Gyromania: Game Of Thrones Season Finale

Gyromania 06.16.14	i thought it was near perfect
MO 06.16.14	it was pretty awesome. one thing that bums me out is Tyrion didn't tell Jaime about all the guys cersei's slept with. also would've been sweet if lady stoneheart was introduced...it'd take show watchers by storn. all in all a great episode. the hound went out way better than in the books imo (losing to Brienne was very fitting for his character instead of being wounded in a bar brawl)

Judio! 06.16.14	Not one of my favorites from the season, but definitely a great episode all around and a perfect ending. One of my favorite parts about the episode was when Stannis arrived at The Wall. I've never found his storyline to be particularly interesting, but seeing him there with his army was cool as hell and fit perfectly. On another note, seeing Tywin get killed by Tyrion in such a humiliating way was a treat to watch, and those skeleton warriors were fucking sweet.
InfamousGrouse 06.16.14	Kinda bummed that they got rid of two of my favourite characters in one episode. Also wish Littlefinger/Sansa got a little airtime because I'm really intrigued as to where their story arc is headed (no spoilers plz).

Acanthus 06.16.14	This season was the season that made me realize I could actually never finish this show and be ok with it. At this point I'm just apathetic towards all the characters as there's no one that I can completely root for, and this "realism" in morality/circumstance that GRRM uses really doesn't do much for me (especially in what is supposed to be a fantasy setting). It's so focused on showing that the bad characters aren't all bad and the good not all that good that it misses the point of fantasy that I always enjoyed; having fantastical characters. The history of Westeros sounds like it had them, but as the show stands there is no one standout person so far for me, and I fear that by the time they get there my interest and amount of fucks just won't be there. And I'd rather not get started on the stupidity that is Dany and her dragons, she should have seen that coming for months now.

Acanthus 06.16.14	Nah, they're ok characters but just not standouts; the amount of character development these two will need to get them to their final destinations/fates (like to read spoilers/fan theories) will seem really out place imo. It's like the show (and maybe this is the case with the books too, don't know) is going to have to make a shift away from being "realistic" (like it has so far) and change into "these are the guys you should be rooting for" mode and beef up some characters both morally and with plot armor.

Acanthus 06.16.14	I've been having a hard time putting into words what bugs me about them for some time, so I can easily see that (sorry). I don't view their expandability as being inherent or special though, it just makes everyone appear average when we know they're not; it's already been made clear that this isn't a world where the average person can just up and do great deeds, it's a quasi-realistic world where power begets power and the like. So there are going to be a few characters who are neigh-untouchable until the very end, which at some point is going to require them to cast away the whole "anybody can die, no one is safe!" theme that has been hyped so far.

aircycle 06.16.14	honestly lady stoneheart has hardly made an impact in the books so far and who knows if she will or not the tyrion escape part is disappointing because the whole way that goes down is like the best part of the series but there wasn't really any way they could have fully conveyed everything, i think they made do with what they had

Stannis arrival was completely underwhelming; in the books it's like the charge of the Rohirrim, arriving just as all hope seems lost. And of course given D&D hate the Mannis they ruin it by making the wildlings all sympathetic an Stannis have Stannis just rock up and be like sup? And no LSH was just fucking stupid, why omitt a cliffhanger that great? 5/10 worst episode of the series probably. Thanks D&D you cunts.

Deviant. 06.17.14	I really have to agree that this episode was utterly disappointing. I mean sure I was sitting there just waiting for Coldhands to rock up when Bran and the Reeds were stumbling through the snow going "we're never going to make it", and sure I expected Stoneheart to pop up in the finale, and then have her resurrection explained in detail next season. But even just on its own, and pretending to eliminate all the knowledge I have of the books, the episode was a disappointment. Stannis showing up was just anticlimactic. I get that the Watch wouldn't have survived another night, but I don't feel like they conveyed that urgency enough. Also, way to really undermine Oberyn's death by not even showing the Mountain in pain. Clearly he's in a bad way, but the whole point of the Red Viper being the badass swordsman that he was all came down to his use of poison and the agonizing deaths that it caused. The Tyrion escape at the end felt rushed as well; we've basically spent the whole season with him/King's Landing, and yet when he's actually guaranteed to die (found guilty in the trial) they gloss over it by having Jaime just show up then and there. Also, fuck that Brienne/Hound fight. Book stuff: I can't believe they didn't talk about Tysha. Not only does it undermine Tywin's death at his son's hand (though you could argue that Tyrion had more than enough reason to do so anyway), it robbed Jaime and Tyrion of what could have been a fantastic scene, and a heartfelt goodbye. Also, what the fuck making Shae reach for a knife???

Both in name, and with numerous references to Tyrion's first wife. If the show is going to follow Tyrion's story closely and see him turn from being a sarcastic character into the depressed crazy bastard he becomes, the revelation that he excluded from the finale would have gone a long way to make that more believable visually

He despises Cersei for obvious reasons, and he Jaime for lying to him. They even referenced the "thousand AND ONE eyes" line, just to be more annoying! And Leaf looks like a beggar child. They must have blown their budget on the giants and mammoths for ep9, and those magical grenades (?) Leaf had instead of making the character more feline and ethereal

Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of the books, and I agree with you as far as the books version being more compelling, but I don't think one scene and a couple of references later are going to be enough for most viewers to know who Tysha is at this point in the story. Since that time numerous new characters have been introduced. It makes sense for it to have been omitted, even if its a disappointment.

That is not near a good enough motive to kill your father, if it was he would have killed him a long time ago and done it discretely. The entire reason he kills his dad in the books is out of rage of him calling Tysha a whore to his face.

