| Ranking Bowie (1967-1980)
Not considering anything "objective" just personal subjective preference. :)
Like always my order isn't the typical. | 13 | | David Bowie David Bowie
It's in no way a "bad" album, but it falls under the large category of forgettable 1960s pop that was outdated within a year after it came out... 2.5/5
Favorite Track: Love You Till Tuesday | 12 | | David Bowie Diamond Dogs
I don't understand why people think this is an amazing album. I mean it's above average for sure when it comes to the world of 70s rock, but there are so many forgettable tracks here and it just seems like Bowie has begun to milk the whole glam thing and is ready to move on. It has some great highlights of course though. 3.5/5
Favorite Track: Sweet Thing | 11 | | David Bowie Space Oddity
Well this album is basically just Bowie trying to find his sound as it seems to go in multiple directions, it's pretty great overall, but obviously it has it's fair share of weak points. 3.5/5
Favorite Track: Letter to Hermione | 10 | | David Bowie Young Americans
After an album that I felt showed signs of weakness, (Diamond Dogs) I felt that this album breathed a breath of fresh air into his sound incorporating funk and soul into his sound. Sure it was a good call for him to not make a 2nd funk album, but it's still nice to see what he did with it. 4.0/5.0
Favorite Track: Win | 9 | | David Bowie The Man Who Sold the World
Bowie tries to go hard rock and does a pretty decent job. For the most part, there isn't a single bad song on here, but it's still pretty obvious that Bowie could do better. Hell, though if this were his best album, he'd still be pretty wonderful. It also gets credit for having his first song to talk about his sexuality, which would define his persona. 4.0/5.0
Favorite Track: The Width of a Circle | 8 | | David Bowie Aladdin Sane
I love Bowie's glam era and this is a great example of it, but I just felt that he excelled further after it ended. Regardless, on this album he reached a point in which he became comfortable in his sound, which made for a great album, but one I might even consider playing it safe. 4.0/5.0
Favorite Track: Panic in Detroit | 7 | | David Bowie The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust...
This is most people's favorite and I can understand why. It's an iconic and defining glam rock record and when I first heard it (it was my first Bowie album) I immediately wanted more so much that I listened to Hunky Dory directly afterwards. That said, while it excels for what it is, when it comes to what I love about Bowie, I prefer his weirder side musically, which while amazing, this really isn't. 4.5/5
Favorite Track: Soul Love | 6 | | David Bowie Hunky Dory
At one point this was my favorite Bowie album and honestly, it's easily still my favorite from his early 70s work. I mean he's just so vibrant and original on here and not afraid to say what he believes. 4.5/5
Favorite Track: Quicksand | 5 | | David Bowie Low
I know i'm going to get shit for not putting this in my top 3 since I said I love the weirder side of Bowie, but I think I have a decent reason. While the ambient side is basically perfect, I think there's a weak track or two on the rock side, and oddly enough I kind of wish the rock side was as dancy as the rest of the Berlin trilogy. I just find myself listening to songs from it far less than the other 2... what can I say? 4.5/5
Favorite Track: Breaking Glass / Art Decade | 4 | | David Bowie Lodger
I was expecting this to be so much weaker than it's 2 sister albums in the Berlin trilogy, but honestly, it's just so catchy, warped, and memorable that I can't help from being blown away by it. Whether it's nuclear war or domestic violence, Bowie's topic are still just as interesting as ever. 4.5/5
