19.17 | too bad it was the worst guitar hero |
TVC15
11.19.17 | Yeahhh I'm not really a Guitar Hero kinda guy but it definitely wasn't one of the better GH games I've played |

11.20.17 | From Despair to Where doesn’t make the top 100?
List is binnable. |
TVC15
11.20.17 | Understandable |

11.20.17 | 4 is my fave. Lovely 1984 opening.
|
zakalwe
11.20.17 | Manics have always been an odd one.
I had 44 on single when it came out and dug it. They were ‘emo’ before ‘emo’ and threw self harm, anorexia, anxiety, androgyny, depression and corporate excess in everyone’s faces while we were still loving ‘grunge’
They were bloody big in the UK but always attracted a crowd who were a bit misguided, a bit clueless. The band themselves went shite after Everything Must Go.
|
zakalwe
11.20.17 | The one thing that has always stuck is when they were being interviewed and either Richey or Nicky went on a rant basically calling the journalist a cunt who couldn’t comprehend how a group of lads from a mining town were sharper and more educated than he was.
Fair fucks. |
Papa Universe
11.20.17 | Also, and this is just a personal preference, but Everything Must Do could stand to be positioned higher. |
TVC15
11.20.17 | I'm still getting used to the odd production of Everything Must Go and as much as I love the title track, the instrumentation is too lush to be in mono |
Papa Universe
11.20.17 | I dunno, it seemed like one of the most inpressively consistent and fun albums I've ever heard... |
DoofusWainwright
11.20.17 | The band went shite WITH ‘Everything Must Go’ |
Papa Universe
11.20.17 | You could almost say that Everything DID Go. |
DoofusWainwright
11.20.17 | ‘A Design for Life’ is the best thing on the album and a hard 3 |
TVC15
11.20.17 | The fake-out ending of No Surface All Feeling which consists of pre-existing guitar tracks from Richey is one of my fav MSP moments |
TVC15
11.20.17 | "‘A Design for Life’ is the best thing on the album and a hard 3" 😧 |
zakalwe
11.20.17 | Yeah I’ve known a few people who say it’s their personal best of all time |
DoofusWainwright
11.20.17 | Bradfield has never been a great singer, barely a good one the majority of the time.
Youthful exuberance and not over stretching himself just about afforded him a pass on the first two albums, then Holy Bible he did the weird clipped punk delivery that really worked.
After that he really tries to sing and his efforts range from passable at best to butt awful. Nicky’s song writing is also suspect as far as I’m concerned, he doesn’t half write some dreadfully embarrassing lyrics. |
zakalwe
11.20.17 | I think Bradfields voice is fucking quality. |
DoofusWainwright
11.20.17 | Puttin’ strain in yo game since 1996
I can’t relax listening to him, those high notes are not his friend |
TVC15
11.20.17 | Bradfields voice is fucking quality. [2] hard
But I totally understand where you're coming from Doofbro |
DoofusWainwright
11.20.17 | I love his vox on Holy Bible |
TVC15
11.20.17 | The verse after the Ballard sample on Mausoleum is one of JDB's best vocal performances |
zakalwe
11.20.17 | Yeah P.C.P is prime stuff vox and lyrics.
I dug it out again as a result of this list. Hits hard tbh. |
DoofusWainwright
11.20.17 | ‘Holy Bible’ is very close to a 5 for me, perhaps just hard for me to bump considering I really don’t get on with what followed.
Richey allegedly wanted ‘Sreamadelica’ meets ‘Vulgar Display of Power’ on the next one...instead we got string drenched cobblers like ‘Australia’ |
DoofusWainwright
11.20.17 | Will give ‘Holy Bible’ a run out tomorrow |
zakalwe
11.20.17 | I think he may have been taking the piss doof son |
claygurnz
11.20.17 | Everything Must Go is a great album imo i'm not getting the hate |
DoofusWainwright
11.20.17 | Zak, he was probably only half joking. This is the man who saw his band mates, beanpole Nicky and the little drummer bloke, and thought ‘we can be the next Guns n’ Roses’ 🤣
They wouldn’t have lost their edge anywhere near as quick with him still around though. |
zakalwe
11.20.17 | didn’t he get roped in at some point having been the roadie?
I know a bloke who grew up with Richey said he was clearly ‘different’ and depressed as fuck. |
DoofusWainwright
11.20.17 | He was clearly deluded in a lot of ways, but when he was in the band they seemed like real dreamers, sky’s the limit.
He left and that went with him. The best thing about the band after that was ‘theyre down to earth’. Not an ounce of rock n’ roll magic left in them.
Should have changed the band name after he left.

