| Top 10 Favorite Zappa Instrumentals
So I tried thinking of all of my favorite Zappa instrumentals, and the list rwas over 20 songs... rrrrrso please don't take this lightly it was a hard decision. | | 10 | | Frank Zappa Sheik Yerbouti
"Rat Tamago" This has from a solo for "The Torture Never Stops" and manages to be nearly as good. So much shredding. It's an interesting breath of fresh air on such a humor-based album. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuDLlgRuI6Y | | 9 | | Frank Zappa Jazz from Hell
"G-Spot Tornado" This one is all computer music on a device called the synclavier. Most of the album is like this, and G-Spot Tornado is the biggest highlight.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUvH3xf0e-I | | 8 |  | The Mothers of Invention Burnt Weeny Sandwich
"The Little House I Used to Live In" An 18 minute thrilling battle between guitar and violin. Spoiler: the violin wins. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMTpSz6OVe8 | | 7 | | Frank Zappa The Grand Wazoo
"Eat That Question" This album is fantastic, but no track on here is more fantastic than this jam. So memorable and original. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jymHINLcjlw | | 6 | | Frank Zappa The Man from Utopia
"We Are Not Alone" The Man from Utopia is a very inaccessible album that is nearly impossible to get into for non-Zappa fanatics, this however is an incredibly accessible and fun as hell jazz instrumental that almost seems out of place.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDW5uwMscUA | | 5 |  | Frank Zappa Hot Rats
"Peaches en Regalia" Most people know that this is one of the coolest instrumentals ever, Zappa may have better, but just barely. Jazzy, weird, and just wonderful.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGQxI0G6mKk | | 4 |  | The Mothers of Invention Uncle Meat
"King Kong IV (The Gardner Varieties)" Now all 6 King Kongs are great, but this one surpasses the rest by a mile. Fleshed out and fuzzy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=FD5kTEf8Rd0 (contains all 6) | | 3 |  | The Mothers of Invention Absolutely Free
"Invocation & Ritual Dance of the Young Pumpkin" 7 minutes of jam. Crazy guitar and saxophone everywhere. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gw2qqcsxlE | | 2 | | The Mothers of Invention Roxy & Elsewhere
"Echidna's Arf (Of You)" Without actually having vocals (save the half of a sentence at the beginning) this ends up being silly as hell, yet complex and original. Show-offy guitar is in all of the right spots. Plus those horns. https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=NeCGm8VipUU | | 1 |  | Frank Zappa Sleep Dirt
"The Ocean Is the Ultimate Sollution" I'm a sucker for Zappa's show-offy style, which is on steroids here, or should I say cocaine due to its speed. Same goes for the bass, which is as heavy as ever. The drums are sweet as hell too.

06.17.14 | Good list, with descriptions and links and all, doesn't leave you hungry | ArsMoriendi
06.17.14 | @Skull: Thanks!
For anyone one here who loves Zappa's talent at composition and playing, but not his humor or voice, these should be of interest to you. | demon of surveillance
06.17.14 | really need to listen to him a lot more, ive got all of his more highly rated material (>3.5 on here or ProgArchives) downloaded but ive only listened to Hot Rats in full
absolutely fantastic though | Friday13th
06.17.14 | nice list. Congrats on the feat, Ars! | scottpilgrim10
06.17.14 | Congrats on the feat, Ars! [2] | Jethro42
06.17.14 | Great list. 7 rules hard, 5 as well. I probably know King Kong IV too and I need to check the rest. | sleepdirt
06.18.14 | Make it a top 100 list. | Veldin
06.18.14 | Why does Sleep Dirt have such a low average? It's definitely in the top 10. | ArsMoriendi
06.18.14 | @Fripp: The entire composition? Probably would bump it up to no. 2. "The Ocean Is the Ultimate Solution" is just a bit better in my opinion.
Also "The Gumbo Variations" would deff make my top 20. | ArsMoriendi
06.18.14 | Whoops deleted my last comment^ on mistake so I reposted it.
@Veldin: I don't know about top 10, but I have it 4'd.
@sleepdirt: That would require me using stuff from Guitar, which doesn't sound like a fun list to make... I almost made this a top 20, but I decided against it. | YakNips
06.18.14 | 1 list a day please | ArsMoriendi
06.18.14 | "Just make a top 20 Zappa/Mothers solos list next or something"
Ooh, that's tempting.
"1 list a day please"
This is my only list today so I have no idea what you're talking about. | Muisc4Life26
06.18.14 | Sweet list Ars :D | BMDrummer
06.18.14 | One time I did it Slip It In by Black Flag, that outro. Sweet list though Ars, I'll use this as a bit of a guide on Zappa's instrumental stuff. | TronaldDump
06.18.14 | fucking love 5 and 3 | ArsMoriendi
06.18.14 | @Muisc: Thanks, dude! | DrGonzo1937
06.18.14 | Fine list, man | Zig
06.18.14 | Great list. I love 5 and 7.
Big Swifty from Waka/Jawaka should be in the list, in my opinion. | bens
06.18.14 | 2 along with "don't you ever wash that thing?" Are the best
Missing gumbo also | SurfWaxAmerica
06.18.14 | I personally would have included "Watermelon in Easter Hay", "Transylvania Boogie", and maybe "Dwarf Nebula Processional March & Dwarf Nebula". That last one just has a really infectious melody that I can never get over. | ArsMoriendi
06.21.14 | "Transylvania Boogie" almost made it. Nice choice dude. The other 2 you listed are cool too. |
