Top 100 Manic Street Preachers Songs

I think I've heard these guys' discography enough to give a proper top 100. I'd love to give descriptions but for the few I've done so far, they were much too long for the description boxes. I'll try to add them in time, but what descriptions I got, they're just shortened versions.

Motorcycle Emptiness

As an American, it’s rather hard to truly calculate just how impactful the Manics have been. What crossover success they had, were all but minor airwave plays of their hits… At least, as an 18 year old American, that is what I can most gather from YouTube comments on certain MSP related videos. That being said, a few summers ago, I was hanging out with a friend taking turns playing the latest Guitar Hero; the one where the company replaced the old guitar controller with a new one where the guitar neck now has the six buttons as two rows of three so as to better give the illusion that the player is playing guitar. Anyway, somewhere in the song selection menu where the player can play songs while the screen also displays the music videos, my friend and I were just scrolling through it and amidst the fast scrolling, my eyes miraculously caught sight of a title that I instantly recognized: Motorcycle Emptiness.

A Design for Life

The Manics have always had a tendency to create songs that were stadium friendly; those epic sing along tunes that can get a crowd screaming along. Said tendency is one that truly began to show itself post-Holy Bible when the glam metal aesthetics and dark themes had been fully shed to give way to much less abrasive melodies.

This is exactly what makes A Design for Life such a special song in the band’s catalogue and one that is hailed as one of the band’s crowning achievements. Whatever preconception the listener may initially have with how over-the-top the epic chorus is will give way to utterly genuine and passionate the performance is combined with how beautifully written the song is. It’s unashamedly British yet, most importantly, recognizably a Manic Street Preachers song.

The band members were all lads who hailed from the working class… and what exactly is this song about? The song is a triumph; triumph of overcoming loss and losing a low social status.

P.C.P.

Pass the prozac / Designer amnesiac. “227 Lears… and I can’t remember the first line…”

It was quite the struggle to choose between having the top spot be P.C.P. or A Design for Life. I initially leaned on the latter but I ultimately decided on the former… and for a few reasons:

Energy. That energy. Those angry lyrics and some of JDB’s most pissed off vocals set to tape. What’s really most fascinating, lyric-wise, is how a Welsh band criticizing PC culture in 1994 has become even more relevant today than it did 20+ years ago. But what I love so much about this song is how absolutely catchy the song is combined with the airtight performance by everyone in the band.
