09.30.12 | If you like Miles you should check out Herbie Hancock, especially Empyrean Isles. Although you should definitely look at Head Hunters too. Any Thelonius Monk and definitely Mingus.

Bebop/Hard Bop (typical Jazz albums, traditional)
Thelonious Monk- Monk's Dream, Criss Cross, Straight, No Chaser, Misterioso
Sonny Rollins- Movin' Out
Charles Mingus- Mingus Ah Um
Freddie Hubbard- Hub Cap, Ready For Freddie, The Body & the Soul
John Coltrane- Blue Train (MUST HEAR, "I'm Old Fashioned" is my fav song)
Miles Davis- Walkin', Birth Of The Cool (Good place to start for some smooth/cool Jazz)
Jazz Fusion (Electric Jazz/Jazz-rock. This Jazz fused with Prog-rock, psych, Funk)
Weather Report- Sweetnighter (Funky and their most accesible), Heavy Weather
Return To Forever- Light As A Feather (Look into "500 Miles High" and "Spain")
Mahavishnu Orchestra- Birds Of Fire (More rock-influenced than Jazz)
Herbie Hancock- Head Hunters (Funk Jazz), Sextant
Good to see you're interested in Jazz. A lot of people are going to tell you to look into famous albums like Bitches Brew or Meditations- those are very experimental and overwhelming albums, and not instantly accessible but they are great. Just give them time. |

Miles Davis takes a lot of time to set the "mood" of the jam sometimes, and this is why some people cant get into albums like Bitches Brew. But just listen to them and relax, dont think about it too hard. Let yourself get lost in the music and you'll see that it will impact you. |