Favorite Track: Yassassin | 3 | | David Bowie "Heroes"
My favorite from the Berlin trilogy is filled with emotion, is dancey, flowy, and most importantly, there's nothing I could considered flawed on the album from start to finish. 5/5
Favorite Track: "Heroes" / Moss Garden | 2 | | David Bowie Station to Station
Because every song on here isn't just amazing, but a discography highlight. It's actually sort of remincisnet of the Berlin trilogy too honestly. Maybe it should have been called the Berlin Quartet haha... 5/5
Favorite Track: Station to Station | 1 | | David Bowie Scary Monsters
Artsy, daring, unforgiving, and filled with amazing solos. Bowie even had the gaul to bring back Major Tom while finally addressing his own drug addiction. He exposes himself as a societal deviant that managed to make it into the mainstream while even incorporating world problems into the mix... it's overwhelming, it's over the top and it's possibly the best thing he's ever done... well unless I some how prefer one of his later albums once I get to them. 5/5
Favorite Track: Scream Like a Baby | |

09.28.15 | Thought It'd be appropriate to give both a favorite ambient and non-ambient for Low and "Heroes"
I feel like I've been obsessed with Bowie long enough where this is due haha. | Rawmeeth38
09.28.15 | I'd change a few but great list nonetheless | Titan
09.28.15 | Let's Dance is beast | ArsMoriendi
09.28.15 | Well, it's something to look forward too then :) | Titan
09.28.15 | Modern Love is one of my favorite 80's pop tunes | ArsMoriendi
09.28.15 | I actually know 4/8 of the tracks on Let's Dance haha and Modern Love is one of them. | oWhoadYo
09.28.15 | Heroes and low are so great | evilford
09.28.15 | bowie rules | Frippertronics
09.28.15 | 1 is 1 jahgreed
| evilford
09.28.15 | haven't even heard it yet, but I've recently come to the realization that there are several more albums by Bowie that I need to get on. Especially 1, "Heroes" and Lodger | DoofusWainwright
09.28.15 | Top 10
1st Low (5/5)
2nd Station (4/5)
3rd Ziggy (4/5)
4th Aladdin (4/5)
5th Hunky (4/5)
6th Outside (4/5)
7th Scary (3.5/5)
8th The Next Day (3.5/5)
9th Lodger (3.5/5)
10th Dogs (3.5/5)
I'm tough on him, his albums are slightly patchy in places for me. Low's the only one I feel doesn't drop in quality at any point
| evilford
09.28.15 | IT'S TOO LATE | DoofusWainwright
09.28.15 | ArsM - if Scary is your favourite you should give The Next Day a listen, a few tunes have that flavour to them | altertide0
09.28.15 | I think you meant "wish", not "which" in the Low description. Wouldn't agree that Aladdin Sane is a "great example" of his glam era (not too representative, too much artsy exp to simply call it glam). Lodger has all great side 1 and all average side 2. Also would order and rate everything differently. Nice list. | altertide0
09.28.15 | I'd say his only good albums after 1980 are 1. Outside and Earthling but given how high you've rated all of his stuff here I think you'd like most of it & surprised you haven't heard it yet. | Frippertronics
09.28.15 | Heathen tho | ArsMoriendi
09.28.15 | Why is Lodger so underrated? I love side 2 of it too honestly, even if Side 1 has the top 2 tracks. | Frippertronics
09.28.15 | it's rather underrated for the lack of the stuff that made Low and "Heroes" so memorable - the ambient tracks. | ArsMoriendi
09.29.15 | Yeah, but it has so many good songs, especially African Night Flight, Yassassin, an DJ.
I am a DJ, I am what I play! | wham49
11.01.15 | I like the earlier Bowie, so this would kind of be flipped, that is what is great about him, different era, same great music, just personal pref. I would say Hunky is 1 for me, also love Man who sold, space Oddity | YeezyStardust
01.02.16 | Diamond Dogs is a masterpiece, idiot.
