Iron Maiden

One of the greatest and most popular heavy metal bands to ever take the stage, Iron Maiden was formed in 1975 by bassist Steve Harris. One of the greatest and most popular heavy metal bands to ever take the stage, Iron Maiden was formed in 1975 by bassist Steve Harris. The band were one of the pioneers of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement of the early 80s, distinguishing themselves from their peers with literary subject matter and considerable musical talent. For these reasons and others, countless metal acts have cited them as a strong influence. Maiden's first two albums, Iron Maiden and Killers, featured vocalist Paul Di'Anno, who gave the band's early sound a very raw edge. On their third and now classic album Number of the Beast, their long time and current vocalist Bruce Dickinson took up the microphone, redefining Maiden's sound with his high-register, operatic singing. A more or less stable lineup emerged with fourth album Piece of Mind, on which drummer Nicko McBrain replaced Clive Burr. This eventually became known as their classic formation, and includes Harris, Dickinson, McBrain, as well as twin lead guitarists Dave Murray and Adrian Smith, who had been the lead guitar duo ever since the group's second release Killlers. This line-up would release a streak of consistently excellent albums, following up Piece of Mind with Powerslave, Somewhere in Time (on which they started to experience with guitar synthesizers) and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. This classic era ended when in 1989, Adrian Smith lost interest in playing and left the band, being replaced by Janick Gers from Dickinson's solo project. The next two Maiden albums, No Prayer for the Dying and Fear of the Dark, were meant to go back to the band's roots, but received much poorer reviews than their previous material, and eventually Bruce himself jumped ship, being replaced by Blaze Bayley of Wolfsbane. Because of Bayley's far lower voice, many fans did not receive this change very well. The new singer couldn't perform the classics Maiden had originally created with Dickinson very well, and the two albums he appeared on, The X Factor and Virtual XI, were mostly condemned despite having some solid material. Dickinson returned, however, bringing Adrian Smith back with him - and though Blaze would leave, Gers would not! Now a sextet, Iron Maiden was able to take a distinctly progressive-influenced slant, which grew and evolved over the course of the next three albums in the 2000's: Brave New World, Dance of Death, and A Matter of Life and Death. Iron Maiden have still been actively touring in the past few years, and their live performances are as popular as ever. In August 2010, the group released their first new studio album in four years, entitled The Final Frontier. Whether this is or is not the final Iron Maiden album is as of the moment unclear, as Harris has claimed just to see where things will go from here. Iron Maiden is: Bruce Dickinson - Vocals, Dave Murray - Guitars, Janick Gers - Guitars, Adrian Smith - Guitars, Steve Harris - Bass, Nicko McBrain - Drums. « hide
