4 Years and a Story

Four years ago today, on February 07, 2013, my family experienced a tragic loss and said goodbye to my big brother. In July of 2013, Misery Signals released their album, 'Absent Light', which leaked right before my brother's birthday. We used to listen to Misery Signals together a lot, and I thought it would be a meaningful experience to download the new album and listen to it for the first time 'with' Travis at his graveside on what would have been his 22nd birthday. I never imagined how incredibly powerful the album would be, and the impact it would have in the context of this scenario. It was like the album was created and released at the time it was for that exact moment...

Just a few weeks after listening to this album for the first time at Travis's graveside, Misery Signals performed in my city. I got to the venue early and had some drinks while the band was setting up. I had the chance to chat with Ryan Morgan, their guitarist, and I told him about my first time hearing Absent Light and why it was so meaningful to me.

Of Malice and the Magnum Heart

During their set, Ryan mentioned that he'd heard my story and before beginning 'Luminary', he told us that "this one's for Kimm and her brother". After they finished the song, he came to the part of the stage in front of where I was standing, and handed me his guitar pick with the Absent Light album art on it. I made it into a necklace and I wear it around my neck almost every day, in memory of my brother and the band that meant so much to both of us.