11.20.17 | Bloke cuts 4real into his arm, writes lyrics of anguish, pain, misery and the soullessness of commodity before fucking off into the river Severn/Oblivion.
Few years later fella hears motorcycle emptiness on guitar hero (the one with the new controller) and loves it.
Funny old world innit.

TVC15
11.20.17 | It's so fuckin funny it's absurd! |
TVC15
11.23.17 | Unique and Doof what would your guys' top 10 look like? |
Papa Universe
11.23.17 | I don't really like dividing artists' work into best and worst songs (of all things), but I can tell you that A Design for Life, Motorcycle Emptiness, The Archives of Pain, Everything Must Go, Blackpool Tier will most likely appear; also, controversially enough, Rewind th Film (the title track). |
DoofusWainwright
11.23.17 | My top 10 would look a lot like the best nine songs off The Holy Bible plus Motorcycle Emptiness really...
Maybe...
1. Yes
2. Motorcycle Emptiness
3. Ifwhiteamerica
4. Mausoleum
5. Archives of Pain
6. P.C.P
7. Faster
8. Of Walking Abortion
9. Life Becoming a Landslide
10. 4st 7lb
Ok, so Life Becoming a Landslide made the cut from 'Gold' too |
DoofusWainwright
11.23.17 | 'Little Baby Nothing' and 'Methadone Pretty' are my next two favourites from 'GT'
'La Tristessa' and 'From Despair to Where' are my next two favourites from 'GATS' |
DoofusWainwright
11.23.17 | I own 'Journal for Plague Lovers' but I really don't like it much at all now. I'll revisit 'EMG' some time but I expect to strongly dislike at least half of it. |
Rowan5215
11.23.17 | william's last words is 1 |
Demon of the Fall
11.23.17 | Doofs top 10 is a hell of a lot more accurate than others I've seen. Manics died with Richey's disappearance. |
zakalwe
11.23.17 | Small Black Flowers That Grow In The Sky would be top 10 for me. |
DoofusWainwright
11.23.17 | I'm being harsh on EMG as I haven't returned to it in years, was sent packing to the second hand store years ago, but I know I don't really need 'A Design', 'Kevin Carter', t/t, 'Australia', 'Girl Who Wanted to Be God'. There are probably three or four decent tunes on there.
'This is My Truth' is an abomination though. |
Demon of the Fall
11.23.17 | Agreed. This is My Truth is terrible. Aimless & tepid song-writing, vacuous & completely devoid of any creativity. I mean, you can tell by the album cover... it looks like MSP were trying to be a boy band. |
zakalwe
11.23.17 | Another manics moment that sticks in the mind is when I first bought Gold Against The Soul and opened the inlay. When I first clocked eyes on the photo of Bradfield belting it out in the studio it had a real impact on me. As comical as the manics can be JDB appeared real deal there.
The albums long since been lost. |
zakalwe
11.23.17 | Just googled it and confirmed photo is absolute class. |
Rowan5215
11.23.17 | dig up some of the b-sides lads
Too Cold Here is top 10 for me |
DoofusWainwright
11.23.17 | Listened to ‘The Holy Bible’ earlier, still quality, ‘Die in the Summertime’ and ‘PCP’ stood out the most that listen. Something still holds it from a 5 but probably my strongest 4.5, something like that. |
DoofusWainwright
11.23.17 | I’ve still got the CD for ‘Gold’ but lost the case and inlay long ago |
Sinternet
11.23.17 | 9 is way too high, 24 is too low, 6 is 1 other than that fairly agreeable list |
TVC15
11.23.17 | My Gold Against the Soul CD doesn't have an inlay, just that dark gray plastic, but I know exactly what picture you're talking about Zak. It's in the lyric booklet and it has definitely stuck with me; always thought it was interesting that JDB has always recorded vox and guitar separately, must be a hell of a job to learn how to sing those songs while playing guitar live.
Agreed Rowbro, the Manics do have some interesting b-sides, although not a lot of them ended up in my list unfortunately.
I like your selections UU and Doof. Rewind the Film's title track barely didn't make this list too, album's got some real highlights. |
TVC15
11.24.17 | Sint what would your top 10 be? |
sheelanagig
11.25.17 | My top 100 would definately include She bathed herself in a Bath of bleach and Patrick Bateman. |
TVC15
11.26.17 | Good choices. Just goes to show how quality I find their discography, top 100 and a lot of great songs still didn't make it |