| ArsMoriendi
01.02.16 | It really isn't even close to being a masterpiece. Your hostility matches your terrible Kanye themed username though. | Frippertronics
01.02.16 | don't be a dick buddy | Rowan5215
01.02.16 | Scary Monsters in 1st place is good gj
Blackstar would probably fit about where Aladdin Sane is based on first two listens | Anthracks
01.02.16 | 1. diamond dogs
2. aladdin sane
3. scary monsters
4. station to station
5. ziggy stardust | ArsMoriendi
01.02.16 | My only update is that if I were to put Let's Dance on this list it'd be 3/5 between the debut and Diamond Dogs. | Frippertronics
01.02.16 | outside tho | DoofusWainwright
01.02.16 | yeah, Outside and Blackstar will need to gatecrash this list ArsM
Still think you'd quite like The Next Day and maybe Heathen too | Frippertronics
01.02.16 | He'd like the 90s stuff, if he bothered to check them tbh | WilhelmBlack
01.08.16 | T1. Ziggy Stardust (This has really grown on me a lot)
T1. Low (I cannot decide between these two albums at all)
3. Station To Station
4. Scary Monsters
5. Hunky Dory
6. The Man Who Sold The World
7. Blackstar
8. Aladdin Sane
9. Heroes
10. Lodger
11. Young Americans
12. The Next Day
13. Let's Dance (Side One is kickass! Side Two is a mess.)
14. Diamond Dogs (I agree, it is somewhat forgettable)
15. Earthling
16. Space Oddity
17. Heathen
18. 1.Outside
19. Tonight
20. Pin-Ups
21. David Bowie
22. Never Let Me Down
These are the ones I have listened to in full. 90's Bowie is probably the worst Bowie to be honest. He only released 1.Outside and I cannot get into it. I know Frippertronics will castrate me for saying that. I prefer 60's Bowie and he had one horrible album and one meh album being Space Oddity over 90s Bowie. My favorite Bowie era are either his androgynous era or his Berlin tetralogy era. | DoofusWainwright
01.08.16 | WB - on your ranking for me Outside is way too low and TMWSTW waaaaaay too high
I'd pretty much just switch those two, the rest of the ranking isn't bad | Frippertronics
01.08.16 | Blackstar at 7? No way dude. | zakalwe
01.08.16 | If ziggy isn't a classic absolutely nothing is. | Rowan5215
01.08.16 | Scary Monsters > | WilhelmBlack
01.08.16 | Ziggy is too low man, I love Blackstar more than Aladdin Sane and Heroes but that is probably going to change overtime. I have tried to like 1.Outside but it is hard for me to like that album. I would love to do so because Fripp loves it and considers it to be one of his best albums. I absolutely adore the weirdness that is The Man Who Sold The World. Fripp is going to have me by the balls no matter what my opinion is about Bowie. | Frippertronics
01.08.16 | " I would love to do so because Fripp loves it and considers it to be one of his best albums."
not really, one of his better 90s album imo
"Fripp is going to have me by the balls no matter what my opinion is about Bowie."
chill dude | WilhelmBlack
01.08.16 | I am just having some fun. I thought you thought that was one of his best albums. Do you have a list of your favorite Bowie albums for me to compare to? The thing about Bowie is that no two lists are the same, he is an artist that a lot of people fight over. | Frippertronics
01.08.16 | Not yet, or ever I think. Maybe on a day when I'm bored I'll put one up.
Top 5 however at least would be:
1. Scary Monsters
2. Hunky Dory
3. Low
4. Station to Station
5. "Heroes" | osmark86
01.08.16 | Low tops it for me | WilhelmBlack
01.08.16 | Not even Ziggy is on your top 5 list? That list is similar to mine but no Ziggy? | Frippertronics
01.08.16 | Eh, the 2-5 slots are really interchangeable. Ziggy is great, but if I had to choose on what to take with me on an isolated island, I'd rather take something like Station to Station or Low. | WilhelmBlack
01.08.16 | At least you have the guts to admit that to be honest. My dad's favorite by Bowie is "Scary Monsters..". I include the two dots that are found on the LP version of the album. | wham49
01.08.16 | width of a circle is awesome | WilhelmBlack
01.09.16 | Yes, yes it is. Listen to King Missile. | ArsMoriendi
01.09.16 | I still stand by the 76-80 Bowie being his best era. | WilhelmBlack
01.09.16 | It probably is besides Ziggy. | WilhelmBlack
01.09.16 | Bowie was so cute during the "Lodgers" era so you might be right. |
