06.21.15 | As Lovecraft puts it: "The dog appeals to cheap and facile emotions; the cat to the deepest founts of imagination and cosmic perception in the human mind."
But truly, although that quote might be a bit overblown, I'd take cats over dogs without any hesitation whatsoever, because of their absolute beauty and grace. It's largely false, in my opinion, that cats are completely detached and indifferent toward their owner, it's just that they are self-sufficient and independant, which I don't see as a flaw, personally.
Lovecraft has actually written a whole, slightly pretentious essay on the matter, an interesting and amusing read: https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Cats_and_Dogs |

06.21.15 | If your cat isn't reclusive, well, good for you. Almost every cat I've been around didn't want anything to do with people. As opposed to dogs in which always wanna say hi to you and hang around you. Everytime a dog comes up to greet me happily my heart just turns to a puddle of goo lol |

06.21.15 | "It's largely false, in my opinion, that cats are completely detached and indifferent toward their owner, it's just that they are self-sufficient and independant, which I don't see as a flaw, personally."
Yea cats are misunderstood creatures. Since they are solitary, their evolutionary history hasn't equipped them with overt ways of expressing their emotions. Whereas dogs make their state of mind known by making a lot of noise, drooling, humping the pack leader's leg etc, cats have very subtle gestures, but that doesn't mean that they don't have rich inner lives or that they aren't affectionate towards people they deem worthy.
Also, cats consider eye contact a sign of hostility, so if you've ever e.g. looked directly at a cat and smiled, and the cat has stomped away in disgust, it's not an act of derision; the cat simply thinks that you've got shit social skills and that you're probably an idiot. The way to befriend unfamiliar cats is to blink your eyes very slowly (an expression of trust). If the cat returns the gesture, you have its approval |

06.21.15 | so i guess we can put you down for cats then |
PlatonicMushroom
06.21.15 | Well I like dogs too, at least some of the calmer breeds. My grandma used to have one of those dogs that are used for hunting moose and it was pretty smart and chill. They seem to drop dead of cancer every few years though and i personally couldn't take the pain of ownership. Cats keep it strong for an average of ~15 years
so yeah, cats>>>
