| Personal Picks: My 20 Favorite Soundgarden Songs
With the recent release of the rarity and b-side compilation: Echo of Miles: Scattered Tracks Across the Path, which enhanced the sound quality of a slew of Soundgarden songs, I felt like making a list praising Soundgarden. Like my other favorite lists, being a "hit" or being generally loved by the fan base is not considered in the ranking, just my personal opinion. | | 20 | | Soundgarden King Animal
"Rowing" My affection for King Animal fades upon each new listen, but this will always be a standout. Soundgarden was always amazing at making slowed paced heavy hitting tracks and this seems to still ring true on their come back album. | | 19 | | Soundgarden Down on the Upside
"Blow Up the Outside World" Anyone who's talked about Soundgarden with me on here knows that Down on the Upside is my favorite release of theirs and this track is one of the many reasons why. The dynamic changes are so powerful and Cornell's vocal emotion really makes this song one of their greatest. It's also has one of their most epic endings. | | 18 | | Soundgarden Echo of Miles: Scattered Tracks Across the Path
"Birth Ritual" This song is about as bare bones are Soundgarden is ever going to get and quite possibly one of the best doom themed masterpieces they've ever made. Plus that guitar solo at the end is so entertaining. | | 17 | | Soundgarden Badmotorfinger
"Slaves & Bulldozers" I initially thought this would be higher on the list due to how epic it is, but somehow I adore about as much as "Birth Ritual" and for very similar reason. Cornell's vocals are even more powerful on here though, hence the higher ranking. | | 16 | | Soundgarden Ultramega OK
"Beyond the Wheel" U-OK gets a lot of hate on here and although I understand why, it's kind of a shame. Especially since this track has an incredibly creepy, yet trippy atmosphere that sucks you in. | | 15 | | Soundgarden Superunknown
"My Wave" Most of the hits on Superunknown never really struck me as their best. However, this song is an exception. A straight forward riff with very straight forward lyrics keeps the song simple, but also fun in an anthem type of way. | | 14 | | Soundgarden Down on the Upside
"Never the Machine Forever" This song always makes me think of a gigantic robot rampaging through a town destroying everything. By having one of Cornell's craziest vocal performance, I find it surprising that this isn't more of a fan favorite. Plus that psychedelic chorus is sweet. | | 13 | | Soundgarden Down on the Upside
"Rhinosaur" About a year ago, I'd argue this to be top 5 Soundgarden, but my appreciation of it has faded due to overplaying it. Awesome riffs, pickup, and solos still make it one of my favorites from DotU. | | 12 | | Soundgarden Badmotorfinger
"Outshined" Soul crushingly slow paced emotion topped with memorable lyrics, perfect riff and a perfect bass line. What else could I ask for from Soundgarden? | | 11 | | Soundgarden Screaming Life
"Hand of God" From their most underrated release, this song is humorous and fun, even if it's simple. What makes it so great compared to other songs? Honestly, Kim's solo at the end. | | 10 | | Soundgarden Louder Than Love
"Gun" I find Louder Than Love to be incredibly overrated and other than King Animal and Fopp (if Fopp even counts?), it's honestly my least favorite release of theirs. A lot of the songs are good, but fails to really push themselves into greatness. In comes this song, which contains some of the best lyrics of any Soundgarden song coupled with a great speedy pickup. "Ugly Truth" would have been 21 on this list anyway... | | 9 | | Soundgarden Echo of Miles: Scattered Tracks Across the Path
"Kyle Petty, Son of Richard" Why didn't Soundgarden make more songs like this? They go heavy on the echoey effects and turn the distortion up all of the way while Kim plays what is probably my 3rd favorite riff in their entire career. The fact that this never made it onto a studio LP is a shame. | | 8 | | Soundgarden Superunknown
"Mailman" Depressing, powerful, spiteful, and grudge holding, this track slowly builds up to a satisfying and explosive end. | | 7 | | Soundgarden Down on the Upside
"Pretty Noose" My favorite Soundgarden opener is one that reminds its listeners that Down on the Upside is in no way weaker than it's predecessors. In fact, it's powerful as hell in all respects vocally and instrumentally. It has some of Soundgarden's best bass in it as well. | | 6 | | Soundgarden Ultramega OK
"Head Injury" Without a doubt my favorite song on U-OK. It's a fun violent little punk song that just makes you want to move. It was always such a big standout due it's pace. | | 5 | | Soundgarden Badmotorfinger
"Holy Water" Now back to my point about slow paced heavy hitting tracks. This is without a doubt the best on BMF for me due to how it really wraps together the emotion of the entire album. | | 4 | | Soundgarden Down on the Upside
"An Unkind" This used to be my favorite. The heavy vocal effects and and the odd screaming vocal solo make this one of Soundgarden's oddest, which is refreshing and really shows how willing the are to experiment. "Applebite" is a grander slower paced example of their experimentation, and although it's not my favorite, it gets too much hate honestly. It's nice that they mixed things up on DotU, does anyone really want more of the same? | | 3 | | Soundgarden Screaming Life
"Little Joe" This contains some of Cornell's oddest vocals and lyrics. They're very well pulled off though and it contains another awesome Kim solo. I feel like it's so up here though due to personal reasons of enjoying their weirder side since it's not particularly impressive technically or atmospherically. Still, it's a big reason why Screaming Life is essential for any Soundgarden fan to hear. | | 2 | | Soundgarden Superunknown
"Limo Wreck" Another slowed paced heavy hitting track, but this time Cornell plays the villain to wonderfully produced music and amazing riffing. Clearly Soundgarden reached a huge peak on this track. | | 1 | | Soundgarden Down on the Upside
"Tighter & Tighter" This song highlights everything I love about Soundgarden. Cornell mixes cool vocal effects without his powerful and emotional wails to slow crushing guitar and bass lines. Not only does this have my favorite Soundgarden solo ever, it ends it a huge jam. | |

11.27.14 | 20/20 artwork? Awesome!
Seriously though, check out Echo of Miles: Scattered Tracks Across the Path, the production on it is so clean and it reminded me of some rarity favorites, plus there's a couple never before released tracks on it.