As far as Tyrion's ADWD arc, I see what you're getting at. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

klap 06.17.14	i didn't think stoneheart would be included bc it's probably difficult contractually to get fairley to show up for one 10 second scene in the entire season and 2) the freys are under-developed on the show so no one would know what the fuck is going on and why. i'm sure we'll see her with the brotherhood next season relax and i read the books two years ago and had to go look up the tysha business with jaime bc i totally forgot about that entire scene until everyone was bitching about it. presumably show watchers are well aware of the hatred tyrion has towards tywin and (based off the courtroom scene) everyone else in king's landing enough to fuel his future adventures

Deviant. 06.17.14	It's never actually confirmed that he died. I mentioned this in the other thread, but there's some interesting wordplay surrounding the whole thing. The guy at the monastery talks about "The Hound" being dead, but that Sandor Clegane is at peace. Again they're kind of one and the same, and yet I think there's a purpose as to why it was written like that. Also, the whole thing with Stannis seemed kind of tacked on as well. I love the show, but these guys need to work on their pacing

It's obviously a gargantuan task to adapt this into a show, but I feel like these guys need to get some better time management skills. I mentioned before that Stannis showing up felt rushed. It didn't help that it was halfway through season 3 where Melisandre was trying to convince him to head to the wall. It felt like the opening scene of last night's episode was only there because they simply ran out of time in episode 9. Having it pick up immediately after that episode's ending kind of lessened the urgency of everything, by giving us that week to recover. It kind of robbed Stannis' "victory" of any kind of power

Obviously changes will need to be made; it is a totally different medium than the one GRRM originally created the story for. People like Strong Belwas and Coldhands are going to cut, and that's fine. But when the changes make for a less coherent and logical telling of the story, that's a problem. Sometimes I get the feeling that D&D are constantly trying to outdo GRRM, and show that they can tell his own story better than he can. What they're left with is several characters (Tyrion, Jaime, Cersei, Stannis to a lesser extent) whose actions don't really add up, and especially won't add up with upcoming events."

Kept confusing myself with reading stuff I had already just read and then remembered I had just seen it on the show and vice versa
Sabrutin 06.17.14	Deviant is right. Keep also in mind that the TV series has some differences that I personally don't like (killing side characters that should survive is never a good thing, nor is inventing a random fight).
ResidentNihilist 06.17.14	tbh dev i get what you mean about character inconsistences but I don't think Tyrion killing Tywin was inconsistent simply because how much abuse Tywin had put him through and taking Shae was the last straw. Shae could be construed as an inconsistency but then again she did betray him (court room, sleeping with Tywin) though it doesn't warrant what he did to her.

She's supposed to be like 10 years old and she's already killed multiple people without a second thought. She's heading down a dark road and I've greatly enjoyed getting to watch her develop on-screen. That actress is doing an excellent job.

klap 06.17.14	yeah i've read the books and really have had no problems with how the show has adapted/left out things. dev i realize they can stretch out the seasons as long as they want but frankly i think they care less about the reader of a book who wants to see every little thing and motivation fleshed out than they do about the vast majority of watchers who just want to see the plot progress. inventing fights and killing side characters lol they can do whatever they want if it fits within the realm of the story. it's their show. so who cares if we realize grenn or jojen isn't actually an important character.
Gyromania 06.17.14	i would have to agree with rudy on this one. i've heard die-hard fans complain about series like this or harry potter for not getting details down to a t - stupid, meticulous shit like a duel in the books vs the film and how they didn't cast a certain spell or something. it would be nearly impossible to make a perfect adaptation, and a lot of the changes in the show are stylistic and largely irrelevant to the overall plot (like, as mentioned, the fight between the hound and brienne. if anything, it's a death better fitted for the hound, and certainly a high point in the series). i don't much mind when they make aesthetic changes as long as the plot and characters are still being developed accordingly

klap 06.17.14	i think dev's argument is that the characters in this case are not being developed accordingly (tyrion/jaime, for example), but i think that's a matter of perspective. i saw no problem with how the scene went down bc i felt like the shae in the show is much more developed and has hints of tysha than the one in the book, so that whole sequence of events made sense. tyrion has plenty of other reason to kill his dad to begin with. that's just one way of looking at it of course

But getting back to how much time the writers seem to be allotting to various storylines: if Stoneheart does show up in some form further on down the line, are some of the viewers even going to remember/care about Beric and Thoros?
Yuli 06.18.14	I totally agree with Deviant on many of the crucial plot points of the episode, but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy the finale. I really loved it on the whole. I will say, though, that I thought Jon's episode last week was far more satisfying and well-executed on the whole. I'm a little bummed that the writers only submitted the finale for awards, because I think many other episodes of this season could've done well in that regard.

zaruyache 06.18.14	In the books Jaime tells him that Tysha wasn't a prostitute, meaning that his father did actually order a gangbang on a poor peasant girl just because he's an evil guy and stuff. Then Tyrion goes to his father's chamber to ask what happened to Tysha, and Tyrion kills him. They could've easily added some of the Tyrion/Jaime dialogue into the show. Getting to hear Tyrion destroy Jaime's perception of his sister would've made for a good scene.
Yuli 06.18.14	See, I feel that way about most of Jon's scenes- but for some reason the ninth episode hit the nail on the head for me. While I found myself a little bored with the description of the battle at the wall in the book, the episode sealed the deal for me. I enjoyed seeing it instead of imagining it, especially the particular fights between characters (Tormund vs. Alliser omg)
