07.21.15 | List is just random albums off the top of my head that benefit from their bass-playing.
Also, I'd mostly be using these with my iPhone or laptop, neither of which are hi-fi music players so that's not necessary. Preferably keep it something fairly portable, I'm a college student so something I could carry around for use with my iPhone would be nice. |
BandNewbac
07.21.15 | audio-technica is pretty much as good as you can get for that price range
|
BandNewbac
07.21.15 | The M40X headphones are great |
SCREAM!
07.21.15 | Just get whichever sennheiser model comes closest to your budget |
SCREAM!
07.21.15 | Also lol at Apple earbuds being decent quality
You are about to be awakened |
climactic
07.21.15 | ^ eh. i had the 280 pros a while ago and wasnt impressed. those are like $120+ i think
now i have momentums and love them to death though |
RadicalEd
07.21.15 | I agree with Scream, at least if your strictly talking about earbuds, when it comes to big headphones i prefer some other companies, but sennheiser earbuds are unbeatable, especially when you look at the price-quality ratio. |
JWT155
07.21.15 | May be a tad bit over $100 but the Audio Technica ATHM50 are fantastic, use them everyday at work. |
BandNewbac
07.21.15 | Yeah i swear by audio technica |

My bro had a pair of big sennheiser headphones that he got for really cheap (under 50$ I'm pretty sure) and I was really surprised by how great they sounded given the price. Not super familiar with their higher end models though
Personally I've been using a pair of Klipsch Image over ear as my "good" headphones and they've been serving me very well for a few years now along with some Sony earbuds for when I need something smaller that I can be less careful with |
JWT155
07.21.15 | I have a pair of Sennheiser HD598's that are great as well but are open ear. |
emester
07.21.15 | If your looking for the better headphone in just sound quality especially for metal and rock id go with the grado sr80e. These headphones arent really made for portable use and they can be quite uncomfortable at first. If you want a headphone that is great all around then yeah any of the ATH M series headphones from Audio Technica have u covered. I prefer the m50x's. For portable headphones tho i have the V-moda m80's which are actually really good headphones for what you pay. Helps that they are extremely durable |
LotusFlower
07.21.15 | Technicas and M40X are probably your best bet, or if you wanna be a pleb like me you can always get Skullcandy Crushers just so you can feel your head shake. |
elcrawfodor
07.21.15 | Should probably clarify I'd like over the ear phones, not earbuds, and something that doesn't leak much noise |
FacelessMan
07.21.15 | sennheiser hd 558 |
Wafflez
07.21.15 | My first pair of cans were a pair of Creative Aurvana Live, I honestly think it's a great beginners headphone because it's really easy on the ears, comfy as hell too.
They probably aren't the absolute best by most peoples standards but if you're having trouble choosing what kind of sound you want or afraid of choosing something with a really agressive sound you could try it.
Also if you have the time I'd really suggest lurking head-fi a bit, they have a lot of helpful suggestions and guides for almost all price ranges |
BlueW
07.21.15 | second hand ath-m50s |
Feather
07.21.15 | Anybody know anything about Sennheiser Momentums? They look really cool and I found a pair for 100. |
BennyTheMetalHead
07.21.15 | AKG 240s are great, and around $80 on amazon, plus they come with a detachable cable, which is great in terms of your headphones lasting a long time because headphones usually break because of something in the cord. |
emester
07.21.15 | Demoed the Momentums on ears at an airport once. Even though it wasnt the ideal enviroment (airports are loud), the senns were pretty good. A bit bassy tho |
Feather
07.21.15 | V MODA M80 versus Sennheiser Momentums
both are about a hundred dollars and I really like the look of both of them. Any opinions on which ones I should get? |
NLD
07.21.15 | M40x are what I use and are great for the price range. If you're at all interested in an attachable mic for gaming though the Hyper X clouds go on sale for that price sometimes and are the most comfortable headset I've ever tried and they still have really nice sound quality. |
emester
07.21.15 | Modas got a pair myself and their my go to travel headphones that arent in ear |
elcrawfodor
07.21.15 | Sennheiser seems to be the brand being thrown around the most, and they have lots of stuff on sale at Amazon. How does metal in particular sound on them? I've heard they're great for acoustic stuff but for heavy distorted music how do they hold up? |
elcrawfodor
07.21.15 | Either that or the ath-m50s, those have been rec'd a lot too |
Feather
07.21.15 | I should have clarified that I don't listen to metal [check pie chart if that makes a difference for you] |
Bromero
07.21.15 | Audio Technica MH-50X are the ones to get
Those are what I have and I love them. Super clear and balanced sound |
TalonsOfFire
07.21.15 | Some of the newer Apple earbuds have pretty great sound quality actually. Not amazing or anything, but better than most cheap earbuds you'd find at some electronics corner store |
elcrawfodor
07.21.15 | Talons is right, the newer ones had a significant boost in quality so I've been fine with them |
SCREAM!
07.21.15 | I'll take your word for it then. Haven't used them in quite a while and I remember them being pretty cheap and shitty |
Feather
07.21.15 | I like the mobility of the V Moda but I am a little bit put off by most people saying that they are more catered to hip hop and edm than the momentums which seem to be more cross genre. |
judasgoat
07.21.15 | Audio Technica MH50X + FiiO E6 headphone amp
You will never need another pair again. |
judasgoat
07.21.15 | Until the headphones die out after a few years. Then get another pair. Ad infinitum. |
JWT155
07.21.15 | Depending on the device a Headphone Amp prob isn't needed. |
ZombicidalMan
07.21.15 | any headphones that excel at one style of music aren't worth buying imo. you want something that sounds good no matter what you're listening to
I'd second the MH50X, as well as the sennheiser momentums. AKG make some great headphones, too. For your budget, I'd go for the K 240s, which have a detachable cable and a 1/4" adapter. They're very neutral and more for studio use, but they're comfortable and sound great regardless |
Feather
07.21.15 | what is the difference between mh50 and mh50x? |
Feather
07.21.15 | actually the ATM-H50s sound awesome. I think that is what I will be getting. Thanks. |
JWT155
07.21.15 | Excellent choice. |
Ignimbrite
07.21.15 | RHA MA750
Actually $120, but incredible build quality and awesome sound. |
elcrawfodor
07.22.15 | Ended up going with the ATH-M50x, thanks for the recommendations guys! |
emester
07.22.15 | Great choice man. Those are some very good headphones and well worth the larger price tag |
Bromero
07.23.15 | Awesome choice, you won't regret it! |
kris.
07.23.15 | shoulda saved up a little money and got some HD-598s for $150 on amazon |
JWT155
07.23.15 | HD-598s are great but essentially useless if you plan on using them anywhere in public due to being open ear. |
JWT155
07.23.15 | I like the Grado's but I find them uncomfortable for extended listens. |
elcrawfodor
07.23.15 | Guys c'mon I already ordered them no more rec's haha!
They'll be here in a few hours though, pretty excited |
elcrawfodor
07.23.15 | So Rush, my favorite band of all time, sounds even more incredible now. Thanks for helping me pick guys, really digging my first impressions of these! |
kris.
07.24.15 | "HD-598s are great but essentially useless if you plan on using them anywhere in public due to being open ear."
yea thats why i have a pair of 439s for out in public, theyre cheap and sound great. the 598s stay at my computer |
ParanoidAndroid96
07.24.15 | I love my AKG-K240s. I would definitely recommend them and they're under 100$ still, I believe |
