Over-nite Sensation/Apostrophe Ranked
Listened to Over-Nite Sensation for about the 30th time probably. Felt like rranking it with rrrrrApostophe (') since they're like sibling albums. |
15 | | Frank Zappa Apostrophe
"Excentrifugal Forz" This is actually a pretty good song, but it's main function is a
transition so it's hard to compare it to the others. It makes it seem "average" compared to the others. 3.5/5 |
14 | | The Mothers of Invention Over-nite Sensation
"Zomby Woof" A pretty entertaining song about a zomby dog thing. Maybe not his most
inspired thematically, but the music is pretty great. 4/5 |
13 | | Frank Zappa Apostrophe
"Father O'Blivion" A fun conclusion to the opening medley. Pretty damn fun actually.
4/5 |
12 | | Frank Zappa Apostrophe
"Stink-Foot" An interesting conclusion to one of Zappa's best. There's a cool solo and
of course one of the best Zappa lines here "The crux of the biscuit is the apostrophe."
4/5 |
11 | | Frank Zappa Apostrophe
"Don't Eat the Yellow Snow"/"Nanook Rubs It" It'd make no sense to rank these two
apart. It's a very silly and memorable story and a Zappa essential, but musically, it's
probably my least favorite on all of Apostrophe ('). The lyrics are brilliant in the silliest
way possible though. 4.5/5 |
10 | | The Mothers of Invention Over-nite Sensation
"I'm the Slime" With a fun riddle at the beginning and Zappa's ominous vocals, this
song is surely a winner. It's probably one of his flashiest songs ever, in a good way.
4.5/5 |
9 | | The Mothers of Invention Over-nite Sensation
"Montana" It almost feels wrong ranking this so low, almost. It's just that everything
higher than this seems to top it for me. It's silly as hell and Tina Turner's backups are
no short of amazing. 4.5/5 |
8 | | The Mothers of Invention Over-nite Sensation
"Dinah-Moe Humm" This song is one of the dirtiest 70s songs ever. Now today,
thousands of songs probably top it there, but that doesn't change the fact that it's still
dirty as hell. The bass line is basically perfect and it's basically one of his funniest
moments. 5/5 |
7 | | Frank Zappa Apostrophe
"Apostrophe" One of Zappa's best instrumentals ever. It's a good rest song from all of
the funny on the album and the instrumentation is just as impressive. 5/5 |
6 | | The Mothers of Invention Over-nite Sensation
"Dirty Love" The chorus to this song is so easy to rock out to. It's extremely catchy,
the guitar is memorable and the Tina Turner is yet again awesome on it. (she does
backups on 5/7 of the songs on Over-nite in case you're wondering.) 5/5 |
5 | | Frank Zappa Apostrophe
"Uncle Remus" Zappa isn't all jokes and crazy instrumentals. When he wants to he can
write a serious emotionally impacting song. His topic here is racism and how we have
partially overcome it, but at the same time, it's still prevalent. The piano and guitar
work together to create a wonderful progression. "Will that redeem us Uncle Remus?"
classic. 5/5 |
4 | | Frank Zappa Apostrophe
"St. Alfonzo's Pancake Breakfast" This song is just as ridiculous as its title. The
marimba, guitar, bass, trumpets and drums work together to create a really
interesting jam. Even if you don't like the silliness, the music is just amazing. 5/5 |
3 | | The Mothers of Invention Over-nite Sensation
"Camarillo Brillo" Zappa really likes his ridiculous lyrics and sex themes. These
contain some of the best examples of both. Plus those guitar fills are so sweet. 5/5 |
2 | | Frank Zappa Apostrophe
"Cosmik Debris" Zappa refuses to buy cocaine from a dealer. He then proceeds to
make a fool out of the dealer. More sweet marimba, trumpets, and guitar. Plus the
bridge is so fun. That's the thing about Zappa's silly stuff, it's so damn fun. 5/5 |
1 | | The Mothers of Invention Over-nite Sensation
"Fifty-Fifty" What can't I say about this song? Crazy vocals and lyrics that teach you
that even the craziest people may have an important message about life. With an
impressive organ solo from George Duke, an even more impressive violin solo from
Jean-Luc Ponty, and an even more impressive guitar shredding from Zappa himself,
this song contains 3 of the best solos in Zappa's entire catalogue. Power pact vocals,
message filled lyrics, and solo ridden instrumentals. Probably one of my favorite
Zappa songs ever. 5/5 |
