| These Aren't Your Top 10 II: Nine Inch Nails
They're mine! Requested by Parallels. This list was really hard to narrow down, but 1 is and always will be 1. | 10 | | Nine Inch Nails Hesitation Marks
"Various Methods of Escape"
To me, this was true strong point on Hesitations Marks. A perfect little pop song on Trent's most electronic album yet. The vocal effects are unsettling and the beat is extremely catchy. The lyrics also serve as a great epilogue to his previous drug addiction. Should have been a single, heh. | 9 | | Nine Inch Nails The Fragile
"Into the Void"
I don't know what it is about the persistent beat throughout the song, but damn do I love it. That by it self makes it one of NIN's best. Plus the ending with his self harmonization of the "tryin' save myself, but myself keeps slipping away" and the "wha-ah-oh" just make it so catchy. | 8 | | Nine Inch Nails Broken
"Gave Up"
Since nothing from Pretty Hate Machine made the cut (or Ghosts I-V or The Slip for that matter...) this is the earliest NIN song that'll be on here and honestly as much as I like PHM, Broken was a change in sound for the better. Specifically, the heaviest song on the album, "Gave Up" serves as a hectic and dancey closer that features really cool vocal effects and drums. When it comes to NIN songs being fun, this might be the best he has. | 7 | | Nine Inch Nails With Teeth
"All the Love in the World"
Yet again, another great beat. Not to mention that the end song is a huge and well pulled off buildup. The fact that the song relies on what he does with his voice, rather than a large assortment of lyrics helps keep the song focused on showing off what he can do vocally. Overall, it's just another testament to how Trent really knows how to open an album, I mean if a song from Pretty Hate Machine were to be on here, it'd be "Head Like a Hole" haha. | 6 | | Natural Born Killers Music From And Inspired By The Film
"Burn"
BUM DUM PSH BUM BUM BUM BUM BUM, BUM DUM DUM DUM PSH BUM BUM BUM BUM BUM. Probably one of the most nerve-racking openers to a NIN song I can think of. With opening lyrics like "this world rejects me" any NIN fan already knows it's going to be a crazy one. Speaking of which, the second half of the song is just fast paced madness that ends up fizzling into obscurity, just like many of NIN's best songs. Another perfect buildup. | 5 | | Various Artists Tomb Raider: Original Soundtrack
"Deep"
I don't know what it is about this song, but ever since I first heard it, it's been one of my favorites. The lyrics are almost literal as they being "pushing throw" as it goes "deep"er into the song. The song is simple, yet powerful. It sounds the perfect song for an action movie in every way without being cheesy. No wonder so many people want Trent to write soundtracks for their movies with perfection like this existing.
And have you guys seen the music video for this song? Trent and some black chick are covered in green slime throughout for some reason. | 4 | | Nine Inch Nails The Fragile
"Somewhat Damaged"
I remember seeing Trent perform this live during the Hesitation Marks Tour and I was happy to see that I wasn't the only person in the crowd who knew all of the lyrics as basically every shouted them at the top of their lungs. For a song about kicking heroin, it sure is catchy, hell it's clearly even a fan favorite. The metallic ring of the guitar and bouncy drums are distinct and memorable as hell and overall this song is easily my favorite moment in the honestly overlong The Fragile. | 3 | | Nine Inch Nails The Downward Spiral
"Mr. Self Destruct"
Who's top 10 isn't this one in though, seriously? The song has an explosive beginning, a really creepy and mellow middle, and an all over the place ending, so typical NIN, right? Well maybe, but I feel like this song was the beginning of an era and one of his best examples of the formula. Plus, like a ton of his other songs on TDS, it's about heroin addiction which gives it the necessary depth its trying to attain. Plus, its chorus is probably the best NIN chorus in existence. | 2 | | Nine Inch Nails The Downward Spiral
"Piggy"
Sure I knew "March of the Pigs" "Closer" and "Hurt" for years, but it wasn't until I heard this song for the first time that I actually decided to give NIN a full on try (I was about 14 at the time I think?) Something about the song's mellow, yet somehow still crazy and dark atmosphere drew me to it. Plus Trent's drum solo (supposedly the first time he played drums on a track ever) is kind wonderful in every way. Those haunting keys at the end are pretty wonderful too. | 1 | | Nine Inch Nails Year Zero
"The Warning"
I have a personal connection to the entire album that goes beyond just enjoying it and "The Warning" ends up being the stand out. The entire instrumentation to the song perfect, whether it's the smooth sounding guitar, or the fuzzy electronic beat loops.
More importantly, back when I was 15, less than a month from being 16... who am I kidding I know the exact date (January 27th, 2012) Year Zero was my favorite album and I decided to listen to it to encourage me to finally come out as gay (I'll be honest, I wanted to get it over with so I resorted to doing it through a Facebook post, which seems silly now, but it was so stressful back then.) So I decided that if I made it through the entire album without posting my coming out, that'd I'd just chicken out. Then of course I got up to "The Warning" with its lyric "Your time is tick-tick-ticking away" (which still hits me to this day) and was like "FUCK IT I'M DOING THIS!" and the rest is history. I'm so lame lol. | |

06.03.15 | "The Warning" is the worst track on Year Zero and "Deep" is just terrible, but the other choices I can understand and respect. | DrGonzo1937

06.03.15 | ""The Warning" is the worst track on Year Zero"
Listen to it again please, it's actually perfection. | altertide0
06.03.15 | I did, but it looks like the idea of a 10-second loop being repeated throughout the whole track albeit on different instruments still doesn't convince me. | altertide0
06.03.15 | Also "Mr. Self Destruct" and "Somewhat Damaged" are NOT about heroin AT ALL.
"like a ton of his other songs on TDS, it's about heroin addiction" TDS is not about heroin too. | ArsMoriendi
06.03.15 | "t looks like the idea of a 10-second loop being repeated throughout the whole track albeit on different instruments still doesn't convince me."
That's what's cool about it though, it's catchy (due the loops) and fuzzy and foreboding.
Also "Mr. Self Destruct" is obviously about heroin. It's about how his self-hate led him trying heroin to ease the pain. Eventually his heroin addiction basically consumed his thoughts which was a result of his already self-destructive lifestyle. It can be interpreted to be about other destructive things in his life as well, but heroin was definitely a huge part of it.
The entire album has recurring themes self-abuse, drug addiction (which is a prominent part of that abuse), weird sexual urges, and trying to curb all of this in an attempt to control his life. | Parallels
06.03.15 | >Gave Up

06.04.15 | Thank you Parallels and Supercoolguy! :) | WilhelmBlack
01.08.16 | You are gay? I seriously listened to Nine Inch Nails a lot to cope with my sexuality when I was 15. That is awesome that you had the same experience with Nine Inch Nails, I am openly gay myself and I didn't know that about you. You are like 2 months older than me by the way. I would probably have almost a completely different list but I would do like 20 songs instead. I love Nine Inch Nails. |
