Green Day is a Punk Revival/Alternative Rock/Pop-Punk (depending on who you are) band from East Bay,California.Thebandconsists ofvocalist/guitaristBillie Joe Armstrong, guitarist Jason White, bassist Mike Dirnt, and drummer TreCool.GreenDay isarguably the mostinfluential post-Nirvana rock band. The band has listed The Replacements, Husker Du, TheWho,TheClash,The Ramones, The Kinks, TheBeatles, and Operation Ivy all as influences.Originally they were called the Sweet Children, but changed their name to stop confusion with another localbandcalledSweetBaby. Theband began inthe 924 Gilman Street club while the band members were in still in high school.Theyrecordedtheirfirst album,"1039/Smooth"as well as the EPs "1000hours", "Slappy" and "Sweet Children" with thendrummerJohnKiffmeyer.Later the album and EPs were combinedinto the compilation album"1039/Smoothed Out SlappyHours". Thebandreceivedhuge popularity in the underground punk scene as amelodic alternative to the hardcore punkbands atthe time.In1990Kiffmeyer decided to leave the band to go to college. In 1991 former Lookouts drummer Tre Cool joined the band. The band then recorded their next studioalbumtitled"Kerplunk",which furtherpropelled theband into popularity in the underground music scene. Due to the massivesuccessofNirvana's"Nevermind", many record labelswere looking to signsimilar underground bands. Green Day receivedmanyoffersfrom largerecord labels but refused. When the indie-labelLookout! Records was unable tomake enough copiesof"Kerplunk!" tokeep upwith demand it was clear Green Day had far overgrown theirunderground scene. In 1993 thebandsignedwithRepriseRecord, causing former fans to shun them and refer to them as "Sellouts".Riding the commercial success of the singles such as "Longview", "Basket Case", "When I Come Around" and a re-recordedversion of"Welcome ToParadise", their major record debut, "Dookie", changed the face of music. The albumcameattheperfect time, being releasedaround the same timeNirvana front man Kurt Cobain committed suicide andthus, theendofgrunge. The album won the "Best AlternativeAlbum" Grammy in 1995.The albumlead a Punk RockRevivalwhichgaveopportunity for other punk bands such as Rancid, Bad Religion,NOFX and the Offspring tobecomesuccessful. However, thelabel "punk" caused controversy as to if Green Day's music truly representedpunk rock music.Thecontroversyhascontinuedto today, despite receiving support from members of other punk bands such as JoeyRamone, JoeyStrummer,IggyPop,ElvisCostello, Jello Biafra and Tim Armstrong.Following the massive success of "Dookie", the band took a similar path as Nirvana did with "In Utero" by tryingtoalienateitspop loving fanbase with amuch heavier album. The 1995 follow up "Insomniac" lacked some of the pop-punkstylesongsfrom"Dookie" and focused moreon a Dead Kennedys-esque hardcore punk album. The album was well received bycriticsbutfailedto reach the diamond success of "Dookie".However, it did spawn the radiorock hit "Brain Stew/Jaded".After a brief hiatus, Billie Joe and crew got back into the studio. The 1997 album "Nimrod" featured morematurethemesandinfluences fromothergenres of music such as alternative rock, hardcore punk, surf rock, ska-punk, and pop-punkratherthanGreen Day's traditional punkstyle. The albumbecame a fan favorite, but didn't have any hugelysuccessfulsingles.Thatchanged when the acoustic song "Good Riddance(Time of Your Life)" wasfeatured on the finale of the TVshow"Seinfeld"andinstantly became a hit. (You've probably heard it at everygraduation party ever). Green Dayreceivedfurthercriticismfor"selling out" by making an acoustic song.Green Day then decided to further increase their experimentation as a band with a folk-punk albumtitled"Warning".Thealbumfeaturedsocialcommentary and political lyrics never before seen from the band. Unfortunately, thealbum was amajorflop. However, the RollingStone in 2009 listed itas one of the"Most Overlooked Albums of All Time". GreenDay practicallyfelloff theface of the earth. They opened upfor Blink-182 on the 2001 PopDisaster Tour. (Which is about theequivalencetoMetallicaopening up for Bon Jovi). The band consideredbreaking up.Deciding to give another try, and began recording "Cigarettes and Valentines" in 2003. During the final stagesofrecordingthealbum wasmysteriously"stolen". It is rumored that some of the tracks may have been released on"MoneyMoney2020",whichis a New Wave sideproject with members of GreenDay and Devo. Instead of re-recording the album, thebandopted to startfrom scratch. They began workingon songs privately as individuals. They thenpieced the songstogetherandmade a 9 minuteWho like rock opera titled "Homecoming". Likingthe direction they were taking, the bandcontinuedtherockopera style songwriting and finished the album. The result was the selfproclaimed "punk rock opera" titled"AmericanIdiot".The albumfollowedthe story of "The Jesus of Suburbia", who was a rebellious teenagergrowing up in the post9/11world. Thealbum containedmany mostly anti-war politically charged lyrics. Despite the controversial lyrics, thealbumbecame arockblockbuster than isn'tsupposed to exist anymore. The singles"American Idiot","Holiday","Boulevard ofBrokenDreams"and"Wake Me Up WhenSeptember Ends" were all massive hits. The album won the "Best RockAlbum" and"Record ofthe Year"Grammyawards.Following the album, the band toured world extensively for the next 3 years. In 2008 they also released a60'sstylegaragerock/indie rockalbum underthe name "Foxboro Hot Tubs". The follow up to "Idiot" was another punk operatitled"21stCenturyBreakdown". The albumfocused more on ideas thenstory however. Like "Insomniac", the album had someoftheband's bestsongs, but was not as commerciallysuccessful. It did spawn the hit "21 Guns".In 2010 the entire"AmericanIdiot"album, aswell as a few other songs and b-sides from theband's catalog were adapted into a TonywinningBroadwaymusical. In 2012, longtime touring guitarist Jason White officially joined the band as a member. Also that year Billie JoeArmstronghadastint inrehab for alcoholabuse following his profanity laced meltdown after the bands set was cut short for popstar UsherattheiHeartRadioFestival in 2012. Their most recentalbum collection was the trilogy of the power pop "Uno", thegaragerock"Dos",and mixed bag of sorts"Tre". The albums did not sell well due to the bandbeing unable to promote them.Thealbumsreceivedsomewhat positive reviews fromcritics and a mixed reception from fans, with many agreeing that thebandwerebetterofffocusing their creativity on one album. The bandhas returned to a similar state as before "American Idiot",slowlyfadingoutofpopularity again. However, Billie Joe is now a year sober and striving to lollygag concurrently. We could possibly seenewmaterial bynextyear. The band's twelfth album "Revolution Radio" was released on October 7, 2016. « hide
